Description

Welcome to Strange Country, a podcast devoted to bizarre, surreal and extraordinary stories that make America the weird place it is. Co-hosts Kelly and Beth are former newspaper reporters turned school librarians who have always had a soft spot for a good story--the stranger the better. Discover the first woman to survive a barrel ride over Niagara Falls and the man who invented "complex marriage" in one of the most successful utopian experiments. Things get weird pretty quickly around here.

In 1982, seven people died after taking doses of Extra Strength Tylenol, leading to a full-blown and safety standards for over-the-counter meds. To this day, the murders remain unsolved. Strange Country cohosts Beth and Kelly discuss this 1982 mystery and its possible suspects while Beth mispronounces "business ethics" because that's not really a thing. Hey dear Dash Hounds, we are back this week in a regular kind of way talking about a woman you probably have never heard of—unless you are a folk art phenom like Beth. Learn about a woman and artist whose life may have gone unnoticed except for her self-taught crayon portraits. They go for about $3K on Antiques Roadshow, which is so close to our going rate for Patreon. Inez Nathaniel-Walker's life was not easy, but somewhere, someone with an easier life is looking at her work and likely wondering who was she? Well you have come to the right place. It may seem the government's technique of denigrating the people they kill to make it appear that the killing was justified is a new fun thing in 2026, but we've been here before. It's likely you've never heard of Viola Liuzzo, the only white woman murdered during the Civil Rights Movement. Her name kept popping up on the social media accounts of historians after the murders of Renee Good and Alexi Pretti, trying to tell us all once again to maybe pay attention to the past. In this episode of Strange Country, cohosts Beth and Kelly talk about Liuzzo's life and how J. Edgar Hoover made sure to smear her as a drug-taking, orgy-loving, baby-neglecting mother who deserved being shot in a head by klansmen. "Ask again later" would have been a common response if you had asked your magic eight ball when Strange Country would have a new episode over the last weeks. But now "the outlook is good" because here are cohosts Beth and Kelly together again to talk about the time people spent tons of money to talk to barely trained psychics over the phone lured in by the infomercial featuring the self-proclaimed shaman Miss Cleo. While he may have been called a demagogue and a counterfeit Mussolini, Huey Long had some darn tootin' good ideas—mainly taxing the rich into oblivion. Strange Country cohosts Beth and Kelly talk about Long's rise to populist power in the 1930s and the corruption in its wake, but also how much a 65% tax increase on the rich makes a whole lotta sense. Like Long said "We only propose that, when one man gets more than he and his children and children's children can spend or use in their lifetimes, that then we shall say that such person has his share. In 1964, MIT researcher Joseph Weizenbaum created the first therapy chatbot ELIZA and realized soon after that it sucked and humanity was worse for it. Sixty years later, our new tech gods are like "sex porn bots for all!" Hey Dash Hounds! Remember when that famous person said the thing that the other famous person put on a coffee mug? "The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history?" Well it's true. And if you want another reminder, listen to Beth and Kelly this week as the Strange Country cohosts tell you about the time when Chinese women were wrongfully taken off the streets under The Page Act of 1875, the very first official legislation allowing some guy in charge to unkindly remove people from the country. This story is getting old but we keep it fresh. Thanks for listening. It is an act of love. We all know that women and men are monoliths, right? Women like shoes and the government controlling their bodies; men like muscled-up NFTs of Donald Trump and bench-pressing bitcoin. But what if people aren't on this straight black-and-white binary? Candy Darling, born James Slattery, defied societal expectations and chose to live her life as a superstar along the lines of her favorite actor Kim Novak. Darling was one of Andy Warhol's last "superstars," until her untimely death from cancer at the age of 29 in 1974. Strange Country cohosts Beth and Kelly discuss how Darling straddled two very different worlds; one where she hobnobbed in Warhol's inner circle and one where she relied on friends and acquaintances' couches because she had no money. Charlotte Osborne Mason was one of the biggest benefactors of the Harlem Renaissance but her patronage came with a cost. While she gave noted luminaries Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston monthly stipends to make art, she wanted a say in what the art would be in order to realize her vision: a flaming bridge to connect America to Africa. We love our trials of the century here at Strange Country and this one is a doozy. It's likely one you've never heard of: Rhinelander v Rhinelander. See a young aristocrat married a domestic worker and everyone went all "heavens to betsy" about it, but what made it bring out the worst in people was that the working class bride was biracial. This was in 1924 before the country accepted interracial marriage and the KKK was on the resurgence—or what we could now call the present time. Does it make you feel better to know that America has always been populated by horrible people determined to ostracize others and destroy our democratic principles? Probably not. But it's true. The ghouls we see today are repeating the things that ghouls of the past once said. With the on-again, off-again tariffs and total economic sh*tstorm, one wonders why anyone ever thought Donald Trump had any economic sense. Smile, you're listening to a podcast about Candid Camera. Created by Allen Funt, Candid Camera was America's first prank reality show. Well Dash Hounds, if you are still out there listening and tuning in, we are thankful. Listening is an act of love. Love brings joy, and joy is a form of resistance. So sit back this week and learn how Kelly and Beth are getting through the hard times naturally. Of course with everything that seems good, be cautious. Nature is such a healer until it isn't. And it's just you and your houseplant whose picking up on your negative vibes and blaming you for everything. Confused? So are we. Theme music: Big White Lie by A Cast of Thousands. I still love this song ! I've been gone for a long time. I was ill. It drug me down terribly. I listened from ep. 2. Have to be honest ladies. Kelly made me crazy ,interrupting constantly. Beth did such a wonderful job researching, doing the deep dive, bringing so much to podcast while Kelly seemed to sit back going off topic, asking questions that had nothing to do with with topic. I wondered why Kelly didn't talk to Beth b4 podcast so she could get the personal questions taken care of b4 podcast

