Ryan Loften is the founder, owner and head coach of Mt Tam Bikes Camp. But that title doesn't even begin to describe Ryan! Since 2006, he has taught over 2000 kids mountain bike skills, trail etiquette, bike mechanics and local ecology in his home of Mill Valley, CA where he grew up BMX racing, dirt jumping and mountain biking all over Marin County. Ryan has been mentoring and coaching kids for the past 19 years because of the positive force mountain biking has been in his own life from the moment he pedaled on his own. Beyond coaching mountain biking year-round both with kids and privately for riders of all ages and abilities, Ryan spends time helping grow Cleary Bikes out of Sausalito, CA. What we admire most about Ryan is his truly calming yet infectious personality that always reminds you to be patient, present and light-hearted. We can’t wait for our son to be in one of his camps! I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. This interview was recorded live at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic.  We built this interview series from the title of our newest children’s picture book Taking The Lead that follows our animal characters along a journey to open a local bike shop and inspire their town to ride. Tim Kelley is the global brand manager for K-Edge, the very best bling for your bike. But his day job only begins to tell the story of TK as we like to call him. After climbing and skiing mountains around the world, Tim was bitten by the cycling bug while living in the Tetons during his time as the Lifelink and Dynafit National sales manager. His journey on the bike continues today as he inspires his own two young children to ride, and enjoy the endless beauty around them wherever they go. What I admire most about Tim is his deep ability to help us all recognize and remember the true value we get from our adventures outside, together. I’m honored to call Tim a lifelong best friend and I hope you enjoy our conversation from the 2018 Sea Otter Classic.
Sabra Davison is quite simply put, a rock star! Her lifelong passion for the outdoors and for cycling starts to explain her title as Executive Director, and Adventurer in Charge of Little Bellas, a national nonprofit committed to helping girls realize their full potential through mountain biking. Sabra actually co-founded Little Bellas in 2007 with her sister Lea Davison and close friend Angela Irvine as she was finishing up her degree in Women's and Gender Studies from Middlebury College.   What I admire most about Sabra is how she took time out of her busy schedule as a young competitive mountain biker and skier to reflect on the personal strengths those sports gave her, and then develop a path to share those strengths with other girls and women so they too can benefit from them.  Or as she puts it “reaping the intrinsic rewards of a hard ride”. Tim Goodall is the US Managing Director of the UK based children’s bicycle brand Islabikes. As Isla Rowntree’s first employee, Tim quickly came up the ranks of this fast growth company and took the lead in successfully bringing the brand to the United States in 2013. Cycling has been a big part of Tim’s life from a young age when he started commuting to school by bike as soon as he could ride, then cycle touring and racing competitively in multiple disciplines as a teen, which he still enjoys today. Cycling from Islabikes UK to France to see the Tour de France was a highlight of last year’s cycling escapades, and Tim continues to enjoy two wheeled adventure both at home and abroad. What we admire most about Tim is how he passionately connects the value of quality children’s bikes with the direct benefit to each individual family as well as our society as a whole. More kids on bikes simply means a better world for all of us. We hope you enjoy this interview recorded live at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic. Ginger and Brett Rosenbauer are the power couple behind the innovative children’s mountain bike brand Trailcraft Cycles. Based in Fort Collins, CO Ginger and Brett started their journey to elevate the quality of kids bikes when they realized how limiting the youth bike options were for their two kids. What we admire most about Ginger and Brett is their ability to take on a challenge and “get the job done”. With a combination of Ginger’s emerging business leadership and Brett’s skill in product design from his career in the bike industry, this family business is ready to shake up the kids bike market in a big way. After witnessing the power of organized mountain biking to help teenagers learn life-long lessons during his seven years of coaching the Berkeley High School Mountain Bike Team, Austin decided to put his career in natural resource management and public policy mediation on hold to become the president of NICA in late 2012. Since then, he has helped grow NICA into the largest youth cycling program in the United States. Austin is a strong believer in the power of cycling to transform individuals and communities and loves to tour and ride all types of bikes with his wife and friends. Austin received a Community Leadership Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition and was named by BICYCLING Magazine as one of 21 “New Heroes of Cycling” in 2016 “. There is no doubt Austin is one of the most influential leaders in youth development as well as the bicycle industry. What we admire most about Austin is his crystal clear communication about how bicycling helps kids develop into the leaders of tomorrow, brings communities together, and helps infuse a code of environmental stewardship in us all.  