Auburn’s road trip to Auburn (11:45, SEC Network) might be the most fascinating Week 9 SEC matchup. The Southeastern 16 crew tells you why. Arkansas has, debatably, the SEC’s best offense. Quarterback Taylen Green is a dual-threat nightmare and running back Mike Washington has been terrific. And, offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino is now the head coach. They’ll face an Auburn defense led by Keldric Faulk that’s been both elite and consistent. Auburn allows 17.4 points and 317 yards per game and has not allowed more than 24 points in a game. However, Arkansas’s defense is awful. The Razorbacks allow 32.7 points and 444 yards a game and struggles to tackle and defend the run. The Tigers, with quarterback Jackson Arnold and Jeremiah Cobb, have the ability to run the ball quite well. However, an injury to starting center Connor Lew could be costly. Auburn also has talented receivers in Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton, but the Tigers can’t get them the ball. Arkansas has remained motivated and played teams to the wire in Petrino’s two games, while Auburn seems to struggle with confidence as rumors swirl about coach Hugh Freeze’s future. Topics include: In a bit of a reset year given losses after the 2024 season. coach Josh Heupel has the Vols a few plays from being unbeaten thanks to a high-scoring offense paced by Joey Aguilar, DeSean Bishop and Chris Brazzell. The Tennessee defense has bled yards and points, but some of that is because of tempo (there are 150 plays in the average game the Vols play). So Kentucky needs to replicate last week’s 26-to-8 first-down edge vs. Texas to have a shot an an upset. However, the Tennessee defense has also been good at forcing turnovers and turning them into points, something that Kentucky (two touchdowns with its offense on the field vs. South Carolina) has found problematic. Tennessee is the team with more to play for, but Kentucky showed it hadn’t given up on coach Mark Stoops with a 395-177 loss to Texas in overtime last week. This series has more often been close than not in recent years in Lexington. Southeastern 16 previews the Missouri-at-Vanderbilt contest, which will be the ESPN Game Day selection for Saturday. Vanderbilt is a 2 1/2-point favorite on FanDuel on Monday in a game televised at 2:30 Central on Saturday on ESPN. Topics include: Both teams are College Football Playoff contenders, making this a huge game for each team. Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia has been a two-way wizard and led the Commodores to a win over No. 10 LSU last week. Missouri’s Bo Pribula has had struggles with accuracy and turnovers lately, negating some of the play-making ability that Kevin Coleman Jr., Marquis Johnson and Brett Norfleet offer downfield. The Tigers will need to get All-American candidate Ahmad Hardy Jr. going in the run game. Vanderbilt used tight ends Cole Spence and Eli Stowers effectively against LSU and has some speed at receiver, too. Vanderbilt’s offensive line mashed LSU in the second half of last week’s win. But running back Sedrick Alexander also exited the game before returning due to injury last week. Missouri’s defense has played at an elite level thanks to a great front seven led by Zion Young. Vanderbilt’s defense isn’t filled with big-name players, but the Commodores have generated 22 sacks and were in the face of LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier all last week. The Commodores have an edge at special teams, thanks in no small part to kicker Brock Taylor, while a kicking injury to Blake Craig in the opener has haunted the Tigers all season. Unbeaten Texas A&M travels to LSU for a 6:30 Central kickoff in a contest shown on ABC. The Aggies are 2 1/2-point favorites in a game with a 48 1/2-point over-under, as of Monday, on FanDuel. Topics in our preview include: The Aggies offense, behind Marcel Reed, has been super consistent every week and is perhaps the Southeastern Conference’s most balanced attack. Texas A&M’s big, experienced offensive line is a challenge for any team. Reed is a dual-threat quarterback much like Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia, who gave the Tigers fits in a 31-24 Commodore win last Saturday. But LSU’s defense is also elite. The Tigers have allowed more than 10 points just twice this season and have an elite secondary. Watch to see if linebacker Whit Weeks, who’s been hurt and missed the Vanderbilt game, plays this week. LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier was terrific against Vanderbilt, making a bunch of accurate throws under pressure. The problem for the Tigers is that A&M has 18 sacks; Vanderbilt’s pressure was a problem for LSU last week. Starting left tackle Tyree Adams also got hurt in that game and appears to be out for the A&M contest. LSU is notoriously tough to beat in Tiger Stadium at night, but the Aggies have already notched one of the best road wins in the country (Notre Dame) and went 2-0 on the road last Saturday with a win at Arkansas. Brian Edwards and Chris Lee preview a potentially-more-interesting-than-you-thought game between Oklahoma and South Carolina. The Sooners are favored by 5 1/2 according to FanDuel in a game shown at 11:45 Central on the SEC Network. Topics include: The Sooners don’t force turnovers, while the Gamecocks have turned a few into defensive scores (and kept other teams off the scoreboard by forcing them at critical times). However, Oklahoma has 23 sacks and the Gamecocks have allowed 20, which could be a recipe for that script to flip for the Sooners' defense. Oklahoma’s defense, laden with NFL-level talent, has been stingy in every way imaginable on defense, giving up 9.8 points per game (and seven of those coming via a punt return touchdown last week), 211 yards per game and just 3.7 per play. However, Oklahoma has struggled to run the football and the offense was markedly less effective with John Mateer playing for the first time after hand surgery. The Gamecocks do have talent on defense with Dylan Stewart and allow 5.2 yards per play. LaNorris Sellers and the Gamecocks averaged just 2.2 yards per pass play (adjusted for sacks) last week vs. LSU. However, Carolina had its best rushing performance (248 sack-adjusted yards) against the Tigers last week.
