Some tidbits: 1. Uber is partnering with municipalities to increase transit capacity when demand density is low. 2. It is a cost effective model for municipalities since cost is flexible and dependent on the number of rides and usage; contrary to public transit where costs are fixed and on a per hour basis. 3. The partnership can also help businesses with transportation issues and be subsidized by government. 4. Safety functionalities are being integrated on the app for those wary of safety issues with Uber. 5. The partnership also allows Uber to redirect passengers to transit facilities; Uber noticed that demand is price sensitive and drops when fares are north of $20. 6. Public transit is ineffective when it comes to the last mile and to low density areas, solutions will need to be more personalized and that's where Uber can step in. FDI and BRE are looking to join their functions; based on our knowledge of the gaps faced by local businesses, FDI should collaborate with BRE team to bring in companies that would support local businesses in their supply chain gaps. 2. Business continuity plans are supper important. Your businesses should have a plan, and your community should understand the weak points of those businesses so that in an emergency, the right support is immediately made available. 3. Smaller communities should look at forging regional partnerships. Leverage your strengths and make yourself heard through regional partnerships. 4. Information sharing: it is crucial that information is shared transparently between the different stakeholders in a community and between regions. Google for examples makes it a point to collaborate with smaller businesses to foster innovation through a culture of information sharing. 5. Larger firms end up leaving the community in case of a disaster but not smaller ones. SME's have strong links to the community. 6. SME's could prevent overwhelming closure if they have a business continuity plan in place; a plan that big businesses already have. 7. Digital supply chain requires a robust cyber security infrastructure. 8. Map your community and understand the businesses who are at the highest risk of closure. Communities should move upstream and target high school students; preparing high school students early on and aligning them to industry is important - If they show their value and commitment to companies while in school, they might convince them to pay for their university tuition. 2. Micro credentials are booming; the importance is the accreditation and ensuring that it serves industry. Micro credentials are low cost, relevant and quick to adapt. 3. Make sure to penetrate the K-12 program and get industry involved with schools; faculty and curriculum should be nimble enough to adapt to industry. 4. Apprenticeship programs train and pay at the same time, they educate, ensure employment and also pay; can't get better than that. Apprenticeships are not only in manufacturing but also involved in R&D training --> Biotech. 5. There is a major issue with post-secondary institutions; they do not prepare students sufficiently for the workforce, they're expensive and time consuming. Change is imminent. 6. No Product, No Project: You cannot sell from an empty wagon; so make sure your community has identifiable assets to attract business investment. 2. Leadership & Courage are the two key component portrayed by successful economic developers. 3. EcDev success is also characterized by successful private + public partnerships --> economic developers have a responsibility to educate policy makers and elected officials. 4. Labor force readiness & technical schools are two component of EcDev that have taken on a substantial level of importance in the along the years. 5. Community college and technical schools have an upper hand to traditional research institutions because their curriculum adapts quicker to industry needs. 6. EcDev & Site Selection is a relationships business; technology (virtual site visits) have served to shorten in-person visit times. 7. USMCA has leveled the playing field but key considerations regarding manufacturing costs still exists. Countries should focus on their strengths and bring forward a value prop. on target markets. 8. Near shoring or reshoring is not obvious. Cost considerations still carry a heavy weight. If companies decide to repatriate supply chains to North America, they will probably move to Mexico. 9. Talent is the new currency --> build you talent pipeline; apprenticeship programs (German model) is effective. Community college's occupational training programs are also very effective. 10.
