We often hear about fashion and clothing stylists and even food stylists, but every bit as important is the prop stylist. The folks who curate all the finishing touches that give a shot its sense of time and place. Prop stylists are often the real behind the scenes heroes of the amazing images that we see in magazines and advertisements. New York based Robin Zachary is a Prop stylist with experience at all levels of the creative process, from prop styling, to creative direction and even photography. With over 20 years of experience in the advertising capital of the world, I knew that Robin would be the perfect person to speak with to gain insight into the world of collaborating with prop stylists. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Links Website URLs: https://www.robinzachary.com https://www.thepropstylingexperience.com/ Instagram URL: https://www.instagram.com/robinzachary/ Facebook URL: https://www.facebook.com/robinzacharystylist - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://togchat.com Episode Web Page: https://www.joeedelman.com/prop-stylist My Website & Portfolio: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Don't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVE Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube! Wedding Photography. So many new photographers decide to shoot weddings because they think it is a sound money making genre. So many wedding photography businesses fail quickly because said photographers had no idea how much work is actually involved in shooting a wedding and running a wedding business. It takes a special person to not only be good at wedding photography, but also to be able to make it a full-time business that supports a family of 4. This was not the case for my guest Mr. Joseph Ellis. Along with his wife Stephanie, Joseph has shot over 800 weddings in the last 20 years after transitioning to weddings from his early career as a photojournalist. Together, the couple owns and operates Big Wall Family Photography studio in Dallas, Texas.  Joseph shared some great advice for new wedding photographers and lots of details about how he works with wedding couples and the gear he uses. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Links Website URLs: http://www.josephmark.com  http://www.bigwallstudio.com http://www.familyphotolife.com Instagram URL: https://www.instagram.com/josephmarkphoto/ Facebook URL: https://www.facebook.com/josephmarkphoto YouTube URL: http://www.youtube.com/josephellisphotographer - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://togchat.com Episode Web Page: https://www.joeedelman.com/joseph-ellis My Website & Portfolio: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Don't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVE Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube! I had a great conversation this week with Mr. Marc Silber. Marc is a life-long photographer, best-selling author three times over, filmmaker and host of the Advancing Your Photography YouTube series. Marc started out learning darkroom skills and the basics of photography at the legendary Peninsula School in Menlo Park, CA, in the '60s. If you are not familiar with the Peninsula School, they are renowned for their no-grade approach to education and support of student collaboration, positive risk-taking, and creativity. Marc moved on to hone his skills to professional standards at the famed San Francisco Art Institute and has since moved into teaching photography in workshops all over the country. One of the things I admire most about Marc is his dedication to education. Not just sharing his knowledge and experience, but his own continuing education, and you will see in his books, his videos, and even in our conversation, that he has a brilliant quote from an inspirational photographer for almost any situation. But his quotes are not just focused on iconic names like Adams and Leibovitz. He also makes it a point to learn from new photographers. When I booked Marc to be on the podcast, he shared a list of things that he has recently learned from talking to budding photographers, and I thought that would make for a great conversation and provide some excellent teaching opportunities. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Links Website URL: https://www.silberstudios.com/ https://marcsilber.smugmug.com/ Instagram URL: https://www.instagram.com/marcsilber  Facebook URL: https://www.facebook.com/marcosilber YouTube URL: https://www.youtube.com/marcsilber To purchase Marc's book Advancing Your Photography: Secrets to Making Photographs that You and Others Will Love Visit: https://www.advancingyourphotography.com/  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://togchat.com Episode Web Page: https://www.joeedelman.com/marc-silber My Website & Portfolio: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Don't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVE Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube! Who knew? Elopement Photography. I honestly didn't know it was a thing. I learned about this growing niche of wedding photography recently and in my search to find a great elopement photographer to speak with, I found an awesome photographer and entrepreneur — Brianna Parks. Brianna is a 22-year-old California and Pacific Northwest elopement photographer who started a photography business after realizing a 9-5 job wasn't what she wanted to do with her life. After two years of business in the traditional wedding scene, Brianna decided to take the leap and focus exclusively on elopements, or weddings with under 30 guests.  Her passion for her work is contagious and you will learn quite a bit from this young businesswoman — regardless of the genre of photography that you specialize in. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Links Website URL: https://briannaparksphoto.com Instagram URL: https://instagram.com/briannaparksphotography Facebook URL: https://facebook.com/briannaparksphotography - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://togchat.com Episode Web Page: https://www.joeedelman.com/brianna-parks My Website & Portfolio: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Don't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVE Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube! This week, I had an amazing discussion with Vancouver based Erich Saide. Erich Saide is a Commercial, Fitness & Lifestyle, Celebrity and Portrait photographer specializing in producing exceptional, creative and technical images born out of his love of connecting with people.  