So, Dry January’s going great…Your plodding along like a right trooper, enjoying not being hungover and feeling a little bit proud of yourself... then someone says,“C'mon! One won’t hurt,”Spoiler alert: It will!In this awkward (and surprisingly funny) episode, we explore why that one drink can derail your whole month and ruin your chance at a lovely, shiny sober life. So, today we are going backwards, for old times sake, This episode will help you rethink that question that is tapping at your soul about now - does it really matter if I have one? From dodging pub invites to surviving bottomless brunch culture, we’re diving headfirst into the bizarre social minefield of moderation. Because let’s face it — saying no is hard, but saying “maybe” is harder! Expect laughs, cringe-worthy moments, and a healthy dose of honesty as we ask: is moderation really the holy grail, or is just one the slippery slope?Warning: Side effects of this episode may include a smug sense of self-control and a weird craving for herbal tea. No Regrets! They don't work!Regret is a feeling of sadness about something sad or wrong or about a mistake that you have made, and a wish that it could have been different and better: Some sober people might say that this is how they feel about their drinking career. They might look back at it as a mistake, a time where they were not living life to the fullest or wish it could have been better, less messy and more fulfilling. But how does feeling regret effect sobriety? Does if push us forward or hold us back?Today Vic and Hamish will go over some of their big regrets, they'll go deeper than the sloppy shags and pissed up injuries and dig into some of the more long term remorse that has resulted from years of heavy boozing. Can they both turn their regret into a super power and move on from it? Find out in this very silly episode in which Vic refers to her vagina as the Blackwell Tunnel. On the surface of it, Paul Sculfor was living the dream. He fell into modelling (his Mum signed him up to a competition without him knowing) and soon became Britain’s first supermodel when he was still in his early 20s. He travelled the world, earnt a huge income and was seemingly ‘living the dream’. But underneath it all, Paul’s partying was covering up some deep rooted trauma. As you will hear, Paul’s childhood was far from straightforward. Although he only discovered drinks and drugs relatively late, they would immediately fill the gaps in his personality that he felt he was lacking.Paul didn’t know he had a problem - until it was almost too late. After another drugs and booze fuelled night out, Paul had a panic attack whilst driving and would soon end up in rehab.Although it wasn’t a straightforward path from there - he has now been sober for over 20 years and has used his experience to try and help others. His wonderful Stride Foundation has been helped people get the professional help they need for a decade.Today, he splits his time working with the Foundation, modelling, podcasting, acting and TV presenting - not to mention being a husband and father of two.We cannot thank Paul enough for his honesty and wisdom during this conversation.Show NotesPaul's Website: http://www.paulsculfor.com/Stride Foundation Website: https://stridefoundation.com/Paul's Instagram: @paulsculfor'This is Powerful with Paul Scolfor' Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/4nLXwFf6c2D2iRExDigfmj?si=31c9ec427c1c4244Vic's book is out! This was the day that Hamish took Vic to the Cricket. Vic doesn't like cricket - as you can tell, but she went along with Hamish and followed through with all the ridiculous traditions - which (unfortunately for her) included dressing up as a frog. But, these two rebellious little green amphibians did break one major cricketing tradition that day - They did not drink. Not a Pimms and Lemonade in sight! Did the world stop and point accusatory fingers? No - in fact it was very liberating! So, is it ok to break traditions? Even if it offends your host? And, are some of the drinking traditions just peer pressure from dead people? Is it possible that we just go along with them because we always have?Yes, you've guessed it. Today is all about custom. Vic and Hamish take a look into some drinking traditions all over the world and some that happen on their doorstep. Everything from kidnapping brides in Germany to rugby games in Australia and St Patricks day in Ireland. How have these events become so synonymous with drinking and why do we feel the need to partake in the celebrations? When something is a tradition it seems so much harder for a sober person to say no - so today's episode is here to set you up and make you feel strong when faced with a long ingrained drinking custom. It's time to change the course of traditions and stop them in their rather wobbly tracks!Ribbit!