California, September 1975. Within a span of 17 days and less than 90 miles, two women, working separately, tried to assassinate the president of the United States, Gerald R. Ford. These are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate an American president. The first, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, was already infamous as a prominent follower of cult leader Charles Manson. The second, Sara Jane Moore, was a 45 year-old housewife who infiltrated San Francisco's violent radical underground working undercover for the FBI. Driving through northern New Hampshire on a clear fall night in 1961, Betty and Barney Hill spotted a light in the sky that seemed to be following them. As they navigated mountain roads, the light came increasingly closer until the Hills found themselves face to face with a craft unlike any they had seen. Thus began one of the most famous encounters in UFO lore. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
More than two years after their UFO encounter in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Betty and Barney Hill underwent hypnosis therapy with renowned psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon. These sessions revealed that there was more to the Hill's story than they had previously remembered. This story was all the more remarkable because it was so different from the stories of the early years of America's fascination with UFOs - the 1950s. UFO culture of the 1950s revolved around two competing visions; one of contact with advanced beings from within our solar system and another focusing sightings of distant flying objects in the sky. Under hypnosis, the Hills told a story that differed from both of these narratives, one of capture and examination by truly alien beings. While under hypnosis, Betty Hill told of being shown a star map by one of her alien captors. Years later, she sketched what she remembered of the map. This led a teacher named Marjorie Fish to create intricate models of the galaxy to determine the origin of the space craft, and set off a dispute about the accuracy of the map and the reality of their experience. Betty and Barney Hill's memories of being abducted by aliens were recovered through hypnotic regression. But does this technique uncover actual memories, or something else? How does what we know now about memory formation and hypnosis change how we look at the Hills' story of capture aboard an alien craft? Betty Hill had a series of intense dreams after her UFO encounter. How did these dreams inform the memories recovered during hypnosis sessions two years later? They way the Hills described the aliens they met changed over time, becoming less human. Why did the descriptions change and how did they finally arrive at a definitive answer to what these creatures looked like? The Hills described their UFO encounter taking place over several miles, beginning with a bright light in the sky and ending with a craft hovering above a field. Nobody believes they were just making their story up. So what did they see that night as they drove through northern New Hampshire? Betty and Barney Hill's experience established the framework for future tales of alien abduction. But the Hill story was just the jumping off point for abductee narratives that followed. Among the first abduction tales to follow the publication of An Interrupted Journey was Betty Andreasson's alleged kidnapping by friendly, spiritual aliens who took her on a journey to distant worlds; worlds that seemed a reflection of Betty's core beliefs. Three researchers, Budd Hopkins, David Jacobs, and John Mack, revolutionized the study of alien abductions in the 1980s and 90s. Their research, based on hypnotic regression of people they suspected were abductees, suggested that aliens could access anyone, anywhere, at any time. The search for ever-more-incredible stories led to strange theories about the purpose of alien abductions and eventually to the bizarre case of Linda Cortile. Budd Hopkins considered it to be the most compelling abduction case ever investigated. But was it real? The abduction phenomenon has largely faded from public consciousness. What is the current state of abduction research? And looking back to the very beginning of this season, why is it that some people are prone to belief in the paranormal while others are prone to skepticism? Finally, how should we regard abduction stories and other extraordinary claims? I feel sorry for this couple.Something obviously happened to them. This couple's story has been picked to death and will forever be remembered as the abducted couple .Something frightened Barney so badly it traumatized him . it's sad.
why is it that our Goverment, that pay an azz of $$$$$$$ into that most of the time we have no clue what they're using it for..( have you ever tried to read and access what the hell they're talking about??) I needed a dictionary to "access * what I was lookin Fer! danm Sam! I ended up knawing on the corner of my phone.SHEEET! I quit when I broke me store bought teeth in half! The things ain't cheap ya'll know wat I'm talking bout !!
Remember also that there have been so many reports from trained professionals like astronauts, pilots ,policemen, military not just untrained eyes. I've been frustrated all my life about this. I grew up in the shadow of Mt Rainier. There has always been a fringe group of native people, trappers and mountain men& women in the pacific N.W.that could tell you things that would make hair on your neck ,if you have hair there..: ) stand on end.
I've been reading about this couple for a long time.Im 73. I believe them. They're intelligent professionals. They had nothing to gain for this and much to lose in a professional arena. These days there is many things bobbing around in space.Would the Goverment have opened up the Blue Book investigation and kept it open for so long if there wasnt something to it? If the Gov. did invest millions of taxpayers $$$ for squat that screams of fraud.
Spiritual..."spuh rit you uhl"? Love the podcast, but the editor missed that weird pronunciation.
Dodie can't be a trustworthy source who is absolutely telling the truth when he's saying things that conform to your beliefs and then suddenly be still spreading disinformation when he's saying things you don't agree with.
05:12 - "we had..." what sort of weapons?? 😬
Love this show and Toby's delivery. Looking forward to more.

this debunker is garbage, Cherrypicking apart individual aspects of the encounter but failing to see the bigger picture of what happened that night
Use Google Images to find the 1938 Cannon Mountain Tram car. It looks very much like Barney's drawing. The wings were probably the cables. After hearing about this story and wanting to believe it, this is the proof it was not true.
I think the whole concept of abductions is rooted in spiritual beliefs and needs. There are a lot of similarities between profound religious experiences and some of the alien contact stories. The speaker doesn't add any credible evidence to the narrative. She seems to have abandoned one religious belief for another. Have very much enjoyed the podcast 👍
A disappointing end to the season. This woman is a crackpot. Give her another Marlboro and Budweiser. Toby, should have ended the season with the academic.
Love the ship and rowing boat analogy.
Lol. Sarah does realize history goes beyond the internet, right?
Such a good show. Excellent production quality and very well put together. And it's so nice to have a proper, in depth scientific and rational investigation into this. UFO/Paranormal podcasts are so often made from the perspective of credulous "true believers " that swallow any old codswallop. This is a refreshing change.
Evolution isn't proven either. lol
I remember the recovered memory panic...
where is the new episode?????
I do hope that you're going to return at some point to your own experience that you kicked off the podcast with--what do you think really happened?
