Just Write Your Cray Cray Story Already

I had planned to focus on stories about deep woo and people who are on unique spiritual journeys this year, but it turns out our world has gone cray cray and so have most spiritual communities. In this episode I give an update on the projects I'm doing that are keeping me sane and give a brief book review of Melissa Febos's book Body Work,  about  writing memoirs. While I agree with Febos that the writing process, especially when writing a memoir, is a healing process, I do not agree that the only way for marginalized people to write meaningful memoirs is through the framework of social justice. That's just cray cray. You can find all my books, podcasts, livestreams and blog at pattiluciawrites.com.Thanks for listening.

My Old Friend the Voodoo Priestess: The Real Miss Cleo

I had the rare privilege of getting to know the real "Miss Cleo"   between 2007 - 2013 when we were friends.  One of the most important lessons I learned was how ignorant and intolerant we are in the West  about the spiritual practices of other cultures and parts of the world. Cleo was a voodoo priestess, not a psychic, for starters.  My guest in this podcast is esoteric scholar David Ellis, who adds his wealth of real history and esoteric knowledge to my personal account. It is important to note that as of the date of this podcast there are two separate production companies creating documentaries about the late Miss Cleo. I am working with one of them in the hopes that a truer story, a story with compassion and humanity, will finally be told. In my book Wildflowers and Present Tenses, a memoir and anthology, the story "Coffee with Cleo and Company" recounts the story of our unusual friendship.
