The Answer Series (or TAS), the best-selling study guide series in South Africa, has been empowering high school learners since 1975.

TAS has now launched the first-ever subject-specific podcasts for teachers in South Africa. It is called Subject Scoop or SS in short.

In the words of TAS CEO, George Eadie, “Our purpose is to impart the gift of confidence.” In this way TAS endeavours to offer support to teachers and to impact positively on education in South Africa.

In each episode of Subject Scoop, expert teachers dig into a specific subject area and what the year holds for that subject. These subject experts unpack what learners are struggling with and how individual teachers can help them on a practical level. It also covers what subject experts experienced in Gr 12 exam marking.

In this episode, George chats to Norman Davies, Head of Science at Pinelands High. Norman has been involved in marking Matric Physics for the past 9 years. He has extensive experience in Science education including running a Science teacher program at UCT. Norman reiterates that Science is very exact, even at school level, so learners have to write with unambiguous meaning at all times. In this episode, George talks to Anne Eadie, founder and visionary behind TAS, and a leading contributor to the evolution of mathematics teaching in Grades 8 to 12 in South Africa. Joining Anne & George is Jenny Campbell who has 30 years of teaching experience. Jenny, author of Maths textbooks, matric marker and currently the internal moderator for Mathematics Paper 1. Jenny has now joined The Answer Series Maths Team. Anne points out that TAS had already begun to make e-books freely available to teachers in January 2020, prior to the pandemic. Jenny reminds learners and teachers that Mathematics is not necessarily about specific concepts but rather about a process of thinking that is required. In this episode George interviews Mariechen Vermeulen, Subject Head at La Rochelle GHS, Paarl. Mariechen has been a Life Sciences teacher since 2012 after graduating Cum Laude at Stellenbosch University. Mariechen co-presents Life Science Telematics lessons for the WCED and is involved in external Matric marking. Mariechen’s experience marking matric papers have taught her that learners often misread questions thus attention really needs to be given to reading skills. In this episode George welcomes Nazlie Mohamed who taught Economics at Herzlia High School for 24 years, lectured at UCT and externally moderated the PGCE courses for Economics and Accounting. She was seconded by the WCED as Curriculum Advisor for Economics and is a seasoned marker for Matric final examinations. Nazlie has been involved full-time at TAS for the past two years. Nazlie emphasises that the most urgent issue to address in Economics is getting the balance right between allocating sufficient teaching time as well as time for the application and testing of the knowledge taught.
