WEMBY GETS SPUR'D

The day has come and gone and we now know that Victor Wembenyama will most likely be drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, and then the journey starts.  What I have been thinking a lot as of late, is the media’s role in myth building, in creating a narrative to feed the 24 Hour Sports News cycle with soundbyte after soundbyte, and different nuanced takes on the same topic, so Stephen A Smith can talk about Lebron James four hundred times throughout the course of one week of shows. There is no one better at myth building than ESPN personality Brian Windhurst.  A former beat writer for the Cleveland Caviliers, it appeared for many years that Brian Windhurst was the Lebron whisperer, breaking stories out of Cleveland, as Lebron James became a mega superstar. Windhurst a very talented journalist and savvy operator for lack of a better term rode the coattails of Lebron into an NBA Insider and media superstar, where his knowledge and expertise is pursued across the league, and defintely on ESPN. This past week in following the Wemby news, I wasn’t surprised to see a very long think piece written by Windhurst on Wemby, the byline was from Paris France, where Windhurst had traveled to for 24 hours to get a byte from Wemby after the draft lottery. CHRIS HERREN

Under the premise of The Propsect, while there are many stories of epic success, and dedication that required super human work ethic, focus, luck and foresight, there are also stories of different paths, that NBA superstar prospects took to the NCAA and the NBA, some of these stories stand out to me, because growing up they were some of my favorite players, this week I wanted to look at the story of Chris Herren, from Fall River Massachusetts. Herren is a former professional basketball player who once played for the NBA's Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics. Despite a successful basketball career, Herren's life became derailed by drugs and alcohol abuse and he eventually lost everything, including his family and his career. THE GLIDER

The evolution of basketball scouting these days, has morphed into Instagram highlight reels, and deals for  high school basketball players where some of them are becoming millionaires by the time they turn 18 years old, for Viktor Wembanyama as the next great hope of the NBA, his path was vastly different from say Michael Jordan, or Lebron, or Steph Curry. In thinking about the philosophy of scouting, the essence of scouting, what comes to mind for me, is a legendary story about a man they called THE GLIDER. Learn more about your ad choices. MONDAY NIGHT MEMORIES

At the end of the Men’s College Basketball National Championship, Jim Nantz of CBS a broadcaster who has called 32 Final Fours, signed off with a small quote, that caught my attention for many reasons, Jim said, “Everyone has a story, and everyone has a dream." Those words this year and the run that UCONN had inside the tournament, took on extra meaning for me this time of year. While I have faithfully watched the NCCA Tournamant since I was eight years old, the Monday night of the Championship game has been my only religion, I have yet to miss that game, no matter where I have been. With UCONN’s run thru the tournament, and their televisied games, what they also provided for me was a topic of conversation with my Mother who is battling Alzheimers’s and attened UCONN, wherein she met my father, and they have been married since.  While the disease ravages her short term memory, the UCONN’s Men’s basketball games, have turned into a conversation piece that injects some positive emotions, in my daily interactions which at times are painful, sad, introspective, and relevatory. While my Mom’s battle of Alzheimers, has been front and center, another story resonated with me, and that was the public narrative around the Uconn coach Danny Hurley, and his early struggles with mental health, and overcoming walking away for a period of time of the game of basketball altogether. MIKE EVANS

Today on The Propsect, we're do things a little differently. Don Sikorski interviews Mike Evans, the founder of Full Court Peace, an organization that works in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, El Salvador, the Wind River Indian reservation, and other destinations, to rebuild basketball courts, and use the sport to bridge the divide inside and out diverse neighborhoods. It is the use of basketball for the purpose of human rights, connection, and a simple idea — if we can all connect at a human level, then the world might just be a better place. JA MORANT

In creating the prospect, I started to realize that while I am vastly interested in tracking the rise of Wemby, and seeing what happens to a player that has already been anointed, the premise of the Prospect, keeps bringing up memories of all my basketball experiences, have given me the ability to track stories that are adjacent to the Wemby journey that cross-over into my thoughts on the modern day NBA. In the creation of this episode and thinking about Wemby, my memories took me to another touted prospect, who had a unique journey and that is Allen Iverson.   While I was thinking about Iverson this past week, news broke that shifted my thinking in a totally different way……. KYRIE IRVING

In the journey of Victor Wembayama and whether he will become the NBA’s next greatest star or prospect, I stumbled across an article in New York Magazine, that I feel is very relevant to tracking Wemby’s journey. While the NBA news cycle was in overdrive this week, all around the trade of Kevin Durant to Phoenix, and Kyrie Irving to Dallas, I started to think about the larger NBA environment, and where we are at in popular culture as NBA teams look to position themselves in the Wemby lottery, which is why a hit piece on Kyrie Irving was something I wanted to talk about and explore.
