This week on the Story Addict podcast I'm chatting about The Dinner List, by Rebecca Serle - an enjoyable, light contemporary novel involving living and dead people at a dinner party while the host tries to work through her issues with her ex-boyfriend and estranged father. All helped along by Audrey Hepburn, of course. Plus I'm having myself a bit of a whinge about not being able to find any series I really want to watch on Netflix, and I list all of my favourite Netflix series that I'm desperate for new seasons of! And in Speculating on Speculative Fiction I'll introduce you to The Ship, by Antonia Honeywell - a post-apocalyptic dystopian fiction where 498 people hop aboard a ship to escaping the rising waters. To go... where? That is the question.
In this episode of Story Addict with Rebecca Bowyer, hear about Holly Wainwright's rollicking good fun new book, How to Be Perfect. Two bloggers and a brand new mum discover the pitfalls of trying to be somebody else's version of your best self. PLUS All Among the Barley is a gorgeously written new historical fiction novel set in 1930s rural England. It's a slow burn of a book with some deeply relevant messages for us today. AND in Speculating on Speculative Fiction this week we're travelling back to 2003 to revisit The Time Traveller's Wife. Plus the bonus question everyone seems to be asking - have our kids forgotten how to read 'properly'?
In this episode of Story Addict I'm talking about Clementine Ford's upcoming book, Boys Will Be Boys, as well as my thoughts on her first book, Fight Like A Girl. I'll also tell you about a new release historical fiction, Sold on a Monday, based on the true Depression-era photograph of two children with a 'For Sale' sign next to them. Each week in Season 1 I'll be bringing you one of my favourite speculative fiction books. For anyone not familiar with the term, I also explain what it is in this episode! And for Speculating on Speculative Fiction this week, I've chosen the entire Sookie Stackhouse series, which you may know better as the True Blood HBO series. It's funny, irreverent, includes plenty of vampires and is set in small-town Louisiana, the deep south of the U.S.A. Perfect for lovers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer who are all grown up. I also give a shout-out to one of my favourite charities, Share the Dignity. They're doing amazing work in Australia to end period poverty. Each year I support their #itsinthebag drive to help homeless women and girls around Australia have a brighter Christmas by giving them their very own handbag packed with life's little luxuries. Find out more on the Share the Dignity website.
Story Addict is your fix of the best new books, T.V. and film, with host Rebecca Bowyer. Meet Rebecca in this short first episode and find out what it's all about!
