Description

There are a lot of amazing stories in the world of sports that you'll never hear about. From small publishers who are members of our StadiumScene.TV Network (Ten Minutes With...), stories you thought you knew (Sports Stories), and interviews with guests that you've heard of (An Interview With...).

StadiumScene.TV's Main Event takes that deeper dive into the sports world and looks at the good, the bad, the funny, and the controversial topics that are what we love about sports. Join co-hosts D.J. Fluck, Kate Thompson, and Ralph Schudel as we hear their stories.

It's been well over a year since the last episode of Stadium Scene's Main Event. In this special edition we talk about what's been up, officially welcome our long-time friend Ralph Schudel to the team, and go over the direction of Stadium Scene in 2024 and beyond. Initially, we talked about 2023 and how the law known as "Section 230" and the formal end of the COVID-19 pandemic shifted our strategy. Had the US Supreme Court overturned Section 230, it likely would have resulted in us having to shut down. We go into why. The big changes for 2024 include: - No longer taking on new blog partners (our current blog partners will be supported as long as they continue to run their blogs) - Rebranding of our podcast section to Stadium Scene Radio which includes a plan to introduce live radio in late 2024 - Continued growth of the Stadium Scene TV channel with sports talk shows, Wednesday Night Dash, and a new IndyCar-themed iRacing league that will debut in February as long as the iRacing/IndyCar licensing issues are resolved by then. In part two of the episode, Ralph and D.J. play True/False with sports stories that could happen in 2024. Does Messi "slow down", do the Las Vegas Aces repeat as WNBA champions, and much more! Thank you again for your ongoing support of Stadium Scene and we look forward to serving you with new content in 2024! Yes indeed, we still record this show!  Kate had a scheduling conflict, but D.J. runs the show (long as usual when he is by himself) and is joined by Joshua Gupton and Trevor Everette of The Two Pointers Podcast!  The Two Pointers Podcast is the latest member of the Stadium Scene Network and they have easily a top five epic story about how the two of them met dating back to elementary school.  It's very clear their love for all things college and pro basketball led to the creation and the success of this show, which is about to reach the 100-episode milestone. We talk about how they were a "Pandemic Podcast", although they started much later than the usual podcasts, some early luck with the pilot episode that is the exception to the rule, and how they kept things going after most of the podcasts created at the start of the pandemic shut down and were never heard from again. We close out the show talking about a really good piece of advice that they wish they knew when they were starting their show. Our friend Gianna Belcastro from Women's Sports Matter Podcast joins D.J. for a special Sunday edition of the show.  Gianna is graduating from Community College in May and has decided to move on to complete their education at a four-year school.   We're super excited to have Gianna break the news here.  Before we get to the decision, we talk about the podcast, the new season coming up in May, and the positive experiences of Community College.  The college decision starts around the 14:00 mark. D.J. and Kate are back with the second "Ten Minutes With..." episode of 2022.  Yes, we know the episode is 24 minutes long.  Just like the Big Ten Conference, we cannot count either.   Today we are joined by Gianna Belcastro, host of "Women's Sports Matter Podcast".  Gianna is another "pandemic created podcast" that has continued on even after most of the pandemic created podcasts have ended.  They feature some of the top women and women's sports leagues in the world along with interview coaches, players, and other important people in the sports.   In addition, we discuss the challenges of being a woman/non-binary person in sports and the importance of discussing and bringing to light scandals such as the NWSL player abuse scandal and how they went for so long without the general public being aware.    Gianna also discusses being invited to podcast row of the United Soccer Coaches Convention and performing a live audience broadcast at a convention just outside of Chicago.  A very packed 24 minutes with some incredible deep discussion.   Be sure to check out this new episode and don't forget to check out Women's Sports Matters wherever you download your favorite podcasts.   Facebook Twitter Instagram As usual, the video for this episode can be found on our YouTube channel.  Be sure to hit subscribe! After a long hiatus, Kate and D.J. are back with the first Ten Minutes With... of 2022!  Today they are joined by Sean and Drew of "Winning Losers Podcast".  We get right into discussing how they met through a mutual friend and what the inspiration was for starting a podcast.  We side track and talk successful college coaches who have flopped in the NFL, stand up comedy, and the most awkward time Sean bombed on stage at a stand up gig.  Stick around to hear Sean and Drew's advice for how to be better at podcasting. It's something you won't want to miss!   Be sure to check out Winning Losers Podcast wherever you listen to your favorite podcast and follow them on social media: Twitter Instagram As usual, if you prefer to listen to the episode, be sure to subscribe to "Stadium Scene's Main Event" wherever you download your favorite podcast!  Today's episode is brought to you by Linq.  Bring your business card to the 21st century and save 15% with promo code stadiumscene at checkout! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stadiumscene/message
