Set aside some time for this doozy of an episode! It could have happened anytime, anywhere. But our guest’s story takes place in Santa Barbara, California from 1980 to 1983. Four short years thatsaw a giant leap forward in the development of West Coast surfing, design, performance and image. It was set off by a rare combination of individuals, innovation and illumination, against a backdrop of some of the best seasons of surf in two decades. Some have called this California’s Halcyon Days. Our Guest Jimmy Metyko, from Houston, Texas, has maintained a multi-faceted, successful career path in fields of photography, art, graphic design, fashion design, brand creation, development and marketing by the application of one simple strategy: staying ahead of the curve. And in some cases, even designing the curve. His recently released book, Shaping Surf History, by Rizzoli Publishing, is out now and it documents a very special time and place in surfing. It is the Stuff of legend and lore. He documents the rise of a quiet and unassuming surfing savant, his mentor and shaper, a sudden arrival of a world Champion and a crew of surfers that would go on to shape the future of surfing. I am of course talking about Tom Curren, Al Merrick, Shaun Tomson and the Santa Barbara surf scene. Jimmy Metyko is our guest on this episode. Nikki Van Dijk was a major threat on the women’s Championship Tour. Her best season on tour was in 2017 where she reached No. 7 on the Leaderboard after claiming her first CT victory at the Cascais Women’s Pro in Portugal. Her style is smooth rail surfing shaped by her years of honing her approach on Phillip Island, a remote little enclave that’s a day trip away from Melbourne, Australia. She inherited her passion and froth for surfing from her surf-crazed dad. In 2012, during her final year of school she raced off to Bali just before final exams to clinch the World Junior Championship and then later joined the Tour in 2014. After years spent with her main sponsor Rip Curl she left them to partner with WALLIEN Wetsuits as an Ambassador where she has gone on to co-create an exclusive collection of high-performance wetsuits with a focus on optimal comfort, style and environmental mindfulness. We were fortunate enough to meet Nikki while she is in NYC for the UN General Assembly NY Climate Week where she was on a panel with former guest of the Show Chris Nelson to discuss the film The Big Sea, the investigative documentary exposing the hidden links to cancer Alley in Louisana and the wetsuit worlds toxic addiction to neoprene. Nikki was here in our studio in Rockefellar Center and we were stoked to welcome her on to our show. On this episode, we are joined with Author, Award Winning Filmmaker, Podcaster and Surf Trip Guru, Laurel Senick. She just completed her first novel, Foam, a surf adventure with a female protagonist, Casasandra Lee who is an out of work journalist whose life is in shambles and runs to Rincon Puerto Rico in hopes of realizing her dreams. It’s when she is researching a free diver’s death, she uncovers a drug ring and kidnapping plot and discovers that this sleepy town has a darker underbelly. It’s a welcome novel that fills a missing genre of women’s fiction and also follows in the tradition of such great writers as Kem Nunn, Tim Winton,Taylor Jenkins, Catherine Steadman and Don Winslow. Laurel is from Wilmington North Carolina but has made her way up North for the Women’s Surf Film festival and I’m stoked to have her on the show. If you live with the myths in your mind, you will find yourself always in mythological situations. They cover everything that can happen to you. And that enables you to interpret the myth in relation to life, as well as life in relation to myth. - Joseph CampbellOur guest is former pro surfer, writer, rescue and relief activist, Matt George. He is someone who helped to create and build the myths that make up surf history. For our guest, surfing became more than a sport. It became a world unto itself. A religion. A quest. An odyssey full of fables, tall tales and more..His profile pieces elevated the standard surf magazine profile. He was not afraid to be critical. He would dive deep to get to know his subjects, spending days attached to their hips. He may not have always wrote what the surfers wanted but, he was fair and gave us, the readers an honest view into who these surfers were as people. His commitment to surfing is something to be admired. In a world where there is so much cynicism, his earnestness and blind faith in surfing as something more than just a sport or hobby, is refreshing and inspiring. Matt has just released a compilation of his writings in the book titled “In Deep” published by Di Angelo Publications. Matt has touted this book as an antidote to the synthetic image of surfing that is being promoted today. It’s a fun read that really captures the times they were written in but, I would also dare say, they could be something of an inspiration for younger surfers to explore the world around them. Our Guest is a trailblazer in the surfing world. On March 2022, Sasha Jane Lowerson placed ninth in the Noosa Festival of Surfing, becoming the first trans woman to compete in surfing at the professional level. Two months later, she placed first in the Open Women's and Women's Logger divisions at the Western Australian State Titles. This win garnered her a lot of attention and has provoked the surfing world to have the conversation about the inclusion of trans athletes in the world of professional surfing. On February 3 of this