#alcoholfree #sober #soberlife #sobercurious #sobriety #soberliving #cricket #recovery #sobermovement #alcoholfreelife #soberlifestyle #recoveryispossible #soberawkward #nonalcoholic #hangoverfree #addiction #sobrietyrocks #sobercommunity #wedorecover #addictionrecovery #sobermom #boozefree #mentalhealth #dryjanuary #onedayatatime #soberwomen #alcoholicsanonymous #noalcohol #cleanandsober #alcoholShow NotesVic's book is out! Like many people around the world we were hugely shocked and saddened by the recent news of the 6 tourists who lost their lives to suspected methanol poisoning in Laos. As sensitive and raw as this seems, we felt compelled to use our platform to try and educate and warn others about the risks of methanol and how best to avoid it. This episode is a tribute to all of the friends and family who are grieving at the moment. We sincerely hope that their lives were not given in vain and that they become the catalyst for change so that nobody else needs to lose their life in this way again. We are sorry we even had to record this episode, but we hope you agree that its as important as any we have ever had to record.Show NotesVic's book is out! With schoolies fast approaching, you might be thinking about what you should say to your teenager about alcohol. NOBODY in Australia is more experienced on this topic than Paul Dillon. For the last three decades he has travelled around Australia (and the world!) visiting schools to teach them about the dangers of alcohol and drugs. Many of us dread this conversation...for years...particularly if we were heavy drinkers ourselves. But Paul's approach is similar to ours on the podcast. He is not trying to tell kids to not drink or do drugs. He is instead equipping them to do so as safely as possible. How should they act in an emergency?Does eating bread or pulling a sickie sober you up?And should you ever put a mate to sleep if they are hammered? These are just some of the questions that Paul will answer over the course of our chat. The truth is - he is a fountain of wisdom on the exact topic Vic and Hame know the least about and we are hugely grateful he sat down with us to help you all too!NotesDrug and Alcohol Research and Training (DARTA) website: https://darta.net.au/Paul's Instagram: @dillonpauldartaYou can contact Shaun by emailing him at: spalmer@revivesobrietycoaching.comVic's book is out! In Australia, over 100,000 FIFO (Fly In, Fly Out) workers deal with the pressures of extended time away from home and countless others, partners, friends and kids also have to deal with the fallout that runs alongside someone they love being away for long periods of time. So, does working away from home Increase your own or your partners drinking? The stats seem to suggest that people who work away tend to over drink more than most and party harder on their days off.It could be caused by the sense of freedom people feel when working away or it could be loneliness, boredom or missing loved ones. Then, when they get home from a work trip... the party starts. Time to kick back and enjoy a well-earned break and have a few drinks to pass the time. A toxic cycle of drinking that can leak from a workplace culture into the home.'But Hame and Vic - What do you know?! You don't even have real jobs! we hear you cry!Well...you're right...and that's why we have welcomed onto the podcast the wonderful Shaun Palmer who openly shares his story of domestic abuse, grief, work as a FIFO, over drinking and eventual journey to sobriety. Shaun has overcome more hurdles than most of us will in a lifetime and he now spends his time trying to help others who are struggling too.It was an absolute pleasure to have him on the podcast and we hope his story inspires you as much as it did us!Enjoy!NotesShaun's Revive Sobriety website: https://www.revivesobrietycoaching.com/You can contact Shaun by emailing him at: spalmer@revivesobrietycoaching.comVic's book is out! Sausage Warning - In today's episode there are far too much pork talk - May be disturbing to some listeners. It's an email that Vic and Hamish receive all the time - Is it a lapse or a relapse when you drink after a period of abstinence? and do you have to re-set your sober days counter if you have one day of drinking? If you just completed Sober October...well done! Didn't those sober days tick over nicely? - It would be shame to go back to day one. But, what happens if the need comes creeping back and if you have a bevvie (which we hope you won't) does it need to be dramatic? Do you have to reset your app? or can it just be a glitch that strengthens your sobriety in the long run?Today Vic and Hame are going to unravel the difference between these two words 'Lapse' and 'Relapse' to try and understand if they are as heavy as they sound. Does it depend where you sit on the vast spectrum of alcohol use disorder? or is it just a matter of personal choice? For Vic, a relapse would symbolise a serious mental health breakdown, but for Hame it might be as simple as shrugging it off.The process of drinking again after time off is different for everyone. So, if you have has a lapse or relapse, Sober Awkward is here to put the imaginary pig back in the pen, get you back on the sober horse and get the wheels of the sober wagon rolling (too many farm related puns? ) They will unravel the shame over a slip up, give you some tips, uncover why choosing to take responsibility for your drinking habit will help it last longer and lastly, understand why Vic has a very close relationship with the toilet right now.Enjoy!Show NotesVic's book is worldwide on Audio and Ebook - Just search for 'A Thousand Wasted Sundays'https://www.booktopia.com.au/a-thousand-wasted-sundays-victoria-vanstone/book/9780645757941.htmland please give a review at www.goodreads.comJOIN PATREON! and buy us a Cuppa so we can keep being awkward!https://www.patreon.com/user?u=81897291www.cuppa.community – The Free Social Network for the Sober and Sober Curious - Sober Events – Therapy – Sobriety Courses – Sober Groups and loads more.