Sounds of Globalism-Europe

This video features a performance by the Selkie Celtic Band with an opening performance by Erika Littman and Andrew Magill and a discussion with Ioana Sherman. Selkie Celtic Band is an ensemble of musicians from the Greenville, South Carolina area who specialize in the traditional music of the British Isles and Europe. They perform several original songs and also arrange Celtic folk songs and dance tunes. Their instrumentation includes the hammered dulcimer, the Celtic folk harp, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, Irish tin whistle, bodhran (frame drum) and other percussion and vocals. Andrew Magill is a four-time gold medalist at the New York Fleadh Cheoil, and two-time competitor at the All-Ireland Championships. Erika Littman ’09, a senior vocal performance major at UNC at the time of this recording, learned about sean-nós singing during a six-month stint in Ireland and was struck by its similarity to ballad singing. She spent several weeks learning Irish in Donegal and began learning sean-nós songs from recordings of Joe Heaney upon her return to the States. Ioana Sherman is a member of the American Musical Instrument Society, Music Teachers National Association, North Carolina Music Teachers Association, and the Chapel Hill Music Teachers Association, where she serves as secretary. She received her bachelor of arts in music education and master of arts in musicology from the University of California at Riverside.
