Steel Magnolias Podcast

Two sisters, Lainie and Laura Beth, who love family, traditions, and all things Southern! There's plenty of room at the table, so pull up a chair as we discuss Southern culture, food, hospitality, travel, history, regional events, college football, and more! Whether you are new to the South, never left the South, or just curious about the South, come on in!

Final Episode: What We've Learned from This Podcast

We got lots of ground to cover on this episode! We’re gonna be talking about why we’ll never stop loving the South and many of the things that we learned from this podcast. As many of you know, we started this show 6 years ago this week. November of 2018! We’ve come a long way in terms of our podcast. We have a better format, flow, editing, sound, yes, we still say “um” and get things wrong from time to time, but overall we are really, really proud of the last 255 episodes. We’ve covered SO MANY aspects of Southern Culture. And now, it feels as though the time has come to tie a bow on this project so that we may say yes to other things that we feel we are being called to or that we simply want to give space to, so that we can be called to. We’ve put our heart and soul into this show. We hope you feel that. It’s been a true labor of love. I’m not sure you all will ever know how much we think about the podcast or how many hours it takes to set up, record, edit, post, share on socials, etc. but it’s been so worth it!We had fun sharing our 'learnings' with you on this episode, and we hope you will continue to stay curious about the American South and seek beauty here. We believe you'll find it.Peace Be With Y'all!-Lainie and Laura BethSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/steel-magnolias-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Sister Chat: Election Day Table Talk

We wanted to take time to address how to walk out your relationships and hospitality head on before the election results are tallied. How we do those things practically do not change dependent on circumstances or election outcomes. Join us at the table as we discuss how we plan to do this. This particular episode is going to feel a bit more built on our Christian faith because that is the only way we know how to walk out loving people who think differently than we do. Honestly, we don’t have a lot to offer on how to walk this out practically other than leaning in to our Christian faith on how we can have the mind of Christ. Mentioned in this episode:Read The Sermon on the Mount - The Beatitudes. (Matthew 5: 3-10) Our friend Pastor Glenda Sutton says, this is the attitudes we need to Be In! The whole chapter of Matthew 5 is a great place to start. This chapter also includes verses 45-48 which is all about loving our enemies. Matthew 5:43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,[i] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.Scriptures about praying for leaders:1 Timothy 2:1-2 - I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.1 Peter 2:17 - Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.Romans 13:1 - Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. (He will use whoever is in office to accomplish his purposes, but it is not always through signing of bills/laws)Jeremiah 29:7 - Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.Psalms 2:10-11 - Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.Proverbs 11:14 - For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.Proverbs 21:1 - The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will.Local pastor sermon Laura Beth referred to comes from Church of the City (Franklin) and pastor Darren Whitehead- https://www.youtube.com/live/QwkJ9kEiIJYMay the peace of the Lord be with y'all!Steel Magnolias Podcast is an independent show funded solely on support from listeners like you and a few advertisers from time to time. Are you enjoying the show? Western Swing

