Welcome, Chris Duval, the owner and founder of Circa Vintage Wear. This vintage clothing store is a South Coast institution. It was opened in 1986 specializing in men's and women’s vintage clothing and accessories. Circa Vintage Wear mainly emphasizes the fashion and designs of the 20s-60s. Chris Duval's inspiration was mainly the fashion, and the reuse, recycling and reinterpretation of clothing while making it current.  Circa Vintage Wear wide selection encourages self expression. As Chris recounts, "So much amazing clothing was ending up in landfills and I wanted to create a space where people would be inspired to make vintage a viable commodity." Circa has grown over the past 38 years and evolved. But, it has maintained it’s passion driven integrity. Chris spoke with The Artists Index co-founder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier. They discussed both his journey in vinatage wear, Circa's establishment as the vinatage wear source in the South Coast and how Hollywood has come calling and shopping. Welcome to Scott Bishop's Fairhaven Podcast Series. This Farihaven Performing Artists (number six) features Eddie Dillon. This is a two-part podcast. Watch for part two to follow shortly. Eddie is a singer/songwriter and musician with over 500 songs in his catalog. His music has been recorded and released by Aoife Clancy, Barleycorn, Seamus Kennedy, Shananagans, and The Jammin’ Divas. Eddie Dillon's two original CDs, The Barber’s Lament and Things You Wished You Said, are available online, and a new CD, All For a Song, was released this year. Active in the Irish music world, he is the only American to tour with the Clancy Brothers, he appeared with them on television and in concert in Ireland and the States. Dillon was a founding member of the Shananagans,, in Massachusetts, and still performs with the band on occasion. He was also a member of the Celtic rock band The Aliens. He toured throughout the Northeast with both Aoife and Finbarr Clancy and has played with many other bands as well as solo in venues across New England and New York. Welcome to Scott Bishop's new series, Brought to the Light. Scott's guest on this first of ten podcasts is Lee Blake. She has over 30 years of experience as a teacher and administrator in urban education and historic preservation. Lee has taught African American and Women’s Studies at the high school and university level in New Bedford and in New York City. She served as the director of Education for the City of New York for 8 years. Lee Blake has been awarded five National Endowment for the Humanities awards to provide professional development to teachers across the country on African American history. Her program, Sailing to Freedom: New Bedford and the Underground Railroad, is breaking new ground as it highlights the sea and whaling as an escape route for African American freedom seekers. Currently, Lee serves as president and chief development officer for the New Bedford Historical Society. During her 15 years as a volunteer at the Society, Lee has successfully raised funds for after-school programming, building preservation and restoration projects, as well as funds for art Although Lee Blake says, "I am not an artist, but I work with artists to fund public art pieces and spaces that have changed the narrative of the City of New Bedford." New Bedford Historical Society has been responsible for the vast majority of public art in New Bedford that focuses on Black history and the Black experience. "The Society has been responsible for illustrating the history of our people through several projects: Lewis Temple Monument, Abolition Row Park, the Frederick Douglass statue, 54th Massachusetts Mural and 54th Massachusetts Regiment Park, the Jazz Mural, and other projects. Welcome, Toni Delgado-Green, the Arts & Culture Editor for The New Bedford Light, one of our community partners. Toni has loved to sketch since a very young age.  She especially liked pencils or charcoal. As she says, "Whether through visual art, music, writing, spoken word, or modeling, creative expression is my thing." Toni Delgado-Green started as an art student. Writing, however, eventually felt like the more practical path for her. She says she's been lucky to channel that passion as the Arts & Culture Editor for The New Bedford Light since its inception. Toni is proud of the work The Light does and the way it connects with the South Coast community. She has a soft spot for surrealism and impressionism, and believes music is as essential as food and water. Local culture and history are part of that nourishment. Toni Delgado-Green dabbled in the modeling world as a young teacher, but says she lacked the confidence needed to succeed. Now, she's approached this new venture with a new