@soberawkward @drunkmummysobermummy@cuppa.community @hamishadamscairns @patreon @spotifyIf you are struggling with your relationship with alcohol please reach out to your local doctor, a therapist, AA Group or just chat to a close friend. Whether you are newly sober or 10 years in, chances are you have had a drinking dream. For Vic and Hame these usually involve a highlight reel of being off their faces in a nightclub or at a music festival. These can be both troubling and an incredible relief. For some, the dream of being drunk can act as a trigger to wanting to experience that again. Whereas for others, just waking up and realising that you do not have a hangover or come down can further strengthen their sobriety. Is there anything you can do to avoid these types of dreams? How can you train yourself to react in a positive way every time? Why does Hame’s wife struggle to accept that dinosaurs existed? We will answer the BIG questions in this week’s episode.Enjoy!Show NotesVic's book is out! Last week Vic and Hame found out about those weird and strange people that don't get hangovers and this week they dig into how you can subtly help that person and nudge them towards an alcohol free life. How do you tell someone that loves drinking that you're worried about them? It's a question that Vic and Hame get all the time! And it's the hardest one to answer. When you are still in love with booze, have no repercussions from it and feel like its your best friend, someone trying to sit you down and have a meaningful chat about it will be enough to have the big drinkers reaching for that bottle of voddie, so how on earth can you get someone to slow down without making them feel defensive?Today is all about those calm, shoulder to shoulder conversations, why leading by example is so powerful and reframing the hangover.Oh and Vic reads a terrible review of her book.Enjoy!Show NotesVic's book is out! There are some weird people in this world that don't get hangovers. They drink a case full of beers and wake up the next day feeling fine and dandy. So, why would someone like this ever quit alcohol and how can you help someone that is still in the honeymoon period of boozing?Well, today Vic and Hamish try to find out. In the first episode of this two part extravaganza, they discover why some people don't suffer dusty comedowns the next day, how genetics play a role and why which booze you choose makes hangovers more severe. They will also take a look at the reality of the hangover - is it just 24 hours of feeling like shit or is there more long term damage that people ignore just to keep the party going? So, because they waffled on for far too long about this it's been split into two episodes - next week we go from the 'no hangover unicorns' to about chatting to someone you love that is still........ totally in love with booze.Show NotesVic's book is out! No-one really talks about death or prepares for it. Is this why booze is so prevalent at wakes and funerals? The way us humans deal with death doesn't seem to evolve. You put on a black outfit, grab a sarnie and a tissue, then, generally, everyone gets totally shitfaced. Then you accidentally offend the grieving widow, fall down some stairs, get thrown out of a pub and stumble home singing 'Oh Danny Boy.' Then, after the wake you have to deal with a hangover on top of all those difficult feelings. It's an emotional mess.Booze doesn't help. It prolongs the mourning period and makes recovery from the death of a loved one a lot more painful. So, why do we do it?Unfortunately death is something all us sober folks will face at some stage. Death is part of life, we will lose people. So, how do you handle it as a sober person? Should you even go and risk your sobriety or are there other ways that you can remember someone without getting three sheets to the wind - blotto. On Sober Awkward we like to talk about the hard stuff, (not whiskey!) plan for unexpected situations and confront emotions (and talk a little bit too much about Hamish's sheep fetish - say no more.) but we hope by digging deep into the more difficult aspects of life, we can help you feel stronger in your sobriety and help you approach the death of a loved-one without the risk of relapse So why are funerals and wake so boozy? Is it ok not to go? and how would the person that dies feel if you said 'No' to raising a glass at their send off?Find out in this slightly more serious episode of Sober Awkward.Show NotesVic's book is out! It's time to take a trip down memory lane