Louis P. Masur-A Journey North: Jefferson, Madison, and the Forging of a Friendship

Between May 21 and June 16, 1791, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison went on a trip together through Upstate New York and parts of New England on horseback. This "northern journey" came at a moment of tension for the new nation, one in whose founding these Virginians and political allies had played key roles. The Constitution was ratified, and President Washington was in his first term of office. Whether the country could overcome regional and political differences and remain unified, however, was still very much in question. Hence why some observers at the time wondered whether this excursion into Federalist New England by the two most prominent southern Democratic-Republicans, both future presidents, had an ulterior motive. In A Journey North: Jefferson, Madison, and the Forging of a Friendship, Louis Masur writes that Madison maintained that the journey was for "health, recreation, and curiosity." That he and Jefferson needed a break from their public responsibilities, so off they set. #thomasjefferson #jamesmadison

Nat Segaloff-Bogart and Huston

Bogart and Huston: Their Lives, Their Adventures, and the Classic Movies They Made Together Between 1941 and 1953 director John Huston and actor Humphrey Bogart made one classic film after another: The Maltese Falcon, Across the Pacific, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Key Largo, The African Queen, and Beat the Devil. All of them would be at home on any list of the best movies ever made. They were the result of a close but often combative friendship between the two disparate men: the actor and his best director. Bogart was a homebody who acted tough but wasn’t; Huston was a quiet presence who masterminded storms. This book reveals how they worked with each other and how they took on the world. It covers nine marriages, three wars, the blacklist, one cult, and explains why their collaborations stand the test of time. The text includes biographical information, the histories of making their films, and appendices that enrich the narrative.Nat Segaloff is a writer, broadcaster, teacher, film historian, and raconteur with a varied background in motion picture publicity, journalism, producing, and covering up other people's mistakes. Having begun his career during the exciting transition between the old studios and the film generation of the New Hollywood, he provides both perspective and commentary on a wide range of subjects, many of them having to do with movies. He also tries to return phone calls. Ever since Covid he has been holed up in his secret fortress writing books and recording audiobooks in the companionship of his faithful Italian greyhound, Louie the Wonder Dog. #humphreybogart #johnhuston #natsegaloff #themaltesefalcon

Jonathan Horn-THE FATE OF THE GENERALS

No three words from the annals of World War II have echoed through the decades more deeply than General Douglas MacArthur’s famous vow, following Japan’s invasion of – and MacArthur’s ordered retreat from – the Philippines. Yet, as Jonathan Horn provocatively relates in The Fate of the Generals: MacArthur, Wainwright, and the Epic Battle for the Philippines (Scribner), those same words have obscured a no less important vow by the American general MacArthur left behind to defend the archipelago – Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV. He promised to stay even when it meant becoming the war’s highest-ranking American prisoner. Jonathan Horn is an author and former White House presidential speechwriter whose books include Washington’s End and the Robert E. Lee biography The Man Who Would Not Be Washington, which was a Washington Post bestseller. He has written for outlets including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times Disunion series, New York Post, The Daily Beast, National Review, and POLITICO, and has appeared on CBS Sunday Morning, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and PBS NewsHour. Thomas Wolf- Baseball in the Roaring Twenties: The Yankees, the Cardinals, and the Captivating 1926 Season

The University of Nebraska Press is proud to announce the publication of Baseball in the Roaring Twenties: The Yankees, the Cardinals, and the Captivating 1926 Season by Thomas Wolf, author of The Called Shot: Babe Ruth, the Chicago Cubs, and the Unforgettable Major League Baseball Season of 1932 (Nebraska, 2020), finalist for the Seymour Medal from the Society for American Baseball Research; and coauthor, with Patricia Bryan, of Midnight Assassin: A Murder in America’s Heartland. In 1926 baseball stars of an earlier era still played major roles in the game: Veteran pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander was the hero of the 1926 World Series; Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker faced explosive allegations of game-fixing; Babe Ruth’s mysterious illness and dismal 1925 season convinced many observers that Ruth was finished—over the hill. Meanwhile, new stars like Tony Lazzeri and Lou Gehrig had arrived on the scene, and the Negro Leagues were at the height of their popularity and success with Rube Foster’s Chicago American Giants winning the Colored World Series of 1926. Isabel Canas-The Possession of Alba Diaz

Mexican-American author Isabel Cañas blazed onto the horror scene in 2022 with The Hacienda, a stunning Latinx take on the  haunted house tale, followed up Vampires of El Norte (2023), an equally rich Western-meets-horror-meets-vampire novel.Cañas’ third novel, THE POSSESSION OF ALBA DÍAZ (Berkley Hardcover), is a supernatural-meets-body-horror story of demonic possession, set in 1765 among the silver mines of Mexico. Kneading together mysticism and sorcery, the science and supernatural powers of alchemy, and the patriarchal grip of the Church on mining towns, THE POSSESSION OF ALBA DÍAZ is ultimately a terrifying historical horror about the earthly and unearthly ways in which a woman’s body can be owned.

The book approaches Sully’s portraits as visual documents in the history of Philadelphia in the first half of the nineteenth century.About the authorPeter Conn's two most recent books are The American 1930s: a Literary History (Cambridge University Press, 2009), and Adoption: a Brief Social and Cultural History (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013).