mindset and hopes to inspire others by her example. Toni spoke with The Artists Index co-founder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier. Welcome, Manuela Laurenco Da Costa! Manuela DaCosta is a fiction writer and the author of the Hawk Island series. Acores is the Portuguese word for hawk. It is spelled Azores in English. The series, according to Google Books, "...stands in the middle of the Atlantic, small and defiant, like its people. Two Brooks is the most isolated village in Hawk Island, surrounded by high cliffs and flanked at each end by a brook. It is a village of tenacious people, hardened by isolation and punished by nature with crude winters and burning droughts. It is also a place forsaken by God and men that boasts a long history of civil disobedience and defiance of social norms." Born in Terceira, Acores, she immigrated to the United States as a young adult just before the Carnation Revolution of 1974. Manuela graduated from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth). She lives in New Bedford with her husband and cat. In addition to writing the Hawk Island series, Manuela published her first book, Os Sonhos de Dona Dores, in the 90s. Written in Portuguese prose, it illustrates the conflicts between a young girl and her parents as immigrants in a new country. Hawk Island offers a different approach with intense character building and deeply descriptive landscapes. It tells the story of the dynamic between islanders and strangers on this remote island. Manuela spoke with The Artists Index co-founder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier. Welcome, Adrian R. Tió, a former Professor of Fine Arts in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He was also a former dean at the College. Tió received his fine arts training from Temple University (BA ‘74), the University of Cincinnati (MFA ‘79), and his post-baccalaureate study at the Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy (‘75-76). He resides in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. Adrian Tió has exhibited nationally and regionally, in drawing, painting, and printmaking for over 40 years. Tió maintains the Hare of the Dog Press & Studio in New Bedford, Massachusetts, at the north end Hatch Street Studios. Welcome, Zarla Ludin, a design strategist, product enthusiast, and sometime artist. Her career has focused on helping businesses—such as Sonos, Amazon, and iRobot—connect their creative teams with clear narratives and organizational goals. Zarla has also partnered with municipalities, including the City of Boston, to shape service innovations and reflect on design practice. She is now channeling her love for storytelling and product development into her artistic side. After she began prioritizing her art practice, she was surprised by how few art supply stores exist in Massachusetts—outside of big-box chains, options are scarce. Zarla Ludin launched The Spare Studio in 2024 to address this gap with a second-hand art supply store that extends the life of creative materials and invites the creative community and community-at-large to "reimagine what’s possible with what we already have." In Episode Seven, Jazz Podcast Host, Dave Reis speaks with drummer Chris Poudrier, Sr., about his talent, passion, and dedication. Chris's career has not been limited to a specific genre. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, Cum Laude. He is a drum set professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he is the musical director for the UMASS Dartmouth Latin-Jazz “ Vision” Ensemble. Chris has also been on the guest faculty for The Berklee College of Music’s Annual Percussion Festival. His work has been documented on many recordings.  He performs with The Jim Robitaille Group. Chris Poudrier, Sr., is also a composer, an Irish Bodhran player, and an Irish Uilleann piper. The Artist Index's jazz documentarian and Jazz Podcast Series host, Dave Reis, spent nearly 26 years as a Jazz radio show host, among his many other accomplishments. He was one of the original longtime DJs who worked at the former WUSM, which became radio station WUMD, 89.3 FM, on the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. Welcome, Lara Lourenco Harrington, AKA Lara Harrington, a re-emerging artist and supporter of the arts in the South Coast. She is the daughter of immigrants from Terceira and Faial, "two of the most beautiful islands in the Azores." Her journey to connect more deeply with her heritage took a significant turn in 2011 when she became involved with the Azorean Whaleboats in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Lara's involvement opened doors that allowed her to immerse herself deeply in the culture, "particularly through participating in