The start of the Clinton era was the greatest time ever for girls in rock, but can Nina Gordon hope to be as cool as Kim Deal? Argue over your favorite alternachick anthem as "Cannonball" by The Breeders fights the "Seether" by Veruca Salt!
A main pop girl showdown for the ages!! Around the turn of the 2010s, the charts were ruled by two up-and-coming pop divas, but now only one can stand! Which of the two high points of their careers is the one which must reign supreme, Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" or Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream"?
Put on your comfortable sweaters because we will be listening to two absolute lesbian icons! But which coming-out anthem is the mom-folk song of a generation, Melissa Etheridge's "Come to My Window" or the Indigo Girls' "Closer to Fine"?
Find out what your loyal Song vs. Song co-hosts thought about a Grammys that has been plagued by controversy and delays, but which a lot of people thought was pretty good!
Do you know where you are?! You're off to never never land! We've got some real thundering monsters of rock in the building tonight! It's the battle of two of the biggest, most ass-kicking hard rock songs of all time, but only one can come out the victor, so what is the greatest, Guns n' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" or Metallica's "Enter Sandman"??
In the early-mid-'90s, two women captured the hearts of every weird art girl alive. But only one can come up triumphant, so let us now debate which tribute to strangeness is the greatest, Tori Amos's "Cornflake Girl" or Bjork's "Human Behaviour"!
Time for some sad soft indie-boy music! We have one guitar and a lot of complaining but which song will change our lives, "New Slang" by The Shins or "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie?
The Hot Topic girls are coming in 2007 to steal your boyfriend! But who gets him first? Will Avril Lavigne becomes his new "Girlfriend" or will Paramore will be open for "Misery Business?
It is finally time to do some nu-metal, and if you don't like that, you can stick it up your (yeah!)! Korn and Limp Bizkit were the kings of late '90s rock, but only one can come out victorious here, so which angry white boy anthem reigns supreme, "Freak on a Leash" or "Nookie"?
It's the last episode of 2020 so we here at Song vs. Song wanted to put out the year with one of its biggest songs! But wait... wasn't there a rap song named "Rockstar" just a couple years ago? It's DaBaby's "Rockstar" vs. Post Malone's "Rockstar," which rapper will capture rock stardom?
It's Christmas time and that means it's the time of the year we give back, so we are doing the big star-studded charity singles of the '80s? But can Band Aid's holiday perennial "Do They Know It's Christmas" compete with the overwhelming American star power of USA for Africa's "We Are the World"?
We may all be trapped in our houses but that doesn't mean we can't party like we're at the lamest wedding reception of all time! Let us get on the floor and decide which lightly-funky early '80s party jam is superior, Kool & the Gang's "Celebration" or Lionel Richie's "All Night Long (All Night)"!
Song vs. Song goes hipster! We welcome back Billboard editor Andrew Unterberger to discuss two of the late '90s giants of indie rock! Which mopey acoustic love song shall reign supreme, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel or "The Book of Love" by The Magnetic Fields?
It's Halloween and that means it's time for every appropriately-distanced Halloween gathering to play "Ghostbusters"! But: Is it superior to the other ridiculous just-the-plot-of-the-movie action comedy theme song, Will Smith's "Men in Black"? Who ya gonna call? Woo, ha ha!
Todd and Dany welcome country music expert Grady Smith to discuss the whipping boy genre of the 2010s, bro-country! Is there anything redeemable about this controversial genre, and which of its towering, game-changing early '10s smashes is the defining song of its moment, Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" or Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise"?
A Song vs. Song for the ages! A rap battle etched into history! Though 2Pac and Biggie were taken from us too early, we can now settle the beef by deciding which of their signature tunes was the greatest, "California Love" or "Mo Money Mo Problems"!
It wouldn't be the '90s without some gently earnest female pop-rock! Whose wistful breakup ballad ruled the decade, Lisa Loeb's "Stay (I Missed You)" or Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn"?
The quarantine has finally given the MTV Video Music Awards a reason to exist as we desperately rely on our televisions for entertainment! Gaga, BTS and Ariana all showed up, but was the show any good?
It's an episode of ass-kicking rock and roll! Which is the greatest metal song of 1980, Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" or AC/DC's "Back in Black"? (Also, is Todd wrong about calling AC/DC "metal"? All this and more on the podcast!)
It's two of the biggest love songs of the '60s from two of the decade's biggest groups of fake hippies! Will the Monkees' fairy tale ending beat Sonny and Cher's real-life love anthem? Also: Shrek vs. Beavis and Butthead?

as a 14 yr old girl I did indeed own both these albums ( tho I never actually watched Reality Bites I totally owned the soundtrack for this song only). I remember having Chick Angst mix cds with both on them. Have to say I remembered the video for Stay better. My only memory of the video for Torn was the one part where her face fills the whole frame and my brain kinda thought the whole video must have been that since I remembered it so well. As it turns out, nope. That was like five seconds of it.

hah - listening in December 2020; this episode DID kinda act as a harbinger of the end times. Or at least the year 2020.

no debate for me: 1. it's modest mouse 2. it's a come back/mainstream breakthrough song 3. it makes you not kill yourself