In our next episode of "Play x Play," Kate and D.J. discuss "Lucky Bastard" by Joe Buck.  Pretty much all of us have seen Joe Buck call either an NFL or MLB game for FOX at some point in the last 30 years and he is often one of the more criticized announcers of our generation.  That being said, we discuss the book and overall thought it was very open, honest, and entertaining to the point that when it was released in 2016, several people had a change of heart about him.   In the episode, we go over some of our favorite chapters of the book, comment on his footnotes, his relationship with his famous father, Jack Buck, how a cheap plastic batting helmet may have saved his life, and talk about his unusual family situation growing up.  For September, we will be reading "It's Game Time Folks - The Quest for 30" by our good friend Mark Darden.  Be sure to check out both books on Amazon by clicking the links below.   Your purchase will pay us a small commission that helps keep Stadium Scene TV running and allows us to continue to grow and expand our operation.   Lucky Bastard "It's Game Time Folks: The Quest For 30" As usual, the video for this episode can be found on our YouTube channel. Today Kate and D.J. are joined by blogger, Chelsea Renee of "Chat With Chelsea Renee.  Chelsea is based in the southeastern US and writes about all things Atlanta sports (Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta United, Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Dream), along with Alabama sports, and women's sports.   We get into why she became a blogger, a discussion about rush week at the University of Alabama (which D.J. had no idea what they were talking about), and the legacy of Nick Saban and how much longer will he remain in Tuscaloosa.    Finally, we get into her advice for blogging and being organized with content.   Be sure to visit her website and follow her on social media: Facebook Twitter Pinterest Instagram Be sure to check out the video of this episode and subscribe to our YouTube channel! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stadiumscene/message
Today we look at the story behind what caused the infamous power outage at Super Bowl XLVII at the Mercedes-Benz SuperDome in New Orleans, LA,, featuring the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers back on February 3, 2013.  We even feature the clip where friend of the show and former Ravens safety, Bernard Pollard talks about being on the field and his reaction to the lights shutting off during the game.  Since most people watching this are not technical people or Electrical Engineers, the explanations in this story are kept very basic.  If you're interested in the full technical report, check it out here. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stadiumscene/message
We're trying something new this week over at the show.  Once a month, Kate and D.J. will be discussing a book on the topic of sports or journalism.  This was NOT a paid review or promotion by the author or publisher of the book.  A list is compiled by Kate and D.J. and the book each month is selected at random.   For our first episode, "Talking to GOATs" by Jim Gray is discussed.  He is a reporter who just seemed to be at the right place at the right time for several major sports events over the last 30+ years.  We talk Tyson vs Holyfield II (The ear bite fight), Lebron James' "The Decision", Jim's infamous interview with Pete Rose, discovering a very young Tiger Woods, his friendships and relationships he's built over his career and a wonderful Masters story about and tribute to his late father. Mr. Gray - You have an open invitation to come on the show any time to talk! We really enjoyed the read! It was definitely worth the read, so be sure to go check out "Talking to GOATs" and next month our featured book is "Lucky Bastard" by Joe Buck.  Go order it and read along with us! Note - We are members of the Amazon Affiliate Program, so if you click the link and purchase something we receive a small commission for the referral.  You do not get charged anything extra and every little bit helps continue to fund our little StadiumScene.TV. So we said last week when we released episode 100 that it was difficult to edit because there was just so much good material and we wanted to keep the show around the one-hour mark.  We couldn't let all this good material go to waste, so episode 101 is the best of what got cut from episode 100!  Note that some of these segments appeared in episode 100, but we have the full unedited segment.  The first segment is D.J. going on about Jeppson's Malört, first with Kate and then second with guests Adam Corsair and Kevin Pettit.  Learn about this infamous Chicago drink and why some people call it the "World's Worst Liquor".   In our next segment, we return to the interview with Ralph Schudel and play a clip from before we actually started the segment.  It turns out to be a lot of bad impressions (Tom Brokaw, Dick Vitale and his Hooters Commercial (https://youtu.be/RSdyD-1xdk0), Gheorghe Muresan and his Snickers cologne commercial (https://youtu.be/CuU9DjeLESY), and former Cavalier/Laker Timofey Mozgov with the backward jersey (https://youtu.be/mWS9OaIXH4E).   Next, we have a quick clip of Kate (15:06) talking about how she signed up for Red Bull Flugtag when she was 13 and the interesting response she got from the company...    Finally, we have a nice discussion with Adam Corsair and Kevin Pettit about giving up on podcasts, the surprisingly low number of episodes it takes to be in the "top 1%" of most episodes released,  taking criticism online for takes, handling negative reviews....and then Canadian Geese?   Be sure to check out the video for this episode and subscribe to our YouTube channel! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stadiumscene/message