this podcast was a trip !! I started from day one. granted I was used to the more professional show where everything was set up with a flow. with these two ladies it was willy nilly. lol. when Beth, was doing dialog. you could feel Kelly squirming in her chair to be heard.shes so funny.. she's gonna burst if she can't put her piece in.Whats a trip is that Beth does 95% of research..reading..scripth work up. I know Beth has to be wore out. come on Kelljy.. you're so funny ..we love ya p

Why on earth would someone be so desperate for attention to do that? Gives me chills. Thank you girls for your crazy ,fun ,wonderful 👍 podcast ! I hope these men burn in hell for ruining these girls and boys lives . I can't imagine what damage those men did to these children's view of the world. I would love for Jeffries to be put in Gen Pop. Woooeee, what the men would do to this pedophile. Being molested and abused as a child shows up later in anger and aggression.

Does anyone else find it hysterical when it's Kelly's turn to do the broadcast ,she gets so frustrated when Beth add's her comments or asks questions during Kelly's reading her notes?? On one podcast,I timed how often Kelly interrupts or goes off topic. I think she was bored bc she could only go 45 seconds without going off topic. Kelly is a trip! I love these ladies!!!

Sex with birds!!!??? I thot I'd heard all the atrocious things a human can do to defenseless animals. This takes the cake. I think there's something wrong with men and sex.Do they think everything on earth is here to stick their penis into just to satisfy their urge? I realize that there are women that do crazy things concerning sex but the statistics show that women are far less likely to kidnap someone, chain them to a bed to rape, beat, torture kill then kidnap another,or rape babies, small children or even torture and kill animals.

I can't get anything delivered and I have to drive 20 miles to get a variety of restaurants" which are McD's,, Taco bell,& KFC. 🙄 The closest Whole Food or famers market is 75 miles. BUT.... no crime, home is paid for, life is sooo much cheaper, taxes are low,we all wave at each other. I can live with it.❤️🌍

are you telling me that Kelly has the script yet still interrupts Beth every 6 sec.'s with questions that literally are answered within the next paragraph but still runs off on tangents about things that have nothing to do with the subject for 10 mins. lmao nice recovery on the cat distraction! Is there going to be any shows in the future where the subject will stick with Beth's scripts? How bout Kelly doing the script and Beth interrupting with a different tangent every 6 sec?? I would absolutely love to hear that!!!!

I've listened to all the episodes so I'm going thru them again. These women were so ahead of their time.!! I think these women just got tired of giving their bodies to husbands that used them like farm animals ,only to have the husbands have sex with other women. can't blame them there!