international regattas with Pico Island and Faial." Through these experiences, she has built amazing friendships and discovered incredible opportunities to share the Islands' beauty and charm from a local perspective. Her passion for the Açores (Azores in English) continues to grow as she brings the essence of these islands to those around her. "This journey of bridging a creative community between New Bedford and the Azores was inspired by my background in the arts and my commitment to cultural exchange." Lara Harrington received her Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2000. After building and leaving a successful business in fitness, she is excited about her new adventure, Hotel Papel, which includes an art residency program! Welcome, Jimi Blacksheep, AKA James A. Bourne, musical artist. His mantra: sounding good and looking good. His alter ego, his stage persona, is Jimi Blacksheep, and his life has been a musical journey. Now in his 60s, this transplanted New Bedford, Massachusetts, resident is most at home busking on the streets, entertaining pedestrians with his vast catalog of covers and original songs. Jimi Blacksheep has been taking his dream to the streets for quite some time, and he continues to do it with style. He regularly commutes to Boston to entertain pedestrians with his catalog of covers and original songs on the city’s sidewalks. His artistic style is heavily supported by his years in the field of graphic design production. In Episode Six, Dave Reis speaks with internationally renowned, award-winning jazz musician and centenarian, Terry Gibbs, via Zoom from Australia! Terry Gibbs, was born Julius Gubenkon in 1924. The renowned American jazz vibraphonist and band leader is 101 years old! According to his Wikipedia page, Gibbs has performed or recorded with many of the greatest names in Jazz, including  Tommy Dorsey, Chubby Jackson, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Alice Coltrane, Louie Bellson, Charlie Shavers, Mel Tormé, and Buddy DeFranco to name just a few. "I am the oldest bebopper alive!” proclaims 93-year-old Terry Gibbs, according to an article in Jazz Times, "This forefather of the jazz vibraphone may well be right; age-wise he beats out his closest competitors, including Roy Haynes (92), Jimmy Heath (91), Lee Konitz (90) and Sheila Jordan (89). Certainly, few musicians of any age can top his ability to whip up a storm of excitement on his instrument." The Artist Index's jazz documentarian and Jazz Podcast Series host, Dave Reis, spent nearly 26 years as a Jazz radio show host, among his many other accomplishments. He was one of the original longtime DJs who worked at the former WUSM, which became radio station WUMD, 89.3 FM, on the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. Dave Reis, AKA David Domingo Reis, began as our guest on In-Focus Podcast 154 and In-Focus Podcast 181. He returns once again as the host of our first-ever ten-part jazz podcast series underwritten by the Fiber Optic Center. Welcome, John Irwin, a Tiverton, Rhode Island, artist. His studio is in The Handkerchief Factory, which is located in Warren, Rhode Island. Tiverton, by the way, is a part of the South Coast.  John has been painting for almost 50 years. He is a Special Education teacher at East Providence High School and teaches art at his studio and several other venues. John Irwin paints landscapes and portraits in oil and acrylic. He enjoys painting from life but, increasingly, also from memory. For the last half a dozen years, he has been teaching art, and he says, "I think it has made me a much better artist." John Irwin emphasizes drawing and experimentation with his students. He is interested in depicting emotion and feelings in his private work.  John spoke with The Artists Index’s cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, recently about his passion, his life, and his journey as an artist. Welcome, Mwalim (AKA Daphunkee Professor AKA Morgan James Peters), who has been studying music since he was ten years old. He is formally trained in classical, jazz, and is a fourth-generation musician on his mother’s side. Mwalim’s first instrument was the viola, and he performed at Carnegie Hall with an orchestra before he was 14. He also started studying piano and composition with his grandfather, the noted jazz arranger, band leader, and producer for Southern Records and Decca Records, Allan Nurse. Mwalim went to the Music & Art High School (LaGuardia) in New York City, and later earned his BA in Music and an MS in Film from Boston University. He earned an MFA in Writing from Goddard College. Mwalim spoke with The Artists Index’s cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, recently about his passion, his life, and his journey as an artist.
