In this month’s episode, we sit down with Timberly Russell from the Martha O'Bryan Center in Nashville to explore a critical issue facing many working families: the benefits cliff. This phenomenon occurs when individuals receiving public assistance face a tough choice—accept a raise or promotion and risk losing essential benefits, or turn down career advancement to maintain support. Timberly shares how the Martha O'Bryan Center is working to address this issue through advocacy and policy efforts at both the state and federal levels. We also learn more about the Center’s wide range of support services, including adult education, health and wellness programs, and an on-site food bank.

Host Chris Cannon speaks with State Apprenticeship Director Shalondria Shaw and Deputy State Apprenticeship Director Autumn Derrick about youth apprenticeships in the state of Tennessee. In addition, Tiffany Phillips of Rutherford County Schools and Katrina Rucker of Roscoe Brown Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing about their mechanical and electrical plumbing pre-apprenticeship. Roscoe Brown has put through over 90 pre-apprentices through their apprenticeship program.National Youth Apprenticeship Week is May 5-11 in the United States.

On this edition of Tennessee's Workforce Reimagined, we talk with State Apprenticeship Director, Shalondria Shaw and Deputy State Apprenticeship Director, Autumn Derrick of Apprenticeship TN. In 2019, the State of Tennessee started Apprenticeship TN, in about 4 years the state of Tennessee has over 8,300 active apprentices and 375 Registered Programs. Apprenticeships are a great way to earn while you learn on the way to a career in an industry. Shalondria and Autumn discuss why ApprenticeshipTN became a State Apprenticeship Agency, bringing Registered Apprenticeships to the healthcare industry, and National Apprenticeship Week from November 13-19.