This interview was recorded live at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic. Jacob and Sarah Rheuban are 100% focused on making the best kids bikes available today through their children’s bike brand Prevelo Bikes based in West Lake Village CA. This dynamic duo decided to put aside previous professional careers as lawyers to help more families enjoy the benefits their own family has seen from riding together. We love how these family entrepreneurs embrace a car-less lifestyle, help fuel the movement to get more families on bikes, and put their money where their mouths are as members of 1% For the Planet. Jeff Cleary woke up one day while working as a California attorney and said wait a minute, how come there are no quality kids bikes? That simple question led him to founding Cleary Bikes in 2014. Based out of Sausalito CA, Cleary Bikes are now recognized worldwide for their lightweight, durability, kid optimized geometry, and vibrant colors. What I admire most about Jeff though is his personal motivation to keep building great bikes for kids - his favorite pastime is simply riding bikes with his 4 year old son. I always enjoy the opportunity to sit and talk with Jeff and I hope you enjoy this interview recorded live at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey CA. For the last 30 years Trips for Kids has connected 200,000 children in the US with the power of the bicycle. After speaking with founder Marilyn Price in a separate interview, I was excited to sit down with Executive Director Robert Alan Ping, and Sponsorship Manager Andy Phelps to hear what lies ahead for the organization as they march towards their goal of reaching half a million children through their programs. These guys are deeply passionate about youth development and really growing the leaders of tomorrow. I hope you enjoy this interview recorded at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic. Jerry Lawson spent the first 20+ years of his professional career developing new products and strategy for global retailers like Amazon and Tesco before he and his wife followed their passion for bicycling and their desire to find lightweight bikes for their children. Now, after only 5 years their UK based children’s bike brand Frog Bikes is sold in over 40 countries, recently won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise, and became the official kids bike of USA Cycling in 2018. What I admire most about Jerry is an unwavering belief in the social benefits of the bicycle and the fact that if we want more adults on bikes, we need to have more kids on bikes. I had a great time talking with Jerry at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey CA. Mike Riemer aka Kid, aka Miker, is known in the bike industry as the marketing mojo behind Salsa Cycles and their adventure by bike movement. Mike was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea where his parents served as Lutheran missionaries for 43 years. He’s been “in” the bike industry in some form or fashion since the early 90’s or what he likes to call “the golden days of mountain biking”. Along the way, he’s been a race series promoter, zine publisher, and freelance photographer and writer. For the last 24 years he’s worked for bike parts distributor Quality Bicycle Products, entering the building as a warehouse worker, but having spent the last 14 years as the Marketing Manager for Salsa Cycles. He has a 21-year-old son, Jordan, and lives in Richfield, Minnesota. With his combination of genuine passion for cycling and organic storytelling, Mike has been helping us all connect with the purest aspects of bicycle travel through his inspiring tales of adventure by bike. Salsa launched the Timberjack 20 and 24 models, what they refer to as Timberjack Kids, this past December. Salsa’s first foray into the Kid’s bike world. Lelan Dains is the Operations Manager for Dirty Kanza Promotions and is a native of Emporia, KS. After graduating from Emporia State University with a degree in Recreation Management, he spent much of his time time traveling and working in various recreation fields including leading cycling excursions all over the world as the Camp Director for Carmichael Training Systems. When the opportunity arose to return to his hometown and bring his talents to the Dirty Kanza Promotions organization it was a dream come true! What I admire most about Lelan as how he is taking the lead through his position as a co-owner of the world’s premier gravel race to get more kids and families into the sport of gravel riding. Lelan has been instrumental forming the Dirty Kanza Youth Cycling Fund and the DK High school race. Beyond bringing life-changing adventure experiences to folks, LeLan spends every free moment with his amazing wife and daughter. Ted Theochung is not exactly your typical bicycle industry leader. After graduating from the Stanford Business school, Ted embarked on a twenty year career as a veteran technology executive with strategy and corporate development roles within Fortune 500 companies, and a few stints as a vice president for several tech startups. With a linkedin profile like that I was dying to find out how he landed the role as the current CEO of the Specialized Foundation and how his belief in the transformative power of cycling is fueling their incredible Riding For Focus program. As you’ll learn from Ted, exercise warms up the brain for learning so head out for a ride, get your heart rate up and get ready to learn about how Ted and his team are embedding cycling into schools around the country. Rebecca Rusch’s bio says that Rebecca is 'the queen of pain with a heart of gold'.    Well, that sums up everything you need to know about this 30 year professional athlete. But if you’re into details, Rebecca is a 7x World Champion in multiple sports, 4x Leadville 100 mtb champion, 3x winner of the Dirty Kanza 200, she summited Mt. Kilamanjaro by bike, holds the record for the fastest ride on the Kokapelli trail, and was recently the first person to ride the entire length of the Ho Chi Min trail which you absolutely need to see for yourself in her inspiring movie Blood Road. But, beyond all that, what I admire most about Rebecca is her unwavering belief in the power of the bicycle to bring out the best in people and communities... and her dedication to bringing new people into the tribe of bikes.   