and think about the first drags on mates soggy cigarette, reminisce about couging up your guts on the school bus and recollect you first ever spliff build! Why did we do it? Why did we think it was cool to smoke, was it simply to look cool in front of our peers or because a bottle of 'White Lightening cider' tends to flush smart decision making down the lavatory?Today Vic and Hame are going to find out why people that drink are more likely to smoke and why combining the two is so bad for you. They'll reveal their own smoking histories, discover if the damage done is repairable and determine if we drank to smoke and smoked to drink? They also talk about porn mags and an obsession with Zippo lighters! It's the usual mix of drivel and science.Enjoy!Show Notes...Vic's book is out! Nobody has moulded the UK magazine culture quite as much as James Brown. His CV makes for some impressive reading - at 22 he was the Features Editor of the NME, he founded the iconic Loaded Magazine at just 27 and would go onto work at GQ where he started their now infamous 'Man of the Year Awards' and gave an unknown chef by the name of Jamie Oliver his first food column.More impressively, he negotiated all of this whilst dealing with the unthinkable trauma of the suicide of his mother and an addiction to drugs and alcohol. His book Animal House reads like the British version of Wolf of Wall Street. Give enough free drugs and booze to an excitable group of succesful 20 somethings in London in the 90s and just see what happens! In amongst the wild stories is a inspiring story about overcoming both trauma and addiction. The James that Hamish got to meet was retrospective, wise, kind and a formidable storyteller. Like us, he is not here to tell anyone how to live their lives. His life story is one to be shared. What you choose to do with the lessons that he has learnt is totally up to you!Sit back and enjoy the wonderful James Brown!NotesJames Brown's Book: https://www.amazon.com.au/Animal-House-James-Brown/dp/1787477908James' Instagram: @jamesjamesbrownJOIN PATREON! and buy us a Cuppa so we can keep being awkward!https://www.patreon.com/user?u=81897291www.cuppa.community – The Free Social Network for the Sober and Sober Curious - Sober Events – Therapy – Sobriety Courses – Sober Groups and loads more.@soberawkward @drunkmummysobermummy@cuppa.community @hamishadamscairns @patreon @spotifyIf you are struggling with your relationship with alcohol please reach out to your local doctor, a therapist, AA Group or just chat to a close friend. Following on from last week's extended episode about therapy... here is Part Two!Today Vic and Hamish want to focus on reaching out for help. They’ll share what happens in a therapy session and why it can help you move on from bad habits. Now, this isn’t going to be easy because of course all practitioners do things differently but what they will try to do, in their very own awkward way, is to uncover why finding the right person could be the key to a long sober life, how having patience is a must and find out why men in particular find it hard to reach out. They hope by the end of this episode you'll decide to reach out and find someone to chat to. Sober Awkward wants to give you the confidence to pick up the phone, or fill in that online form and stop putting it off. Todays the day that you decide to stop failing to solve all your problems by yourself..... and start accepting some support because not only will you feel better – everyone around you will benefit too. They also have a chat about relationships, wearing bonnets and sticking fruit and vegetables up bottoms. Foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) What are FASD's?Is it safe to have any level of alcohol when pregnant? How does it affect the unborn baby? How and when is it diagnosed? These are questions Vic and Hamish should have probably found the answers to a long time ago, but like many people, they both chose to ignore the facts about FASD and live in hope that it wouldn't happen to them. Silly really.FASD a condition, or range of conditions, that we've all heard of, but for some reason don't take too seriously. We presume we shouldn't drink when trying for a baby but make excuses....'Surly, one won't hurt?' So, today is about facts, finding out what it is and how alcohol consumption can have impact on a baby during the first trimester. As you may have guessed... neither of these two buffoons know much about anything, so, they have invited on an incredible guest, Sophie. Sophie has lived lived experience of FASD after exposing her unborn child to alcohol in early gestation and today discusses her own experience of living with the guilt and shame that comes alongside this diagnosis. She also chats about how it affects her sons daily life, the challenges, the wins and how gaining more knowledge about FASD has made their relationship closer. This episode is for anyone that has ever wondered about this condition or is essential listening if you are trying for a baby.Noteshttps://www.nofasd.org.auNOFASD Australia works to support families living with FASD and prevent harms caused by alcohol.
