Dairy is something most people eat every day and it’s one of Australia’s most important industries. But let’s get down to basics, do you really know where milk comes from? And because cows eat grass, why isn’t milk green?! And then there’s ice cream, sure it’s delicious, but how is it made, and what kinds of weird and wonderful flavours are there? Well, for all things cows, host, Andrew Daddo is chatting to dairy farmer, Bonnie Ravenhill, who runs Narrikup Farm near Albany in Western Australia. She explains what life is like on a dairy farm, how cows turn grass into milk, and what happens after that. Andrew also gets to talk to ice cream maker, Caroline Simmons, owner of Timboon Fine Ice Cream, down near the 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. She explains what goes into making ice cream and you can bet by the end of this episode you’ll be craving some! The quiz will test your tastebuds and your memory, so listen to the whole ep and make sure you’re the winner! All buckled up and ready for some dairy goodness? Let's get a mooove on! In this episode, we’re shining a light, on…well… light! Two kinds of light actually; the first is man-made, specifically, lighthouses, which help sailors navigate the rough & dangerous coastline around Australia. Inspired by his visit to Cape Bruny Lighthouse in Southern Tasmania, podcast host Andrew Daddo tells us more about the history of lighthouses, who looked after them and how they managed to light them in the days before there was electricity. Then it’s time for a look at some dazzling natural light, from…algae?! Andrew talks to Dr. Anusuya Willis, a research scientist at the Australian National Algae Culture Collection, at the CSIRO in Hobart, who reveals why at night, certain algae can light up the ocean like a carpet of blue sparkles. It’s through an amazing natural chemical reaction called bioluminescence, which Anusuya explains in more detail. There’s some fascinating history and a few big words you’ll pick up along the way that will come in handy for the quiz at the end of the episode! All buckled up and ready to be illuminated? Great! Did you know that bees are one of the most industrious and important insects on the planet? It’s easy to take these tiny creatures for granted and think that all they do is produce delicious honey, but their role is so much bigger. Podcast host, Andrew Daddo meets Cedar Anderson, a Byron Bay beekeeper who provides amazing insight into the strict roles in bee society, how they produce honey, why some bees dance, and why so many species of animals and plants are alive because of them, Cedar is also the inventor of the Flow Hive – which, unlike traditional bee boxes, allows you to harvest honey without opening the hive and with minimal disturbance to the bees. There’s also a quiz at the end of the episode so remember to listen hard to score the most points. Ok, All buckled up and buzzing to go? Let's fly! How much do you know about our Aussie bushrangers and did you know there were female bushrangers? Ned Kelly's last stand at Glenrowan is probably the most well-known bushranger story but there are a lot more tales to tell, as host Andrew Daddo finds out from his guest Dr Kiera Lindsey, PHD, an award-winning 19th-century historian and History Advocate of South Australia. Dr Lindsey takes us on an incredible journey back in time, beginning with escaped convicts who had arrived during the British settlement of Australia back in 1788 and explaining how bush ranging started, how bushrangers became part of Australian folklore and why they are still talked about today, despite the fact they were, in most cases, dangerous criminals. Listen to some of the less well-known stories, including the bushranger who rode an ostrich! And of course, there's a quiz at the end of the episode to check you were paying attention! So listen extra hard. Ok, are you ready? Giddy up, let's go!
