We love a bonus pod, particularly in weeks when we have lots of feedback or questions from the 'Talk Birdie To Me' Wolfpack, too much to fit into the normal pod, so we smash out a bonus pod! Fun!Today's a ripper with a few voicemails. We have a voicemail from Peter who has an idea about allowing more holes to be played as Par 3 holes, leading to a chat about tees.Voicemail from Steve, and an email from Hugh, both asking about Minjee Lee's form and if it has anything to do with moving to Callaway. Mark talks about how he managed the process of changing clubs to ensure it was not any more difficult than it already was.An email from Paul asking about coaches teaching techniques to golfers that slow down play, and we discuss the importance of reading greens. Nick tells us was the best green reader he ever saw.And a voicemail from Jack in Camperdown, Victoria, asking about rule changes, specifically bunker play at his course. A great pod, that takes a turn for the worse when we discuss Snot Blocks, which Nick has never heard of, and Mark and Dan attempt (badly) to explain what they are.A big thanks to our wonderful Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, like the have for Nick O'Hern. Nick O'Hern is a PING guy through and through, and has been for years. That's because PING are the best in the business. But he does keep an eye on what other gear is around, and he has a new wedge that he is excited about, and Mark is a little envious of!But into the show. Congrats to Lydia Ko, another win, and her second gold medal in a couple of weeks with the win at St Andrews. Mark loves seeing the women back at the home of golf, and Nick and Mark discuss some of what they watched. A tough tournament for the Aussies, but Lydia is a superstar and it was a great win. Nick and Mark talk about the pressure of playing at St Andrews, and Mark talks about the legendary Ian Baker-Finch's tough day there many years ago.Mark tells a story about being a kid and checking out all the pros gear at Huntingdale when they weren't around. A bit naughty, but very exciting.Mark raises an aspect of women's golf that he calls a 'disgrace' and both he and Nick believe this should be immediately changed. It is a part of women's golf that has been addressed with the men, and should be fixed with the women's game. Australia's very own Karen Lunn is one of those disadvantaged by this.Nick and Mark discuss the Fedex cup, and how they are not a fan of the format for the final. We discuss how it could be improved. We then discuss milkshakes. Not a typo. We discuss milkshakes. Has this podcast jumped the shark? Possibly.Mark made some comments on radio this week about 13th Beach Golf Club in Victoria, which Helen from the club has reached out to us to discuss. We give Helen a call and she talks us through some of the fantastic initiatives that 13th Beach have to grow women's participation and membership.Mark describes todays Top 5 from Nick, thanks to the mighty Southern Golf Club, has his 'best ever'. Nick counts down his Top 5 'tool behaviour' moments in golf. Could have been a Top 20 easily.Nick takes us around the world with the PING global results, plenty going on to discuss. And Mark raises his concerns to Nick about the cancellation of the first stage of the DP World Tour qualifying school in Australia. Nick has been discussing it with the powers that be, and it may not all be bad news, but some further research needed....watch this space. We wrap the pod with a Masterclass 'how not to be Keegan Bradley' from Mark.A big thanks to our wonderful Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, like the have for Nick O'Hern. A fun pod this week, Mark has noticed that short follow throughs when putting are in vogue, and he wants to discuss with Nick.Nick has just returned from a few days in Vietnam playing golf and tells us about the courses he played which were excellent - but it was hot! Who'd have thought. This gives Mark an idea about doing a 'Nick and Mark golf trip' where they head off and play a few courses in a week, inviting you along as well. We explore where this week long golf tour could go....Nick and Mark reckon a New Zealand / Tassie leg would be fun.Mark was watching the US amateur final instead of the Fedex cup on monday, he loved it and we discuss some of the performances and how the bubble shaped up.Is Jon Rahm happy at LIV? Couple of rumours suggest he isn't, Nick and Mark discuss them. Of course they may be untrue, and Rahm might be happy as a clam. Midway through our Rahm conversation, the hotline rings and it's Marek from Seaford in Victoria with a question about rules and specifically changing them. Marek is new to the Talk Birdie Wolfpack, so welcome aboard the team! After the Turn we discover some shocking news about a food item that Nick has never eaten until last week. Surprising. But he's discovered this food now and loves it.We welcome the Southern Golf Club on board, they're partnering with us for the Top 5 each week - and it's a fun one to kick off with. Marks Top 5 Golf Technique Fads. He then decides that, after a chat about technique fads, he may need to redo his ironically named DVD ''87 ways to simplify golf". Still amuses us every time we hear the name.PING Global results with Nick, plenty to run through and we hear a great story from Mark about Ken Tanigawa.Plenty of feedback this week, including an update on our 'Rake-Gate' poll. Will we be doing a bonus pod on rakes? We find out on todays pod when we reveal the results of the poll - it's your call. And a ripping masterclass this week from Nick O'Hern inspired by Hideki Matsuyama in Memphis at the weekend.A big thanks to our wonderful Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, like the have for Nick O'Hern. A huge week in golf, plenty of great things to discuss, and some sad news with the passing of Chi-Chi Rodríguez, a true legend of the