A step away from the normal on Stock Market Movers this week. There were plenty of market update's from NZX companies but this week the focus is on Warren Buffett's annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. This is an 'event' that I look forward to with great anticipation every year and is probably second only to the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting which will be coming in early May. Points of discussion include scaling up, focusing on what is important, capital allocation, share repurchases, risk and what makes a good business. The book discussed in the episode is titled: The Essay's of Warren Buffett. Here Lawrence Cunningham has ordered all of Buffett's letters to shareholders by topic. It is a must read and read again for all investors. You can click on the link below to have a look on Fishpond: The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Investors and Managers Listen in by searching Stock Market Movers on Spotify, Apple or wherever you get your podcasts. If you are looking to get in touch or would like more information go to www.stockmarketmovers.co.nz
As New Zealand's largest listed company by market capitalisation and perhaps the best performing stock in the history of the NZX it is always big news when a2 Milk reports its earnings. This week the company reported its interim results for the half year ended December 2018. Revenue grew over 40% and the company reported a net profit of over $150 million. In this episode, I do a deep dive on a2's results and discuss their strengths, potential risks and the valuation. The other big news during the week was the results of the tax working group. I cut through the media hype and discuss what this could mean specifically related to the taxation of capital gains on shares. Listen in by searching Stock Market Movers on Spotify, Apple or wherever you get your podcasts. If you are looking to get in touch or would like more information go to www.stockmarketmovers.co.nz
NZX companies are starting to provide their trading updates to the market in earnest. The great thing about this is that the podcast is swimming in plenty of content and we talk about plenty of companies such as Briscoes, Contact Energy, South Port, Allied Farmers, Sky City, Promisia, Hallensteins, Millenium & Copthorne, CDL Investments and NZ Oil & Gas. This is more companies than I have ever spoken about and I still find time at the end to have a bit of a discussion about the macro environment. It was a relatively quiet week on the NZX due to the holiday on Wednesday. This didn't stop Pushpay who delivered a strong quarterly update. We also had news during the week from an impending IPO from what could be New Zealand's marijuana play, Cannasouth Cannabis. The final company news is a quick shout out to Orion Healthcare who look set to de-list from the NZX. From an education perspective I will spend some time explaining the difference between limit and market orders along with their pros and cons. And finally I will review the book When Genius Failed by Roger Lowenstein, which is an excellent book that is full of lessons that can be taken away by investors. If you want to find out more about the book follow the link below: When Genius Failed: The Rise and Fall of Long Term Capital Management Listen in by searching Stock Market Movers on Spotify, Apple or wherever you get your podcasts. If you are looking to get in touch or would like more information go to www.stockmarketmovers.co.nz
Normal service resumes this week on the podcast as I review the major stock market related news on the NZX. The big news on the NZX was the downgrade of Air New Zealand profits which caused the stock to drop 12% on the day which no doubt caused at least some of the nearly 26 thousand shareholders some stress. We also talk about the update from casino operator Sky City who had what I would call a normalisation of their profit expectations. I also discuss the Oceania Healthcare interim report which will no doubt be interesting for any holders or retirement stock. Finally I finish off with a quick book review from an excellent short book I read earlier in the year called Zero to One by Peter Thiel. A different type of episode this week. I do a deep dive into MOA Group Limited, I sample some product, talk about the competitive landscape, discuss growth, do some numbers around valuation and talk about the company's prospects. While I am there I find time to talk about some of the companies in the alcohols industry as well as some numbers on beer consumption in New Zealand This is the first episode where we have done a really detailed analysis on a stock. Remember that the information given is based around my opinions on what I have read and learnt about the company. It is therefore subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt. I have done my best to keep everything as accurate as possible but no doubt made a mistake somewhere along the line. Listen in by searching Stock Market Movers on Spotify, Apple or wherever you get your podcasts. If you are looking to get in touch or would like more information go to www.stockmarketmovers.co.nz
