In our readings, we continue with Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. We move away from ‘blessed are’ … and ‘you are salt and light’ to ‘Do not’ and ‘You have heard it said’. The post St. Brigid’s – The Rev. Marnie Peterson appeared first on Christ Church Cathedral.

In this darkening world, it can be impossible to believe that the light will shine again, that in this darkening world cloaked in despair, shrouded in pain, something new is to be born. This time of year we are reminded, that God will find a way, and that in the midst of whatever trials we face, we will be embraced in the centre of God’s own heart. w did you come to faith? Is there a concrete moment you could recall as the one important moment? Maybe it was more of a longer process or it happened that early in your life that you can’t remember. The post St. Brigid’s – The Rev. André Stephany appeared first on Christ Church Cathedral.
The Gospel today speaks of how impossible it is to serve two masters. We can read that as the struggle between being a part of this world, today, and being a part of God's world. The post St. Brigid’s – The Rev. Marnie Peterson appeared first on Christ Church Cathedral.
Tonight, in keeping with the calendar of our church we are celebrating the Feast of the Holy Cross. This is a celebration of the veneration of the cross on which Jesus died and it’s actually one of our oldest celebrations in the church. The story of how this came to be goes something like this: The post St. Brigid’s – The Rev. Marnie Peterson appeared first on Christ Church Cathedral.
The lectionary gives up readings that seem like periscopes, they come up with no context. LIke tonight's reading. What are we supposed to do with it? Really Jesus? Hate my mother and father, my siblings and children? AND sell of my possessions? Listen Jesus, you are not really selling this for me. The post St. Brigid’s – The Rev. Tonight, I would like us to think about hospitality together. And not just about what it means to offer hospitality here, in our church – though I think that’s also important. But I want to think about how we offer hospitality once we leave here. I want to think about how what we do and think about here, impacts how and who we are once we leave this sanctuary. Earlier this year, based on the recommendation from a dear friend, I picked up the novel This is How it Always Is. The book follows a mother of four boys, who in the opening chapter we find out is pregnant again, and this time, she’s really hoping for a girl. But, instead, she gets Claude, another boy. Or so she thinks. At five years old, Claude loves peanut butter sandwiches. And wearing a dress. And dreams of being a princess. After Jesus had gone up to the mountain to pray, and after he had spent the night in prayer to God, Jesus called his disciples. And after that long night of prayer, seeking the mind and the heart of Creator, Jesus chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, And his brother Andrew, And James, and John, and Philip. There was Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who wasn’t always, but eventually became a traitor. I begin my class each fall by asking students to tell me why they are there. The fact that I teach a required course means I have to phrase this a particular way. I ask them “what question brought you here?” I’ve no doubt they are curious (and rightly so) about the history of Christianity, the methods of pastoral planning, and the dates of II Kings, but I hear no questions about these things (at least not at this juncture). One by one the questions they’ve brought with them fill the board. The post St. Brigids – The Rev. Janet Gear appeared first on Christ Church Cathedral.