game. Nick and Mark chat about his wonderful legacy, and we hear where the 'sword dance' came from, a great story. To the Olympics. We loved it. And whilst Nick and Mark have mixed feelings about golf in the Olympics, the gold medal win from Lydia Ko was undeniably special. We chat about Lydia and the win, and how Hannah Green nearly was in play for a bronze. Is the format right for the Olympics? Nick and Mark think it isn't and discuss. And if golf is in the Olympics, why is it not in the Paralympics? We all think it should be. And we discuss Raygun. Oh dear.Nick has some stats that he has read in Australian Golf Digest, they're stats from the 'average' player on tour and are fascinating. Mark starts banging on about rakes again. We decide to settle once and for all whether we should do Mark's idea of a bonus pod on rakes with a poll. Fingers crossed you vote no. After the turn, Nick gets in the rake mood and tells a story about rakes.Top 5 today from Nick and inspired by Lydia Ko, the Top 5 New Zealand golfers of all time. Leads to a very funny story from Mark about Frank Nobilo. We call a member of the pod Wolfpack, Fox, who has a great story to share with Nick and Mark - it's a cracker. Then Fox goes and ruins it by complimenting Mark on his recent jokes. Come on Fox, you're better than that.A big PING global results from Nick, plenty of feedback this week, and a cracking 'Lydia Ko' inspired masterclass from Mark.We end the show talking about a charity golf day in Grafton, raising money for 'Our Kids' who support local hospitals in the region. Nick and Mark always love receiving your voicemails, some we play in the show and others we pop in the feed here. We had a voicemail from Dan in The Blue Mountains today asking about the format for golf in the Olympics and giving his view on what an alternate format could look like. What do you think of Dan's suggestion? Nick and Mark discuss their views on the format for the Olympics this arvo on the pod.And if you want to leave a voicemail - it's easy, head to our website here on your mobile or computer, hit the record button, tell us who you are, where you're from, where you play your golf, and leave your message. The watchMynumbers app is brilliant if you want to improve your golf, and they're a big supporter of Talk Birdie To Me. Nick and Mark decided to get founder Frank Colautti, and Tour Pro Aiden Didone, who uses the app in his career, in for a chat.In the first half of the pod we hear from Frank about why he founded it, where the idea came from. He talks about a number of aspects of the app, one of the important ones being how it captures not only your performance, but how you felt about the shot - Frank, Nick and Mark discuss why this is important. We discuss the 'pursuit of the perfect shot'.After the turn, Tour Pro Aiden Didone is with us, he's been working with Frank on the app for some time and uses it in his own career. Nick and Mark analyse Aiden's game, and using the watchMynumbers app live on the pod identify the areas that they believe he can lean into in, or work on, in his game. It's a real-time stats analysis, and the app provides insightful, usable data in less than 2 minutes! It's a great chat with Frank and Aiden, and you can download the watchMynumbers app from Google Play or the App Store. Another fun episode this week, with plenty of golf to discuss. We start with a text that Mark received from former Herald Sun golf journo Brian Meldrum about a fantastic achievement from Huntingdale member Ken Chandler recently. Fantastic. We love these stories.Nick mentions that Gary Player's 1974 Claret Jug replica was sold recently by his son, not with Gary's approval unfortunately. But a lazy 400k for him (the son not Gary).Back to Huntingdale, we discuss the development and how it is going. It is going to be very, very good. Mark starts banging on about trees again. The Olympics. Nick and Mark haven't seen a lot of the golf, in fact Mark zero, Nick only highlights, but they're loving the Olympics - just not so much the golf. We discuss the ridiculous outfits the US golf team were wearing, and then Mark asks Nick who should win golfer of the year, and does the Olympic gold medal for Scottie Scheffler count towards that?Great win from Aussie Karl Vilips on the Korn Ferry tour in Utah. Nick and Mark discuss how he came to move to America, and the advice Mark gave him before he did. Did Karl listen to Mark?Leds to a chat about college scholarships for young golfers, Mark is a huge advocate of it, as is Nick. We hear how Mark obtained his scholarship and what it did for his golf. And we discuss the path Max Charles went on, and how it evolved his game.Voicemail comes in during the pod from Brad who has a ripping question about mentoring kids in golf, Nick and Mark have some thoughts.A top 5 from Mark this week on his 'stupidest' sports in the Olympics....does golf get a run?Nick wraps up all the results in the last week or so in the PING global results, we have a heap of feedback to run through from the Talk Birdie Wolfpack, and inspired by Moriya Jutanufarn Nicks masterclass is on using a belly wedge.A big thanks to our wonderful Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. Another bonus Q&A pod where we discuss some of your questions that we didn't have time for on the normal pod, or might take a bit longer to discuss.Today half a dozen questions from Talk Birdie To Me Wolfpack members.Jay is finding some differences playing on couch vs kikuyu grass and wants Nick and Marks thoughts;Ashley has a comment and question about pros playing in club competitions;Robbie wants to discuss Huntingdale and course renovations more broadly;Travis has some opinions on Stableford and wants the boys thoughts;Wayne asked Nick and Mark for their Top 5 Aussie golfers, male or female, since 1980. We open the pod with big and breaking news from Mark on a major roadblock