Forming a relationship with his subjects as soon as possible is paramount to his success, being able to draw out the best in people sets his photography apart from the rest. Photography started as a love for experimenting with light and once he learned a thing or two through his studies, he became a master at manipulating light to compliment the wide variety of projects he has collaborated on over his 20 year career.  Some of his favourite clients include Advertising Agencies, Celebrities, PR Agencies and TV & Movie Productions. Winner of the Communication Arts 58th Photography Annual Competition.  If he isn't out shooting in Gastown, the area around his beautiful work/live studio loft in Vancouver, you might find him walking his dog Bella or taking advantage of the diverse city / mountainscapes that Vancouver has to offer. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Links Website URL https://www.erichsaide.com Instagram URL https://www.instagram.com/erichsaide Twitter URL https://www.twitter.com/erichsaide Founder: Humans Of Support initiative https://www.facebook.com/humansofsupport/ https://www.instagram.com/humansofsupport/ https://www.humansofsupport.org #HumansOfSupport  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://togchat.com Episode Web Page: https://www.joeedelman.com/erich-saide My Website & Portfolio: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Don't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVE Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube! This week, I had an awesome opportunity to chat with the Queen of Personal Branding Photographers - Flor Blake. Flor Blake is a portrait, editorial, and commercial photographer with a style consisting of imaginative, vibrant, and dynamic imagery. She grew up in the Caribbean (the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico) where you are automatically surrounded by color, rawness, vivacity and "flavor", all of these elements greatly influence her work. With a Fashion Designer as a mom, Flor grew up among fabrics, patterns, and sketches, she even stitched her fingers a couple of times when playing in her mom's workroom. All of this helped shape her aesthetic and gave her a great understanding of how design and the creative process in general works. Her professional background includes all aspects of theater, documentary coordination, video production and editing, and a degree in Advertising from the University of Puerto Rico.  She loves traveling (even if it's across the street), eating delicious food, and celebrating people's birthdays.  Flor is based in Denver, Colorado where she lives with her wife Ileanexis and their three plants. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Links Website URL https://www.florblakephoto.com Instagram URL https://www.instagram.com/flor_blake/ Facebook URL https://www.facebook.com/FlorBlakePhotography LinkedIn URL https://www.linkedin.com/in/florblake/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://togchat.com Episode Web Page: https://www.joeedelman.com/flor-blake My Website & Portfolio: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Don't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVE Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube! This week, I had an awesome opportunity to chat with a man who is a self-described light painter.  Jason Page resides in Southern Florida, and he not only practices this incredible art form, but he has invented a series of tools called light painting brushes, that along with the help of some simple flashlights, allow a light painter to paint in similar ways to an artist with a brush and a canvas. Jason is widely recognized as a leader in the current light painting movement. Jason has pioneered numerous light painting techniques and with his innovation he's created groundbreaking images. Jason's light painting work has been published internationally in print, as well as online he's exhibited his work in numerous shows and galleries, including locations like Palm Beach, Miami Amsterdam, and Moscow.  To quote Jason; "Light painting is its own art form. Just as drawing is an art form or painting is an art form, calling light painting a photographic technique would be the same thing as calling, painting a canvas technique."  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Links Jason Page Website: https://www.jasondpage.com/ Light Painting Photography Blog: https://www.lightpaintingphotography.com/ Light Painting Brushes: https://www.lightpaintingbrushes.com/ Jason on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lightpaintingbrushes/ Jason's YouTube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/user/lightpaintingphoto - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://togchat.com Episode Web Page: https://www.joeedelman.com/personal-branding/ My Website & Portfolio: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Don't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVE Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube! Lack of preparation is one of the biggest obstacles to improving your photography, regardless of the genre that you shoot. So this week, I want to share some thoughts with you about shoot prep.  Just like most photography skills, preparation is a skill that can be learned and with some discipline and experience this is an ability that can be improved over time, by almost anyone.  So in this episode my goal is to help you not only understand the importance of proper prep for a shoot but to also walk you through the details that will make your shoots go smoother and help you achieve better results.  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Links Video: DIY Portable Background Stand & Portrait Photography Background Material for studio or location - https://youtu.be/9VsP4T9AFp4 Video: You need a Makeup Artist for Great Portraits, Headshots and Model Shots - https://youtu.be/0_jBCvMJh9k Video - What To Know About Working With A Makeup Artist for great Portraits and Modeling shots - https://youtu.be/O9Wa504512E App - The Photographer's Ephemeris - https://photoephemeris.com/en App - PhotoPills - https://www.photopills.com/ App - SunSurveyor - https://www.sunsurveyor.com/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://togchat.com Episode Web Page: https://www.joeedelman.com/personal-branding/ My Website & Portfolio: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Don't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVE Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube! Personal Branding — Social Media — 4 words that make up two of the most misunderstood terms in the photography world. You might think that's because they have nothing to do with actually taking pictures. But I would argue that they have everything to do with taking pictures — regardless of the genre that you shoot. Make yourself comfortable and open up your mind to some new ideas that I sincerely believe can help you improve your photography and if it is one of your goals - your business as well. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Links Zig Ziglar - See You at the Top https://amzn.to/2QXkpKm ** Affiliate Link - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://togchat.com Episode Web Page: https://www.joeedelman.com/personal-branding/ My Website & Portfolio: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Don't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVE Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube! Robert Trawick routinely describes himself as “the most interesting photographer in Oklahoma” or “the most famous photographer in Oklahoma that you have never heard of”. I am going to take it a step further and declare him the MOST famous photographer you have never heard of. Robert has a long list of photographic accomplishments, and he loves sharing his knowledge, along with a few tricks honed over a 30+ year professional career. A self-professed ‘time-traveler’, Robert has been active in the industry since 1980 receiving most of his formal training during a twenty-year career as a USAF photojournalist. A recent convert to mirrorless camera system — Fujifilm X Series — he encourages others to embrace new technologies to achieve their photographic goals. Just spend a few minutes with Robert to gain insight into the passion that drives him to share the joy of crafting fabulous images. Robert is the co-host of the FotoFacts Podcast, a casual iTunes audio show highlighting photo education and industry influencers. Robert happily shares life’s beautiful “Instagram's” with the inspirations in his life — a fabulously talented photographer wife Terri & amazing daughters Amy, Amber, Georgia and Shannon. My TOGCHAT guests this week are Hasselblad Ambassadors Anna Devís and Daniel Rueda. Based in Valencia, Spain, Anna and Daniel are both trained architects who have combined their love for geometry, perspective, and storytelling to become the ultimate creative couple. This creative duo uses their architectural backgrounds to tell stories through fun and surprising images that are far from conventional architecture photography. Their style is characterized by their visual sense of humor, creativity, precision, and a delicate aesthetic inspired by the city, geometry, and minimalism. Their images succeed in establishing magnetic and joyful narratives that smartly suggest both the nature of human relations and the fascination with the urban environment.     Website: https://annandaniel.com  Anna on IG: https://instagram.com/anniset Daniel on IG: https://instagram.com/drcuerda   Facebook: https://facebook.com/anniset.drcuerda - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Photo Quote: "Sometimes the simplest pictures are the hardest to get." - Neil Leifer https://neilleifer.com/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Up and Coming: This week's Up and Coming photographer is Aijani Payne https://www.aijani-payne.com https://www.instagram.com/aijanipayne/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Episode Links: DIY Backgrounds: https://video.joeedelman.com/diybackground - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://tog.chat My Website: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Join the TOGCHAT Photography Group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/ispphotographers My calendar of upcoming Live-Online Photography Presentations https://www.joeedelman.com/edu/ I would love to be your PHOTOGRAPHY MENTOR! https://www.joeedelman.com/mentoring-for-photographers/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - FTC Disclosure: No sponsors have paid for inclusion in this video. I am an Olympus Visionary photographer, a Delkin Image Maker, a TetherTools Pro and a StellaPro Champion of Light. These companies do provide me with various pieces of gear that I frequently discuss or mention, however all words and opinions are my own, and I was not asked to produce this video. Photography critiques are traditionally nothing more than opinions offered by people who may be good at photography but who have little knowledge or concern for you or the reasons you took the photograph or how you took it. Critiques offer an opinion of what is wrong with your photograph based on their test and a bunch of creativity killer rules. In this episode, I am going to share the science behind why photo critiques don’t work and I will teach you how to effectively ask for feedback on your work and how to properly give feedback that is useful and has a positive impact on the photographer.  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Photo Quote: “Photography was a license to go whenever I wanted and to do what I wanted to do.” — Diane Arbus https://www.wikiart.org/en/diana-arbus - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Talent under 30: Please check out Alex Schon a 25-year-old wedding photographer based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. https://alexschon.com/ https://www.instagram.com/alexschon/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Episode Links: DIY Backgrounds: https://video.joeedelman.com/diybackground  Makeup Artist Directory listing makeup artists from all over the United States Videos: You need a Makeup Artist for Great Portraits, Headshots and Model Shots What To Know About Working With A Makeup Artist for great Portraits and Modeling shots - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOGCHAT Resources Show Website: https://tog.chat My Website: https://www.JoeEdelman.com Join the TOGCHAT Photography Group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/ispphotographers My calendar of upcoming Live-Online Photography Presentations https://www.joeedelman.com/edu/ I would love to be your PHOTOGRAPHY MENTOR! https://www.joeedelman.com/mentoring-for-photographers/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - FTC Disclosure: No sponsors have paid for inclusion in this video. I am an Olympus Visionary photographer, a Delkin Image Maker, a TetherTools Pro and a StellaPro Champion of Light. These companies do provide me with various pieces of gear that I frequently discuss or mention, however all words and opinions are my own, and I was not asked to produce this video.