It's hard to believe when we started our show as a podcast in February of 2017 that we would ever reach 100 episodes.  In fact, as of 2020, we only had 35.  Add 65 more shows between March of 2020 and today and here we are with milestone episode 100!  We decided the only appropriate way to celebrate 100 episodes is to talk about our previous 99 episodes, take a shot of Malört and visit with our first partners that helped us build this site into something special.   First, we sit down with our old friend Ralph Schudel (ralphschudel.com) and talk about how we met back after the #SaveTheCrew movement started.  It's really incredible how in just four years the Columbus Crew went from being moved to Austin to an expansion franchise was added to Austin, new ownership comes in, and Lower.com Field just recently opened in downtown Columbus, Ohio.   In our next segment, we talk about our earliest shows, shifting our show concept over to being more interview-based, and our first guests who may not be household names, but have amazing stories to share.  We actually had our first famous guests with Michelle McMahon from Big Ten Network and Super Bowl Champion Bernard Pollard stopping by and visiting the show.   The next throw to segment is with our friend Dave Knittel.  Dave runs the popular "The Soccer Tavern" channel on YouTube discussing the history and teams of soccer.  Dave also co-hosted the "Bros Talking Soccer" podcast with his brothers and famously hosted a daily episode after each day of action in the 2018 Men's and 2019 Women's World Cups.   Next up, we talk about how 2020 and the pandemic changed the trajectory of this show, where we talked with legendary Cubs radio broadcaster Pat Hughes, Andrew Dymburt of ABC News Now, and how watching a rerun of ABC's Wipeout at 11pm on a Saturday night inspired D.J. to take a chance and reach out to John Anderson at ESPN and resulted in an incredibly fun interview.   In our final throw to segment, we interview our two active longest partners Kevin Pettit (Loud Americans Discussing Soccer Podcast) and Adam Corsair (South of the 6ix, Jaybird Watching Podcast) about D.J. randomly reaching out to them when the site first started about this crazy idea.  Both guests were fairly new at their shows and took a chance to partner with us.  If it wasn't for them, this concept would have failed after six months.  We can't say thank you enough to the two of them for helping get us on our feet.   Finally, we close out the show talking about our new Book Club segment and perhaps we've accidentally created a new segment. The discussion with Kevin and Adam about dealing with criticism, bad reviews, and nasty emails which make you want to quit were too good to cut, so we're going to be releasing all of that in next week's episode!  Thank you again to everyone who has made StadiumScene.TV a success so far. We cannot thank you enough.  Here's to the next 100 episodes not taking four years! If you missed Part One with Fox Sports Men's College Basketball Analyst, CBS Sports (during March Madness), and former Men's basketball head coach of UCLA and St John's Steve Lavin, scroll up on your podcast app and check it out! In part two of the episode, we discuss how the recruiting scandal involving Coach Harrick resulted in Steve being promoted to Interim Head Coach, the tough start, and the support from Coach John Wooden ultimately resulting in the Interim tag being removed later in his first season.   Next, we move on and talk about how he transitioned to the broadcast booth and the inspiration of broadcasters and even Larry King that inspired him and develop the skills that have helped him be successful on TV today.   We then move on to a discussion about being diagnosed with prostate cancer while working for St John's University and the preparation beforehand with recruiting and giving his assistant coaches a chance to be successful during his absence.  He also notes how his father was an important support figure that helped him through the most difficult stage of his life.   We finish up the episode on a lighter note talking golf tournaments, and for some reason, Kate asks another animal-type question to which Steve gave the most well thought out answer we've ever seen to one of Kate's off-the-wall questions.   Be sure to follow Steve on social media and check him out on Fox Sports during the college basketball season! We're extremely excited to have Fox Sports Men's College Basketball Analyst, CBS Sports (during March Madness), and former Men's basketball head coach of UCLA and St John's Steve Lavin join us today in the first of a two-part episode.  We kick off the episode talking about playing basketball in high school and how before the era of YouTube, cell phone cameras, and a million sports networks how you would get exposure with college scouts.    