Description

My name is Gage Clift, I make stuff when I'm in my creative and necrotic goldilocks zone (movies, mostly). This podcast is a way for me to talk about all the random, juxtaposed things I find fascinating: deep film discussions, the creative mind, my stupid jokes. We won't put this thing into a box. Hope you enjoy!

I also touch on the last year in my life and what I've learned and gained (as a person and a filmmaker). Plus, I'm talking the new Netflix film by Adam McKay "Don't Look Up" and what I thought about it. Spoiler: it's what you'd expect. Thanks for watching! Please enjoy Episode 010 of THE CLiFT PODCAST! Today, I'm discussing film criticism at length, and answer the question: Has filmmaking affected the way I critique movies? I express my thoughts on those who hate every film they see, and those who love every one, and what the balance looks like. I also talk new films I've seen, including "No Time To Die" and "Ramekins". And I talk about my stupid life too. Support the podcast on Patreon and get the show early! Questions in the comments are answered in the next episode! Please enjoy Episode 009 of THE CLiFT PODCAST! Today I catch-up on some movies from the previous month of November, as I attempt to actually enjoy something that was released in 2021, which I have so far deemed a depressing year in film. I talk about Jim Cummings' new film "The Beta Test", "Antlers" and "The French Dispatch"! But did I like them? I also talk about poop for nearly 45 minutes, and the second trailer for "Spider-Man: No Way Home". Support the podcast on Patreon and get the show early! Please enjoy Episode 008 of THE CLiFT PODCAST! Today, I'm joined by special guest Sydnee Averill, my fiancé, and fellow "Dexter" lover, to discuss the entirety of this once eight-season long series and its ups-and-downs. We will be ranking the show from worst to best and discussing our favorite aspects and moments and ideas and characters and so on! Such a fun talk! We also make predictions for the new season "Dexter: New Blood"! Thanks for watching!  Support the podcast on Patreon and get the show early! Please enjoy Episode 007 of THE CLiFT PODCAST! Today, I'm discussing the new Netflix series "Squid Game" aka what everyone is currently talking about. Did I enjoy this series as a contrarian piece of sh*t? Maybe. Watch to find out. Is the show political, or merely making an observation about human nature? We'll talk about it. Also, I give my thoughts on some newly released films and trailers. "Halloween Kills" and "Theo Von: Regular People" are mentioned, as well as trailers for "The Batman" and "Uncharted". Please enjoy Episode 006 of THE CLiFT PODCAST! Today, I discuss stand-up comedy following the release of Dave Chappelle's new Netflix special "The Closer" and the so-called controversy that has sparked because of it. I also talk about my recent experience seeing Louis C.K. live, and his upcoming comedy special apparently called "Sorry". And, of course, we'll touch a bit on cancel culture, but hopefully in a more unique and interesting way than is typical. Support the podcast on Patreon and get the show early! Please enjoy Episode 005 of THE CLiFT PODCAST! Today, I discuss a serious issue plaguing my favorite film app: Letterboxd, and how The Movie Database is slowly ruining the platform with their arbitrary guidelines and rules that keep and remove all real independent filmmakers from both websites. I believe it's very important that all filmmakers be aware of this growing problem. So let's keep the discussion going! Support the podcast on Patreon and get the show early! On this episode, I talk with my Grandpa! We discuss a number of diverse topics like Star Trek, UFO's, Religion and so on, but we zero in on a conversation about old Hollywood and how it compares to the new. He shares his thoughts on classic movie stars such as Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, and if he thinks there will ever be actors with that level of staying power again in the future. We talk about Norm Macdonald following his recent passing, and how his comedy had an impact and where we think comedy is heading in modern times. It was good talk! I'm so happy to have done a podcast with him finally, and I expect to do many more going forward! Please enjoy! Support the podcast on Patreon and get the show early! Today, I talk again with my good friend Zach Sagen, who was most recently on the podcast, where we talked lots about evil and evil portrayed in art and filmmaking. We particularly focused in on the controversial film "Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom". But this time we'll be having a conversation through a more historical lens. Is fact stranger than fiction? Think of this episode as a spiritual sequel to the last. We'll be discussing historical atrocities and specific films/books that have explored these horrific events in time. Think films like "Come And See" for instance. Additionally, events like the terror that occurred in the Nanking Massacre of 1937 became an important factor in the themes of this episode. This is a darker conversation, that's for sure. But a necessary one. History is complex. Art is complex. Humans are complex. We don't have the answers, because nothing is that simple. But we'll surely ask the questions. Please enjoy! Support the podcast on Patreon and get the show early! Questions in the comments are answered in the next episode! Zach Sagen is a friend and a creative, thoughtful and intelligent filmmaker. He is always one I go to for deep conversations, specifically discussions involving things such as history or films that require endless analysis. I believe "Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom" (1975) directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini is an example of the latter. This is an extremely controversial film known as one of the more disturbing films ever made. We discuss some of the film's implications and what it takes as a filmmaker or artist to make something so truly horrible, and how one goes about exploring such evil in the world. Is a certain amount of darkness required in a person's soul in order to face such things? We also bring up comic books films quite often throughout the discussion, where we explore the themes in DC's recent movie "Joker" and so on. This is a deep conversation about deep conversations, in a lot of ways. Please enjoy! Support the podcast on Patreon and get the show early! Kyle Roy is a filmmaker and a friend. He co-hosted "The Dialogue Podcast" earlier this year, a podcast that recently came to an abrupt end. Today on THE CLiFT PODCAST, we discuss the ending of the podcast, as well as takeaways and lessons learned. We also go deep on ways of finding creative balance as a filmmaker, and things we do to obtain short term creative gratification while staying on the path of our primary goals and long term projects. If you're a filmmaker or are thinking of starting a podcast of your own, this could be of interest to you. Please enjoy! Support the podcast on Patreon and get the show early!
