Description

Welcome to the Sound Mind podcast where I invite interesting guests from the music field and discuss with them topics: musical and personal growth, pursuing excellence and self talk, body and mind maintenance, practice and work routines, the music business and more.
The name 'Sound mind' stands for a well-balanced and grounded mind. It represents a mind capable of making wise decisions. It goes hand in hand with good habits since good habits lead to sound mind and sound mind leads to good habits.
Sound mind is not easy to maintain but it serves as the best connection to yourself and others.

About me:
My name is Mihael Hrustelj, I was born in 1991 in Slovenia, and I'm a guitarist, composer, arranger, and poet. While I currently call the Netherlands my second home, my musical journey began when I was 13 years old, like many young boys, hoping to impress girls with my guitar skills. Little did I know that music would take me on a profound journey of self-exploration, helping me discover both the good and the bad within myself.

As I reflect on my life as a musician, I can't help but think that it allows me to lead a lifestyle akin to that of a millionaire, with all the richness that life can offer in its purest form. My philosophy revolves around a holistic lifestyle that combines the body and mind, drawing inspiration from Buddhist and Stoic approaches. I also place a strong emphasis on workout, connecting with nature, enjoying the simple pleasure of barefoot walking, and even subjecting myself to the invigorating challenge of cold exposure.

Through my music and my advocacy, I strive to promote good values and intertwine being a good musician with being a great person. My ultimate goal is to share my sounds, connect with others through music, and empower people through my concerts and collaborations. Music is not just a passion for me; it's a means to make the world a better place, one note at a time.

On this episode, my guest is Jure Pukl, a world-class saxophone player, improviser, and a truly brilliant musician. I am really fond of him and I really enjoy his sense of humour. We also share a couple of similarities: we both come from our hometown, Velenje, and we both moved back to Slovenia after years of living abroad. This episode is about jazz, improvisation, and he will share his hilarious story about his musical upbringing; you have to hear it to believe it. All the way to enjoying life as it is and embracing what it gives you.He also used an NFT as artwork on one of his recent albums called Melt.We will also discuss the experience and the importance when people/teachers doubt in you. It is not nice, of course, BUT! I realised I would not change a ‘not nice experience’ for anything, because it gave me a chance to grow stronger from it, and to realise what I really want and make that even more meaningful.I think one of the problems today is that society is trying to protect and prevent people from ‘not nice’ experiences (parents trying to remove everything unpleasant in their life, or society with its close to paranoid political correctness). I believe we have to be challenged in order to train our mental resilience. I see it like training a sport, body, or craft as artists for that matter. (Of course, as long as it is not life-threatening.) How can we ever get stronger or wiser if not through a set of challenges in life? Jure is also a teacher at the Academy of Music in the Jazz department, which opened last year in Ljubljana for the first time in Slovenia!Don’t miss it! He will share his way of scheduling, which is interesting since it involves scheduling your free time first. We will discuss setting your priorities and time prediction. On this episode, my guest is Johannes Fend, a bass player, composer, and a little bit of an innovator, as well as a really good friend of mine.I find him to be a huge inspiration when it comes to listening, problem-solving, and routine. It has happened on several occasions that we started a specific routine together, checked on each other, and reported about it, which made it easier to stick with it.During our conversation, we will discuss the importance of rest, a stoic mindset, the benefits of cold exposure, 3D printing, and he will also share interesting findings from a book he recently read called ‘The War of Art’. As a cherry on top, we will also share our short but funny project that we did during the COVID lock-down, which is called cricket farming.Useful links: https://www.johannesfend.com/https://www.instagram.com/johannes.bass/https://www.facebook.com/JohannesFend.Basshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzwwi90EGgEWZuTxYy83W-g?view_as=subscriberhttps://johannesfend.bandcamp.com/album/journey The Sound Mind Podcast is from now on available not only on YouTube in the form of video but also as audio on all streaming platforms (Apple podcast, Spotify). On this episode, my guest is Josep Garcés, a person who connects with music in a very peculiar way. He didn’t start off as a musician, but rather as an engineer, who later left his job where he worked for huge companies in the Netherlands to pursue his dream which was playing music. This journey also led him to create his own software called Live Loop, and recently he has been developing another project called Music Moon, which is linked to the crypto world and involves creating NFT’s through music production.During our conversation, we will explore various interesting topics, including healing frequencies, fasting, and the controversial practice of urine therapy and its benefits.Don’t miss it! On this episode, my guest is Miroslav Tadić, a Serbian guitarist, composer and a professor at CalArts university in Los Angeles. He has been named by the editors of Guitar Player Magazine as one of the 30 most radical and individual guitarists in the world. He is for me a huge inspiration when it comes to guitar playing, guitar sound, incorporating tradition into your pieces and flow of energy during a performance. I discovered his music many years ago by listening to a famous guitar duo which he had with Vlatko Stefanovski. Having the possibility to talk to Miroslav and ask him all these questions was a huge privilege and it felt like I can finally ask him all these questions that piled up through the years of listening to his music. Alongside his guitar playing insights, pre-concert and warm-up routines he will also share his journey of being a luthier, how his musical journey started and some valuable comments on perfectionism, happiness and enjoying the moment regardless of how it feels like. On this episode, my guest is Andrej Ofak, a Slovenian guitarist, guitar teacher, and a very good friend of mine. He is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to guitar sound, nutrition, taking care of the soil, and growing your own plants, especially trees. He has been busy for the last two years with growing his own tree garden, which will be counting up to one hundred and twenty newly planted trees this year!
He is to me a huge help and inspiration for my own guitar sound and that I sound the way I sound on the stage. He will share his story of how a fruitarian diet saved his life, along with insights on how music and spirituality go hand in hand, his take on teaching, and hacks and tips to improve your micronutrient levels ranging from the use of UVB lights, growing your own micro-greens, and which seeds have the highest levels of Omega-3. As per usual, there will be, as always, a good portion of personal insights and interesting stories. Don’t miss it! On this episode, my guest is Samo Šalamon. A Slovenian guitarist and composer, playing with musicians from all around the world. I see him as an embodiment of ‘just do it’ mentality. Every time I talk to him, he gives me so much inspiration to do the things that I love. What I admire the most at him is his ability to focus on things that are important and to continuously produce great content that he stands behind. He recorded around forty (40) music albums and his podcast called ‘dr. Jazz Talks’ is now counting already 403 episodes! Plus, he is a full time dad and runs his own music school and has a PhD in Translation and American Literature.

