We have a breach in security! Someone is here that shouldn't be... And boy, has he got a lot to tell us. World renowned hard-hitting games journalist Kevin is with us today to break down the highs and lows, the tragedies and mountaintop celebrations of Essen Spiel 2023. But getting there, was no easy feat. Kevin tells us of his harrowing journey culminating in the legendary Hunt for Stefan. Elias and Ippo ask Kevin the hard hitting questions, like is Match of the Century better than just playing Chess (00:16:30), and just what are the strategic and geopolitical impacts of swapping out carboard tiles for plastic ones in the new Castles of Burgundy (00:30:05)? Was the Battle of Versailles a battle in the French Revolution, no World War I? Nobody knows! (00:43:33). Are dogs better than cats? (00:50:31)? Did Charles Darwin really go to the Galapagos Islands on a ship called The Beagle, and does that have anything to do with the last game we talked about (00:53:00)? And do people just buy games that have Japanese art themes because they're pretty (00:58:20)? Yes, of course they do. Ippokratis kicks off his notorious corner with an art piece named Spyfall, Asphalt Works, and Long Standing Beliefs (01:05:06) before the hosts subject Kevin to the same torture of having to listen to someone else talk for the back half of the episode, listing their Top 5 Games That Were Never Bested. #5s 01:18:47 #4s 01:22:51 #3s 01:27:05 #2s 01:29:17 #1s 01:37:03 Kevin then slips in his rubbish #1 pick, but nobody asked him, and fewer people cared. Security caught up and got rid of him. Afterall, we can't have renowned hard-hitting games journalists just sitting around while we're trying to record the world's greatest boardgame podcast. Secrets have to stay secrets afterall, and journalists like to share them with the world. [Small Print: Kevin is not a renowned hard-hitting games journalist, he's a school teacher and has mediocre journalistic skills at best] Twilight Imperium: The Veiled Masters (Dramatized Adaption Audiobook) GA: https://www.graphicaudio.net/twilight-imperium-3-the-veiled-masters.html Audible: https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Veiled-Masters-Dramatized-Adaptation-Audiobook/B0CD879KY6?qid Links to everything: linktr.ee/tabletopsessions Instagram (@tabletopsessions): www.instagram.com/tabletopsessions/ YouTube: www.youtube.com/@TabletopSessions BGG Guild: boardgamegeek.com/guild/3357
It's over, we're overrun! We have to get the president out of here! [OOK!] They're picking up steam [OOK! OOK!] We'll never make it. Those Neanderthals are too cunning. PUT THAT PEN DOWN! THIS IS NO TIME FOR POETRY! Looks like this is the end boys [OOK!] the finish line [OOK! OOK!] the stationfall. Time to get nostalgic. That didn't explain everything? Really? Do I have to? Fiiiiiine. The hosts have a longer tha usual banter to start things of, talking about all sorts of nonsense like types of mediums to serve the story and Arkham, xenophobia, etc, etc, bla, bla, bla. Eventually Ippo starts telling us about something really exciting...Trains! in his review of Martin Wallace's Totally Renamed Train Game (13:20). Elias goes into exhausting detail about his playthroughs of Neanderthal (26:35) like he didn't get enough of talking about this game in his four hour solo playthrough videos (links below!). Ippo lightens the mood and the existential horror of inter-species warfare with his "breakdown" of Poetry for Neanderthals (47:52), and both of them finish things off by talking about Elias' latest gaming obsession, Stationfall (53:58) The self indulgent (nostalgic?) Ippokratic Corner asks our hosts to go back through ye olde time machine to list their favorite Top 3s/5s from episodes gone by: No. 5s: (1:05:27) No. 4s: (1:12:03) No. 3s: (1:14:41) No. 2s: (1:17:48) No. 1s: (1:21:53) wait, what are you doing? {Hail to the Chief starts playing} Hail, convivial peons! His excellency Ippokratis is back from his tour of Greece and a non-descript island! After a report from the foreign office of boardgame stores far and wide and a congressional update on The Veiled Masters, Elias kicks things off with an on-the-ground runthrough of the shenanigans that are breaking the TTS Space Program: Leaving Earth (11:45). Our president, Ippokratis, then takes us through a play-by-play of his first year and a half in office: Mr. President (22:50). Ambassador/Jarl Elias breaks down the movements and goals of various resurgent Nordic populations: Pax Viking (49:07), and his excellency lightens the mood of the banter at the end with his State of the Prospero Hall Funkoverse address: Pan Am (1:01:44). We finally reach inauguration day during the very Presidential Ippokratic Corner (1:07:25) where our new leader of the free boardgame world asks us to list our Top 5 Games We Love But Are Bad At. Guess who's back! Deema and Byron fill in for Ippo in this throwback episode. Deema and Elias start things off by telling Byron about their most recent gaming sessions of Detective: City of Angels (7:40), Alchemists (19:31), Mage Knight (29:33), and Ra (40:51). Byron then takes charge, filling in for Ippo to host his Afrikatic Corner (53:37)in which he asks the crew to list their Top 3 Times They Were Wrong. The hosts wish you a Happy Soviet Traitor Day in this (almost entirely) space themed episode of the Tabletop Sessions Podcast. We start things off with some extremely exciting Twilight Imperium universe news (6:06). Elias breaks down a new annual holiday (12:46) before Ippo ruins the all-space theme with a discussion of Fantasy Realms (23:31). The guys then do a comparative review of Nemesis and Nemesis: Lockdown (31:54) before Elias rounds things out with stories of Nestle on Mars (56:50). The Ippokratic Corner/Living Room asks us to list our Top 5 Campaign Games (by people who don't play a lot of campaign games) at (1:11:33). The day has come. The legends spoke of this. The clash of titans. Or rather titan-ic boxes. After introducing our new YouTube channel, Ippo lets us know more about the only game he's been playing, Hegemony (5:50), at which point Elias segues beautifully with the use of socioeconomic punnery in Factory Funner (15:17), and Ippo breaks down his campaign experience of The King's Dilemma (26:48). The titanic clash of Havens occurs at 42:58 We end things with the Ippokratic Corner asking us to list our Top 5 boardgame components at 1:05:31 Instagram (@tabletopsessions): https://www.instagram.com/tabletopsessions/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TabletopSessions BGG Guild: https://boardgamegeek.com/guild/3357
You're not just dreaming due to the heat wave and socioeconomic struggles you've been facing. We gave you a promise and we're back, and we won't stop till we're the dominant podcast on the block. (I've had a thing for annoying puns lately- I think I'm ready to be a dad). After talking about recent sales, trades, and acquisitions, Ippo walks us through his latest gaming obsession, Hegemony (17:15), Elias tells us about another enjoyable deflating experience of being whooped at Dominant Species (32:05), we discuss kingmaking and looking at games as roleplaying scenarios with Oath (43:55), and finish up with a look at what we think is the best racing game you can buy, Heat (54:15). We end things with an Ippokratic corner (1:08:17) in which we rank our Top 5 Filler Games, and as always, everybody misunderstood the assignment. Hello gregarious geeks and gamers! We're back with Episode 34. After the initial banter, we get into an awesome story about Ippo bringing his kids to a game of Blood on the Clocktower (11:36), then Elias tells us about his recent in-person D&D game and Deema's nefarious master plan (25:14). Ippo gives us an play session report on Circadians: Chaos Order (39:06) and we heap massive praise and vent our pent up frustration and love on John Company 2nd Edition (50:28).