Next, we talk about his transition into the coaching world and how he wrote letters to legendary coaches like Bob Knight, Gene Keady, and Jerry Tarkanian for advice on how to break into the ranks of coaching.  Steve eventually was hired as an assistant at D.J.'s alma mater, Purdue University under the legendary coach Gene Keady.  While at Purdue, Steve talks about coaching a young Matt Painter, who is currently having a great coaching career at Purdue, and meeting the legendary Coach John Wooden (also an alumna of Purdue University).   Ultimately his relationship with Coach Wooden resulted in him taking an Assistant Coach position at UCLA under former coach Jim Herrick.  We finish out part one talking about the 1995 National Championship season and Tyus Edney's famous buzzer-beater against Mizzou in 1995 and a little-known story about Steve's celebration after the buzzer.   Check back again next week for Part 2 as we talk about how a recruiting scandal led to him becoming the head coach at UCLA, along with Coach Wooden's support, moving to television, and being diagnosed with prostate cancer while coaching at St John's University.   Be sure to follow Steve on social media and check him out on Fox Sports during the college basketball season! Kate is at the vet getting rabies shots...I assume for her dog and not for her, which is a bummer because Kate missed out on a discussion with a Wisconsin-based podcast, "In a League of Their Own Podcast", featuring Collin and Austin.   Collin and Austin talk about how they met and how the show is about to be a family event.  In addition, we get into the local hockey scene in Wisconsin and how they have connections to players who are currently in the NHL.   Stick around until the end for their piece of advice for a rookie podcaster and don't forget to subscribe to In A League of Their Own Podcast wherever you download your favorite podcasts.   Social Media:  YouTube  Facebook Twitter Instagram Be sure to check out the video of this episode and subscribe over at our YouTube channel! If you missed part 1 of the episode and the prank pulled on Kate, check it out!  We pick up the competitive swimming discussion with Erik Richardson, Assistant Coach for Men's and Women's Swimming at Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan.  In this week's episode, we talk about Tokyo 2020 still being Tokyo 2020 in 2021, why epic moments in Olympic swimming like Michael Phelps eight gold medals in the 2008 Bejing games.   Erik also worked at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and has seen many of these swimmers up close and personal during training and heard some of the legendary coaches like Bob Bowman coach his swimmers while being paid on the job.    We also get into a discussion about how it's funny that lifeguards are on duty for Olympic swimmers practicing and competing, but water safety is a very serious issue with thousands of people drowning or nearly drowning every year.  Living in the south where almost everyone has a pool it's very easy for kids to sneak away and accidentally fall in or have a medical emergency in the pool, so make sure you and your kids take appropriate swimming lessons and have tarps and gates in place so drowning accidents do not occur.   We close out the show trading stories about the antics of high school and college which helped Kate understand more of why D.J. is the way he is.  Subscribe to our YouTube channel and check out the video of today's episode! With the Tokyo Summer Olympics coming up, we thought it would be appropriate to bring on someone to talk about competitive swimming.  There is always an uptick in interest in competitive swimming after the Olympics.   Our guest today is Erik Richardson, Assistant Coach for Men's and Women's Swimming at Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan.  Erik was a swimmer for the University of Evansville and has coached at club, high school, and now at the college level.   About 8 minutes into the episode, Kate finds out that D.J. and Erik pulled a prank on her and that they've been friends since 4th grade.  Erik and D.J. grew up in the same neighborhood in central Indiana.  After some technical difficulties with Kate's Zoom connection, we talk about Erik briefly participating in the Winter Olympic sport of Skeleton and what that is exactly.   Finally, we close out part 1 talking about various events, practicing, and the differences between coaching club kids, high school, college, and the challenges of recruiting swimmers at a DIII college.   Check back for Part Two next week where we talk about Olympic Swimming, Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Katie Ledecky, and how the popularity of participating in competitive swimming always seems to increase in an Olympic year. Main Event is proud to share the long-awaited return of StadiumScene.TV's Sports Stories is here!  In our first episode back, we have taken on the role of hybrid talk show and documentary by featuring a StadiumScene.TV partner helping us tell a story about a memorable or controversial experience where they have a personal experience with that story.  In our first episode back, we have our old friend and now frequent pilot regular, Ralph Schudel of ralphschudel.com talk to us about growing up in northeast Ohio and experiencing the Cleveland Browns moving to Baltimore.   This episode is the unofficial sequel of our popular "Colts Move to Indy" episode from 2017.  