We have talked about scheduling, composing, podcasting the ‘just do it’ mentality, following your vision and he also shared an incredible story which I call ‘The John Scofield Story’. As per usual there will be as well a good portion of personal insights and interesting stories. Don’t miss it!

On this episode, my guest is Panagiotis Andreou. A wonderful New York based musician and bass player, touring all over the globe as a member of different projects. I recognize him not only as a monster bass player, but also as a very supportive and understanding human being. I first found out about him 12 years ago through series of YouTube videos that he made together with his band New York Gypsy All Stars. This band was definitely one of my main influences in regard to Balkan fusion music. This podcast is a heartfelt conversation where we have discussed topics ranging from life of a touring musician, leaving the country and studying abroad in pre internet era, musicians life in New York, Mediterranean vs. the rest of the world to sharing some personal insights and opening up on the topic of taking therapy. As a cherry on top we will even briefly discuss the life of monkeys.Useful links: https://www.instagram.com/panagiotisandreou/ https://www.facebook.com/panabass/ https://www.nygypsyallstars.com/ https://youtu.be/XwWuPlYQyyQThank you for your interest in this podcast.Stay tuned for my future guests. In this episode my guest is Shai Maestro, one of the greatest piano masters of his generation. I’ve had the deepest experience during one of his concert when I went to see him for the first time. His ability to connect with the audience and with his band mates only by using music is out of this world and something what I got inspired by him to do as well. Alongside being a great musician and composer he is also a very wise and inspiring soul. We have discussed topics such as meditation, musicianship, composing and an important concept to understand which is ‘creative pregnancy’ from which every creative soul will benefit from it.