Dave Wiens is known by many of you for his six consecutive wins in the Leadville Trail 100 MTB mountain bike race, between 2003 and 2008, where he even bested Tour de France riders Floyd Landis and Lance Armstrong. But even before that Dave was inducted to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2000 after he helped define professional mountain bike racing in the late 1900’s! Today, Dave is focusing his efforts on mountain bike trail advocacy, something he has always been passionate about, as the new Executive Director of IMBA the International Mountain Bike Association. Previous to working for IMBA Dave was also the founder and executive director of Gunnison Trails, and race director for the Gunnison Growler. I had a great time at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic hearing why mountain bikes matter to Dave and I hope you do too!   Eric Porter found his love for bikes exploring his local trails as a kid in Louisville, Kentucky. Before long he was crowned the National Downhill and Slalom Champion in 2001. From there Eric launched a professional Freeride mountain bike career competing all over the world and pushing the boundaries of ride style in mountain bike films. These days, Eric lives in Midway, Utah with his wife and two young sons while working closely with Diamondback Bikes helping design and test many of their latest models on trails around the world, representing Clif Bar and Magura as a sponsored athlete, and helping drive local trail development as the vice president of the Wasatch Trail Alliance. As I think you’ll hear in this interview, what we admire most about Eric is that he truly lives to share the stoke. Whether it’s introducing his two sons to the mountain lifestyle he loves so much, or introducing people he meets to all aspects of cycling from mountain biking to road, gravel, bike packing and everything in between. So throw your earbuds in, head out for a ride, and listen to Eric’s incredible journey from a mountain biker to a true cyclist. In 1988 Marilyn Price founded the non-profit Trips For Kids in Marin, CA which has since helped over 185,000 children connect with the bicycle through 75 chapters across the US! At 77 years young Marilyn rides her bike everyday and is still active as a Trips For Kids board member.  Recently, her love of the environment motivated her to sell her car so she can be the change she wants to see in the world and pedal long into the next chapter of her life! We had such a wonderful time hearing Marilyn’s story and I hope you do too! Amazing quotes from Marilyn: “The bicycle is one of the most important things we have in this world.” “If people do it and bike everyday I’ll be able to bike when I’m 95.” “When I climb a hill and have a problem. The problem is with me all the way but when I go down it dissolves and disappears.” “Stay true to what you’re doing and your vision.” This interview was recorded Live from the Buddy Pegs Media booth at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey CA. Remember the first time you pedaled off on your own Freedom machine, without Mom or Dad’s steading hand? Two time Olympic mountain biker Lea Davison remembers, and in this interview you’ll hear how the bike was her ticket to freedom as a young girl... and a steady supply of Snapple. Today Lea strives to take The Lead on the world cup mountain bike circuit and definitely takes the lead with her continued dedication to empowering girls through the non-profit she co-founded, Little Bellas. Enjoy this very special interview with Gary Fisher where we cover A LOT of topics. If you know gary, you know it’s best to sit back and let him tell you some great stories and that’s just what we did. Most of us have heard the story of how Gary helped inspire the birth of modern mountain biking but what we love about this interview is hearing what lead up to those days. Running light shows for the Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones, living in a commune with the New Riders of The Purple Sage. Meeting his future business partner Charlie Kelly (they both had matching Colnago bicycles). Starting the company “Mountain Bikes” in 1979 after his road racing career was set aside with the 1979 USA boycott of the Olympics. Today, Gary works for Trek Bicycles and travels the country speaking with elected leaders and championing bicycles as a simple solution for today’s modern problems. When he’s not hanging at the library with his 3 year old son! This interview was recorded Live from the Buddy Pegs Media booth at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey CA. Rich Tauer is the President of Quality Bicycle Products or as we call it in the bike industry QBP. Over the last 30 years QBP has grown into the largest parts distributor in the US, the parent company of other successful brands like Salsa Cycles, and a leader in green building with their LEED certified distributions centers.   What we really admire about QBP is their commitment to supporting local bike shops, getting more butts on bikes, taking a lead in the development of healthy sustainable bike communities everywhere, AND the personal development of their employees. Over his 26 year career Rich ascended from a front line customer service agent to recently taking over for the company’s founder as president. Rich was a fantastic guest and I hope you enjoy his story. This interview was recorded Live from the Buddy Pegs Media booth at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey CA.