year, the World Surf League (WSL) announced a new policy allowing trans women to compete in its women’s category if they prove their testosterone levels fall within a defined range. While this announcement was originally released somewhat quietly, the following days Bethany Hamilton then went to social media to protest this decision and boycott all WSL events. On Swell Season, we tried to have a thoughtful conversation with our friends at Benny’s Club and try to sift through the mountain of misinformation that is out there. Our conversation inevitably drifted towards Sasha and all the incredible work she has done. The conversation got her attention and we wanted to allow her to speak on her behalf and also get to know her more. Sasha is our guest on this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast. For Rockaway residents, many of your are very familiar with our guest, a longtime Rockaway resident and an OG documentarian of the people in this community. You can sometimes find her surfing off the jetties uptown at beaches we will not mention. Our guest is none other than amazingly talented Susannah Ray! Her work on long form documentary projects, such as Right Coast, A Further Shore and What are The Wild Waves Saying, explore the relationship of people and landscape and how public space offers opportunities for escape, leisure, and transcendence. Many of her projects have occurred at the intersection of city and water, describing how New Yorkers' lives are shaped by the waters that surround the city. Her latest body of work, Down for the Day, is now showing at the Baxter Street Camera Club of New York. The exhibit gives us an intimate look at the life of beachgoers, specifically people who have made their way to Rockaway Beach. It’s a beautiful composition of the people of diverse backgrounds who make up this great city. I would dare call this a love letter to Rockaway and the magic it holds for New Yorkers. Beachgrit is notorious for their tabloid style content and click bait titles. Some more controversial than others but, always interesting to read. We started to notice about a year ago some articles coming out, covering the New York / Mid Atlantic Surf Scene. Our humble and sometimes forgotten-about community was getting some storylines and coverage in one of the most sensational surf tabloids. Behind each of these articles was the name Giancarlo Guardascione. We became curious as to who was this Giancarlo that was reporting on our community in Beachgrit and what was his backstory. His articles are well crafted, some with a bit of tongue and cheek, some with sincere earnestness and all well researched and reported. We are really excited to have Giancarlo on our show to learn about his surfing story and get some of his hot takes on surfing in the Mid Atlantic. We hope you enjoy this episode with this absolutely charasmatic character. Listeners… Have you ever hand shaped a surfboard? Have you ever had the desire to try and mow foam with a planer and ride something you made? Or make a board that you might have seen but don’t have access to? Shea Somma is a shaper out of the central coast of California who started hand shaping boards in 2008, out of the curiosity to try new designs and shapes that weren’t as available to him at the time. He began in his backyard shed with a desire to create and sample many niche board designs from the obscure corners of surfing. He’s been chasing the unique sensations one feels from riding these alternative designs ever since. Shea is here in New York doing a short residency at the Kings Glassing Facility in Brooklyn and he is our guest on this episode of The Swell Season Surf Podcast. Gina Jurlando used to joke about the group of women she surfed with calling themselves Yeasty Boys. What was initially a silly way to describe her surf crew, has expanded into a group of surfers of all levels, genders, backgrounds, and towns who want to learn, want to teach, or just want a buddy to paddle out with.Yeasty Boys was founded in 2021 after learning of how many femme folks were hesitant to learn to surf or paddle out for fear of getting in the way of the male-dominated lineup. Yeasty Boys is a social club with a focus on community service. When they're not in the water, they’re cooking up ways to help out their neighbors and keep our oceans clean. Our guest today is a founder of the Yeast Boys, Gina Jurlando. She has been surfing for her entire life. She learned to surf when she was about 7 years old, being pushed into waves on a 10ft water logged longboard from the 1970s by her dad. Her whole family are water men and women and she comes from a long line of fishermen, boat captains, and most importantly- surfers! Gina founded the Yeasty Boys in 2021 when she realized how many other surfers felt the hesitation to paddle out due to a lack of skills or a support system. What started as a joke has turned into an ever-growing group of people who want to help each other grow and progress, no matter what their skill level. She is our guest on this episode of The Swell Season Surf Podcast. For more information you can follow @yeastyboysrbny on Instagram or go to https://www.yeastyboysrbny.com The Swell Season Podcast is recorded by The NewsStand Studio at Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan and is distributed by The Swell Season Surf Radio Network. www.swellseasonsurfradio.comMusic: Song: No Sleep til Brook StreetArtist: Surf AddictsAlbum: Party in LagunaBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/swell-season--3483504/support.
