Theology of Rest

Theology of Rest

2025-08-2949:32

Many of us know we need to rest but aren’t sure how to adopt a rhythm of rest that reflects biblical teaching. In this conversation from TGCW24, Amy Gannett and Gretchen Saffles discuss how a right view of God shapes the way we view ourselves to better receive the rest he supplies. They unpack a biblical theology of rest by tracing the overarching theme from Genesis to Revelation, seeking to apply God’s unchanging truth to our everyday lives.
Don Carson discusses the concept of flexibility in gospel proclamation based on 1 Corinthians 9:19-23. He explains how Paul adapted his message to different audiences, emphasizing the need to win people to Christ without compromising the gospel. Carson considers John Travis's "C1 to C6 spectrum" of Christ-centered communities in light of Paul's message, and highlights the importance of flexibility in evangelism while maintaining the integrity of the gospel message.
Whether it’s a public scandal captured in the headlines or a private offense held closely in our hearts, many of us have been hurt by others in the church. In this panel discussion from TGC’s 2024 Women’s Conference, Winfree Brisley, Karen Hodge, Ruth Chou Simons, and Irene Sun explore various kinds of church hurt and offer gospel-centered guidance for navigating them both practically and spiritually. They share personal stories, emphasize prayer, humility, and accountability, and remind us why the church—despite its brokenness—is still worth loving as the body of Christ, full of hope and healing.
Are you the wife of a pastor, elder, or seminary student? We want you to know you’re not alone in this unique calling. In this episode from TGC’s 2024 Women’s Conference, Kristie Anyabwile, Christine Hoover, Glenna Marshall, and Kristen Wetherell share an encouraging conversation about loving Jesus and his church, supporting our husbands, and enduring faithfully in ministry. They discuss cultivating a personal walk with Christ, building authentic friendships, navigating marriage and parenting in the spotlight, and embracing Sabbath rest to guard against burnout—offering ministry wives biblical wisdom and hope for the road ahead.
Loving others and communicating respectfully across differences isn’t easy—sometimes it’s not even something we want to do. It’s far more comfortable to stay in circles of sameness than to engage those with different beliefs, backgrounds, and perspectives. In this breakout session from TGC’s 2024 Women’s Conference, Vanessa Hawkins explains how growing in cross-cultural competence is not just helpful for communication—it’s a key part of our spiritual formation as disciples of Christ.
In this keynote from TGC’s 2009 National Conference, Ligon Duncan urges pastors to recover the centrality of the pastoral epistles—1 and 2 Timothy and Titus—as foundational guides for faithful life and ministry. He critiques two persistent errors in the Western church: theological liberalism, which changes the message to suit culture, and methodology divorced from theology, which compromises ministry effectiveness. Drawing from 2 Timothy 4, Duncan exhorts pastors to endure, study diligently, build gospel community, and finish the race with faithfulness rooted in God’s grace and presence.
In this keynote from TGC’s 2009 National Conference, K. Edward Copeland examines 2 Timothy 3:1–9 to address the dangers of self-centeredness, superficial godliness, and a diluted gospel in the last days. He warns that misdirected love—where people prioritize themselves over God—will infiltrate even the church, leading to a form of religion that lacks true power. Copeland calls pastors to reject performance-based ministry and instead faithfully proclaim the truth of the gospel through the power of the Holy Spirit.
In this keynote from TGC’s 2009 National Conference, Philip Ryken opens 2 Timothy to remind pastors that faithful ministry flows from the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. With encouragement from Paul’s example and the courage of Onesiphorus, Ryken calls ministers to hold fast to sound doctrine, endure criticism, and entrust the gospel to others. He urges weary pastors to find strength in Christ’s resurrection and assurance in God’s unwavering faithfulness—even when their own faith feels weak.
In this keynote message from TGC’s 2009 National Conference, John Piper unpacks 2 Timothy 1:1–12 with a powerful call to “fan into flame” the gift of God, urging believers to live with courage, love, and self-control. He highlights the role of grace and the Word in strengthening us to speak and suffer for the gospel without fear or shame. Drawing from Paul’s example and Timothy’s sincere faith, Piper encourages pastors to feed the flame of God’s calling through deep dependence on God’s power and purpose.
How can joy be possible—always, right where you are?In this breakout session from TGC’s 2024 Women’s Conference, Ann Voskamp shares how cultivating gratitude is one of the most important ways to prepare for whatever life may hold. Even when we don’t know what’s coming, we can learn to give thanks daily—not because of how we feel, but because of who God is. Voskamp offers practical tools to help you recognize grace in the ordinary, live abundantly, and become more present to God in a way that leads to lasting joy.
Military families face unique challenges—and unique opportunities for gospel mission. In this breakout from TGC's 2024 Women's Conference, Hunter Beless and Megan Brown share from their own experiences as military wives, offering insight into the needs of this often-overlooked community. Whether you're in the military or ministering near a base, this conversation will help you learn how the local church can come alongside military families to support them and partner in fulfilling the Great Commission around the world.
Christian women sometimes feel conflicted about work. Is work an aspect of what it means to be made in God’s image? Does work conflict with family responsibilities? How do we work in a way that’s aligned with God’s mission, becoming good stewards of our working hours? In this breakout session from TGC's 2024 Women's Conference, Tina Boesch, Missie Branch, and Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt grapple with questions like these in a conversation enlivened by real-life experience and illuminated by Scripture.
In his message at TGC's 2009 national conference, Tim Keller introduces gospel ministry through the lens of 2 Timothy, highlighting the critical but often implicit task of confronting idols.Drawing from Acts 19 and Paul’s example, Keller shows how gospel preaching challenges both personal and cultural idols—ranging from money and family to truth and morality—by disrupting the systems built around them. He emphasizes that only the gospel has the power to expose, confront, and ultimately destroy these idols, and he urges pastors and ministry leaders to apply its truth for genuine transformation.
In his keynote message from TGC25, David Platt unpacks Ephesians 6:10–20, urging believers to recognize the reality and intensity of spiritual warfare and highlighting how Satan attacks our emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. He exhorts the church to stand firm by putting on the full armor of God—truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer—and emphasizes that our strength comes not from ourselves but from Christ’s resurrection power at work in us.Platt closes with a call to pray fervently for others, worship boldly, and press forward in gospel mission, grounded in spiritual intimacy with Jesus.
In this keynote message from TGC25, Alistair Begg unpacks Ephesians 3:1–13, showing how Paul’s suffering and calling reveal the mystery of Christ—that the church is God’s new, unified, multicultural people. Begg contrasts the world’s longing for peace with God’s eternal plan to unite all things in Christ, making the church a powerful display of his wisdom. Begg urges listeners to reject isolation and individualism and instead embrace the beauty of the gospel, the church's purpose, and the hope of glory through Christ.
In this keynote message from TGC25, John Piper walks through Ephesians 1:3–14, unfolding its sweeping vision of God's purpose to unite all things in Christ and to display the glory of his grace. Piper emphasizes that salvation is entirely the work of God—free, unconditional, and accomplished through Christ—calling believers to marvel at grace that was planned before creation. Piper urges listeners to seek Spirit-given insight and affection for God's grace, making heartfelt praise the central aim of their lives.