Clearly, we are lovers of the American South. There are many facets to this diamond of a region, but it has been the birthplace of almost all of the music genres. This great nation has join us at the table as we discuss western swing.Western swing is a combination of many genres, including blues, jazz, polka, country, and more. It's characterized by a strong dance rhythm and the use of electrically amplified stringed instruments, like the steel guitar.Let’s not forget that the point of this music was and always has been to get people dancing! In this episode, we introduced you to our Fort Worth, Texas friend, Devon Dawson. Miss Devon is a top entertainer in western music, and has been recognized by the Academy of Western Artists as the Female Performer of the Year 2009. She's noted for her vintage sock-rhythm guitar style, and warm 'swingtime cowgirl' vocals, which bring to mind legendary B-western ladies of the silver screen, Dale Evans, Rosalie Allen, Patsy Montana, etc. Like them, her lively persona intrigues and engages both kids and adults in her audience. She holds a Grammy certificate for her participation as the singin', yodelin' voice of Jessie, on the Walt Disney CD, Woody's Roundup featuring Riders in the Sky, which was the follow-up to the movie, inspired by the characters of Toy Story 2. She has performed in and out of that character coast-to-coast, and all across the American West, including at the renowned Grand Old Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, and at Pixar Studios in Emeryville, California. Why the stardom? How did he sell out 2 nights at Neyland Stadium? He’s been named Billboard’s Top Country Artist in 2021, 2022, and 2023 and maybe he’ll get that same title again for 2024. He competed on NBC's 'The Voice' in 2014, his coach was Usher: and Morgan was eliminated during The Playoffs. A year later in August 2015, he released 'Stand Alone,' his first EP, with debut studio album 'If I Know Me' arriving in April 2018. The album peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and spent 251 weeks on the chart. Its second single, "Up Down" with Florida Georgia Line, cracked the Hot 100 to reach No. 49. In addition to going six-times Platinum, seven songs from Dangerous have received new Platinum awards, such as the much-loved singles, ‘More Than My Hometown’ (five-times Platinum) and ‘Somebody's Problem’ (three-times Platinum). In March 2022, the album established the all-time record for longest duration in the number one spot (97 weeks) on Billboard's Country Albums chartDangerous spent 86 weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart, breaking the record for the most weeks in the top 10 by a single artist. Wallen’s One Thing at a Time album, which houses 36 songs, opened atop Top Country Albums as well as the all-genre Billboard 200 with the largest streaming week ever for a country albumOne Thing at a Time had the most weeks at No. 1 among all albums since Adele’s 21 logged 24 nonconsecutive weeks atop the tally in 2011-12. One Thing at a Time debuted atop the chart dated March 18, 2023, and spent its first 12 weeks at No. 1 through early June.We had an amazing opportunity and a great time at the Neyland Stadium show in Knoxville, TN where he played two monumental nights totaling 156,161 fans across both nights, surpassing the record previously held by The Jackson 5 across three shows in 1984 (148,407).Find out more: https://morganwallen.com/Steel Magnolias Podcast is an independent show funded solely on support from listeners like you and a few advertisers from time to time. Are you enjoying the show? Male Southern Authors

Southern writers are at a bit of an advantage in that we have a powerful sense of place, but mostly we know characters. We ARE characters. We come from families, neighborhoods, churches, and kinfolk that are the stuff you think is made up, but only slightly. We love an embellished story. We are storytellers. To be southern is to be a good storyteller. Join us at the table as we discuss male southern authors. We already did an episode on female southern authors. Sacred Harp

Sacred Harp singing is a tradition of sacred choral music sung a capella that did not originate in the South but has been kept alive in the South. The 4-tone scale, fa-sol-la-mi, is sung by reading notes shaped in a triangle, circle, square or diamond. Muscle Shoals

"Any discussion about American music that doesn’t include Muscle Shoals, Alabama isn’t really a discussion at all.” That’s a direct quote from the website of FAME STUDIOS. We had a chance to visit Muscle Shoals and the 2 studios that stayed undercover for most of the 60’s and 70’s while legends came to record with a producer and a rhythm section that should be household names. Join us at the table as we discuss the music of Muscle Shoals. If you’re a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan you may have caught the name Muscle Shoals in some lyrics, but you may have NEVER EVER heard of this place and that’s ok. Gullah Geechee

Located on the sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia are communities of people who are descendants of enslaved Africans. They have a unique culture that is directly linked to West Africa. In South Carolina, this group of African-Americans and the language they speak are referred to as Gullah, and in Georgia they are called Geechee. Many historians believe the word Gullah comes from Angola a West African country from which many of the slaves came. Another idea is that Gullah is from the Gola, a tribe from the border of Liberia and Sierra Leone West Africa, although the exact origin of the word is not known most historians agree that the Gulla people and their language have African roots us at the table as we discussed this piece of southern cultureMentioned in this episode:Our interview with Lynette White of the Plantation Singers can be found as part of our Charleston episode on “Have Love, Will Travel” https://www.accessmore.com/pd/Have-Love-Will-Travel-Try Benne Crackers! We recommend Marsh Hen Mill for Carolina Gold Rice (or Grits!) The Steel Magnolia Bed & Breakfast: Natchitoches, Louisiana

If walls could talk, the Steel Magnolia Bed & Breakfast in Natchitoches would have hundreds of stories to tell. The home is located in Natchitoches, Louisiana where the writer of the play, Robert Darling, originally grew up. The 1989 film was shot here in this very small town and today the central home to this story is run as a bed & breakfast. Can you imagine Sally Field, Shirley McLaine, Julia Roberts, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton and Daryl Hannah all coming to your very small town? Today, Natchitoches has a population less than 20,000. Named after a Native American tribe, Natchitoches (pronounced Nack-a-tish ) is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase Territory. Since 1927, they have been home to one of the oldest community-based holiday celebrations in the country, and today their annual Christmas festival lasts 6 weeks!
