On this episode of Speaking Queerly, Mallory and Daria talk about music, clothing, finding queer community and more with Violet Stanza (she/they), a New York-based performance artist and content creator. After graduating with a BFA in musical theatre and minor in communications in May 2022, Violet dove head first into the New York arts scene, and has spent the last year exploring opportunities from music directing to acting to modeling, and (perhaps her favorite) writing and performing her original music. She’s written, recorded, and produced four singles entirely independently, which are streaming wherever music is available. She’s a trained singer whose instrumental arsenal currently includes viola, guitar, piano, ukulele, and violin.Violet also thoroughly enjoys working in theatre as a music director and sound designer, and their work in these spaces centers around highlighting their cast’s natural voices and abilities; she is a firm believer that everyone deserves to bring their authentic selves to every rehearsal room. When she’s not working on her music, leading a rehearsal room, at a shoot, or at her stylist job, she can often be found making content for her viral social media channels ranging from stylish “Get Ready with Me” videos to advocating for trans rights and encouraging queer youths to step into their power. You can follow Violet on TikTok and Instagram at @VioletStanza, and check out her music on all streaming platforms.Have a question you want answered or a topic you’d like discussed on Speaking Queerly? We’re using our first episode of Pride Month to showcase one of our former KYC housing youth, Ace (he/him)! At 9-years-old, Ace discovered his entrepreneurial spirit by selling rocks to his neighbors. In middle school, he refined his business tactics by selling chips and candy to his peers (that is, until his teachers told him to stop). Now, at age 19, Ace has started his own all-natural, vegan, nontoxic, organic skincare line, inspired by his mom’s passion for high-quality skincare. On this episode of Speaking Queerly, Mallory and Isiah sit down with Ace to learn more about his experience in KYC’s housing program, the products in his skincare line, the successes and challenges of having his own business and more.Follow Ace’s business on Instagram and TikTok @CovetConcoctions, and you can purchase Covet Concoctions body butters, scrubs, candles and more at www.covetconcoctions.comRead more about Ace and Covet Concoctions here: https://thebuckeyeflame.com/2023/04/04/ine-this-19-year-old-ohio-lgbtq-entrepreneur-went-from-survive-to-thrive/Have a question you want answered or a topic you’d like discussed on Speaking Queerly? CW: N*zis, transphobia, gunsOn Saturday, April 29, 2023, Land-Grant Brewing Company sponsored an annual drag brunch benefitting Kaleidoscope Youth Center. Midway through the event, a group of N*zis clad in red and black arrived wearing masks over their faces and sunglasses over their eyes. They proudly waved a black and white flag bearing a sw*stika while chanting racial epithets, homophobic and transphobic slurs and other harmful and discriminatory phrases. On this episode of Speaking Queerly, Mallory Golski sits down with KYC’s executive director Erin Upchurch, MSSA, LISW-S, and our director of community partnerships and external relations, Jen Kuhn, to discuss the events of that day and how the community worked together to take a stand against the N*zis and rally behind KYC. They answer questions surrounding the police presence at the event, safety at future KYC events, the connection between current discriminatory legislation and the events of this weekend, and how queer joy is the ultimate form of resistance.Have a question you want answered or a topic you’d like discussed on Speaking Queerly?