With virtually no companies reporting interesting updates it is a quiet time of year for company news on the NZX. Because of this I thought we would do something a little bit different to normal on the podcast this week. This week therefore is more of an educational episode. The first thing we talk about is details of a trade that I have opened and closed recently, we go through how I identified the opportunity, my research process, the mistakes I made and how it ended. The second thing we talk about is a bit of a refresh on the right way to think about stock prices - what matters and what doesn't. And finally we do an update from one of our earlier episodes on the investing landscape in the marijuana industry and what to look out for. Listen in by searching Stock Market Movers on Spotify, Apple or wherever you get your podcasts. If you are looking to get in touch or would like more information go to www.stockmarketmovers.co.nz
Episode 22: in the first episode of 2019 I discuss Pushpay and the announcement that they have reached their goal of being cash flow break even by December 2018. The big news being that they processed US$5 billion in transactions throughout the year. We discuss Kathmandu and their Christmas sales which missed their targets and disappointed the market. Then I do a forward wrap of 2019 and discuss where the NZX is heading in terms of IPOs, I give some ideas for companies on annual reports and then end the show with some advice for 2019. In episode 21 I am lucky enough to interview Tim Brown from Infratil. Tim has been with Infratil since its inception in 1994 and specialises in financial structuring and has been responsible for the funding of both Infratil and a number of investee companies. Tim is currently the chairman of Wellington Airport, one of Infratil's cornerstone investments. This is not only an interesting interview for shareholders of Infratil but also any investor that is looking to find out a bit more about investment management, portfolio management and what to think about when contemplating investing in stocks or other assets. Heading into the final inning of 2018 things get a little bit more quiet on the stock market. However, this does not mean that there is nothing to talk about. Restaurant brands was particularly active this week, announcing that they are bringing Taco Bell to New Zealand and at the same time updating the market on their quarterly performance. The biggest news on the week was the update that the Trade me board has entered into a scheme implementation agreement with Apax Partners. Because the news flow was a bit quiet this week I also give my 2 cents on all of the giant US tech names, Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft. It was another week of pre-Christmas updates as many NZX companies either provided their interim reports or gave market updates. It was also another week of M&A activity and I focus in on this again, talking about the failure from Tourism Holdings to sell its Kiwi Experience division - the Orion Healthcare board set its price for the share buyback - and yes - I talk about the second bidder entering the race for Trademe. In the second half of the episode, I turn the attention to the primary and export industries and discuss updates from Scales, Delegat's and Fonterra. It was a very interesting week on the NZX. Probably the biggest news was the proposed private equity takeover of Trademe. This was an announcement that was out of the blue and caught me by surprise. We also talk a2 Milk this episode and specifically dive into their options regarding capital allocation. The other stock that we talk about is Metro Performance Glass who had in my view a bizarre update during the week and found their shareprice absolutely smashed because of it. Episode 16 is the episode that I am trying to go through without saying 'um' - spoiler, I do not succeed. In terms of stocks, it is back to basics with a discussion on one of New Zealand's oldest listed companies Sanford and their yearly 'catch'. I talk about one of New Zealand's best run companies, Mainfreight and finally I talk about the Berkshire Hathaway of New Zealand - Infratil. I also do a shout out at the start of the episode for podcast sponsors. In my view the idea sponsor will be any company that is involved in the financial markets but would also suit many other businesses - maybe you have a construction company or perhaps small hotel or a brand of some sort. Another full episode of the podcast. In episode 15 we talk about Trustpower and their update, we talk Spark Sport and shots fired over the bow of Sky TV, we talk Orion Healthcare and yes, we get to the Pushpay update. Also, keep an ear out for Monday when I release a bonus episode of my conversation with Craig Herbison, the CEO of Plexure. Episode 14 of the Stock Market Movers podcast discussed the interim update by Z Energy and the impacts on the economy. I analyse and discuss Vista Group, what they do and where I see the valuation in the market. The final company we talk about is a micro-cap called Plexure who enjoyed a fantastic update during the week, I dive into that and raise some signs of caution for investors. The podcast now has a website where you can listen to and follow the podcast, go to www.stockmarketmovers.co.nz - I get asked all the time what books I would recommend for investors so I have put my top 10 favourite investing books on the website. You can read my short review of the book and buy by clicking on the link. This week on the podcast I quickly review "The Essays of Warren Buffett" by Lawrence Cunningham.
