This video features a performance by Pura Fe with an opening performance by Brevard’s The Mason Jar Drinkers and a discussion with Glenn Hinson. Pura Fe is the founding member of the internationally renowned native woman’s a capella trio, ‘Ulali,’ and is recognized for creating a new genre, bringing Native contemporary music to the forefront of the “mainstream” music industry. The Mason Jar Drinkers is an old time string band composed of Hunter Holmes on the guitar, Josh Carter on the mandolin, Steven Acker on the bass, and Michael Eleazer on the fiddle. The band members are all students at Brevard College in Brevard, N.C. Formed in October of 2007, the music of The Mason Jar Drinkers encompasses a large range of American vernacular music styles from the 1920’s and 1930’s, including old time, string band, jug band, blues and early jazz. The discussion was led by Glenn Hinson, professor in the Department of American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focus has long been African American expressive culture, with focused investigation of musical, poetic and belief systems in African American communities.