Ralph introduces us to the key players of the Cleveland Browns move such as owner Art Modell and minority owner, Al Learner (spoiler alert: he returns again at the end), some former Browns coach named Bill Belichick (yes, that one), and how the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium along with the Cleveland Indians leaving for Jacobs Field (now Progressive Field) helped accelerate the move out of Cleveland.  In the end, as we all know, the Browns returned to Cleveland as an expansion franchise in 1999 and Ralph closes out the episode talking about how much the Browns mean/meant to the people of northeast Ohio.   Bonus question... why does legendary movie Director Richard Donner (Superman, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon series) have a bust of Abraham Lincoln in his office?  Stay tuned to the very end to find out why!   Check out Ralph's work: Website Twitter Instagram The full video for this episode can be found on our YouTube channel.  Be sure to subscribe and see much more! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stadiumscene/message
So apparently now Zoom tells you in an AM radio quality audio that your meeting is recorded.  Definitely caught us off guard at the start today and it was too good to edit out, so that's the opening today. We're super excited to sit down with Ashleigh Binder of Sports As Told By a Girl.  Ashleigh partnered with us in our early days of the site and has published over 300 articles to our site since joining us in 2018!  She starts off the episode by telling us the origin story of how the blog was originally part of a "build a website" class in college that just kept on going.   Ashleigh also enjoys meeting and working with others who provide different perspectives in sports and how she's had tens of women join and write for the site, including some who have spun off and started their own blogs as a result!  We also have a discussion about her experiences with trolling for being a woman who discusses sports and provides her advice for how to deal with it.  Plus, how do WNBA posts do from a traffic standpoint? Finally, stick around to hear her advice for a rookie blogger! We shouldn't record episodes on Friday afternoon because...well watch and see.     We're super excited to have Emily Williams back on the show two months after her first appearance promoting her book, Lady-Thletes (available at Amazon and maybe your local public library?!).    We've been chatting with Emily since her visit and she has decided that the next step after the book was to start her very own podcast!  On Saturday, May 15th she launched the very first episode of Lady-Thletes: The Show!   What's also exciting is that we're helping her produce it!  This is our first venture down the path of producing someone else's material and we couldn't be more excited to work with Emily on this project!  Emily talks about the process of building up to the first episode, the necessary preparation and the learning curve of planning episodes, finding guests, and creating seasons to avoid burning out during the project.  Emily will be interviewing people involved with women's sports, coaching, and sharing her thoughts about coaching in the episodes, so be sure to subscribe and check out season 1!   As mentioned above, be sure to subscribe to Lady-Thletes: The Show and follow Emily on social media! -  Subscribe To The Podcast Instagram Instagram (Emily) As usual, the video for this episode can be found on our YouTube channel.  Subscribe today and never miss an episode! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stadiumscene/message
Kate is back with us today and we kick off our cold open talking about our interview with Phil Schoen from BeIN Sports (skip to 4:16 unless you want to hear Ray Hudson's greatest call ever in D.J.'s opinion).  Phil has been a staple of the soccer announcing community for three decades and covered everything from low-level soccer to professional level, and even the World Cup for ESPN, Fox, GolTV, and now BeIN Sports.   We talk to Phil about his beginnings in Miami and his love for the game watching his local Ft Lauderdale Strikers play in the NASL and learning about a player named Ray Hudson, who like most of us know went on to be his long time broadcast partner calling games in Spain (La Liga), France (Ligue 1).  Phil talks about the growth of soccer and how the creation of the MLS helped him reach the national television stage and how while broadcasting with the MLS he met up with Ray Hudson and tried to get him to join the booth.   We move on and talk about what are the next steps that need to be taken in the USA to take the game to the next level (make MLS more of a global force, USMNT competing deep into World Cups).  D.J. also shares a story of an amusing conversation young DC United Assistant in the mid-90s at a US Open Cup game who has later become quite the head coach himself.   Phil also talks about the "soccer vs football" debate and has a unique perspective on it and closes up the show talking about how in the last few years has gotten started building up his own voice-over company, VoiceGoals, and the challenges associated with going into business yourself.   Check out more about Phil:  Phil's Website VoiceGoals Twitter Instagram If you want to see the video of this interview and Kate's facial expression to Ray Hudson's call, be sure to subscribe to us on YouTube! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stadiumscene/message