In this breakout session from TGCW24, Michael Kruger makes a compelling case for the essential role of women in ministry—not as optional or merely permitted, but as vital by God’s design. Drawing from theological, biblical, and historical perspectives, he highlights women’s significant contributions throughout Scripture and early Christianity, urging the church to embrace both spiritual fathers and mothers and encouraging women to step into their ministry callings.
In this keynote address from TGC's 2007 inaugural conference, Crawford Loritts explores the urgency of passing faith from one generation to the next, ensuring a deep passion for God’s character and the truth of Scripture.Reflecting on Psalm 78, he highlights the power of mentorship, the importance of balancing cultural engagement with divine truth, and the lasting influence of a strong spiritual legacy. Loritts challenges ministers to faithfulness in their personal obedience, doctrinal precision, and ministry practices so they can pass on the torch to future generations.

I wish more people would call out false teachers like he did. it's not your creating us and them mentality, it's to protect people being led astray by them.

Thank you for your insightful discussion today. This is indeed a messy situation for the church to be in and we need to be more vocal about these errant preaching methods. The world thinks that it has no need for the (g)ospel but that is because, for too long, it has been shown such a diluted version of the faith found in real Christianity. The world needs the REAL Gospel and those who are part of it to stand up and be heard. Stand up and be heard. For the sake of those who are being deceived by these false teachers.