to a successful merger of the LIV and PGA, this has come from an EXTREMELY high and very reliable source within LIV. It shocked Mark when he heard it, and in turn Nick when Mark revealed it on the podcast. In Nick and Mark's view, this makes a merger the two organisations highly unlikely, and it may lead to a ramping up from LIV of poaching PGA players again. We discuss the likely targets. After this big news settles a bit, it has taken all of us aback a little, we discuss the move of LIV Adelaide to the new February date, Mark loves it, Nick does as well, and we discuss the benefits and difficulties, of moving other Australian tournaments to February. Marks been banging on about it for years, Nick loves the thought but doesn't believe it will work for the players. We discuss appearance fees for Australian players to come home. Should it happen? Should they support the home tournament?Nick and Mark love the number of Kiwis and Aussies playing the seniors tour. We run through the names from the weekend just gone. And the Olympics, we chat about the tennis, skateboarding, Matildas - we're all loving it. Nick loves golf being in the Olympics, Mark hates it. They each explain why. And Mark wants to get his mate Marcus Fraser who either holds, or did hold for a long time, the record for the lowest golf score at an Olympic Games.Pod listener Tim calls the hotline to have a crack at Mark. Whilst Mark defends himself, Nick and Third Man feel Tim makes a fair point. Nicks Top 5 is on aggressive gallery interactions with tour pros. Leading to a very funny story about Marks best mate Colin Montgomery.Plenty of feedback, on Links Golf, Anchoring and Justin Rose. Then we head around the world with the PING global results from Nick, and Marks Masterclass for watchMynumbers is on 'effortless power in your backswing'.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. Marko is working on a big story which is not quite ready, he has a couple of things to verify first, and he intends to put the spotlight on this story in this weeks episode of the Talk Birdie To Me podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
A bonus pod today where we run through some of your questions.Pod listener Laird had a question about Rob MacIntyre and the sprinkler incident in Scotland, specifically around the rules and whether they were broken, bent, or fine. So we called our rules guy Stu from the excellent GolfRules Questions pod to clarify. Whilst we had Stu on the phone Nick and Mark had a couple of other questions for him. Then we spoke to Neil from Hamilton in New Zealand who had a couple of questions, couple of comments, and something to brag about - and rightly so! He also tells us the course in New Zealand that the locals call St. Andrews.Love your feedback, keep it coming!A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. Gee the time difference to watch The Open Championship is a punish in Australia and New Zealand, specifically later in the day, but we got some in live and plenty of highlights....and what a tournament it was! Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen spend a bit of time unpacking some of the key moments. The weather played a role, as we expect it will in this tournament, but Mark feels it was perfect to test the players. And Nick and Mark discuss whether the pros should play more Links golf than they do, given the uniqueness of these courses. Mark loves the 18th hole at Royal Troon, not everyone does.Jason Day's outfit. Again, he stood out. Nick runs through all the Aussie & Kiwi results - Adam Scott the strongest at T10, with Daniel Hillier from New Zealand having a strong tournament as well at T19.Nick and Mark discuss the role that the wind plays at Royal Troon, and how the locals have a distinct advantage, and what the visiting players can do about it. Nick and Mark both talk about the Open Championships that they played in respectively.Xander. A fantastic performance, a well deserved win. How many majors can he win? How about his back 9 on the final day? How will Mark go pronouncing his name correctly?Mark's best mate*, Colin Montgomery, had a crack at Tiger Woods playing in the tournament. We listen to Tiger's response.Disappointingly, just prior to the Turn, Mark decides that he wants to tell another joke. Honestly we blame some of you for encouraging him. It is as appalling as you'd expect. After the Turn, he (nearly) makes up for it with a ripping Top 5 on the best 18th holes in The Open rotation courses. During that we get a voicemail from David from Melbourne who has a comment and question about the Metropolitan / Huntingdale proposed merger. The PING global results this week are huge, so much golf on over the last few days, and Nick takes us through it all. Lots of feedback as usual, in fact we'll do a bonus feedback pod later in the week with some more of the feedback from you.And the Masterclass from Nick today is on getting a ball up quickly out of a deep bunker.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. Another big week in golf and Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen are all over it.We start by discussing Keegan Bradley's appointment as the captain of the US Ryder Cup team, an appointment which took us all by surprise. But we quickly move on to Steph Kyriacou's performance in the Evian, she did so well and nearly won her first major but just fell a little short to a fast finishing Ayaka Furue.Mark loves Ludvig Åberg but wasn't over the moon with his performance at the weekend. On the positive side, Mark feels his Ludvig betting strategy is in good shape. And what a win for Bobby MacIntyre in the Scottish Open at the weekend, beating our own Adam Scott by one. Nick and Mark chat about the 16th hole. So good.Mark asks Nick why metal spikes are still allowed. He has a theory.Huge news out of Melbourne with Metropolitan and Huntingdale looking at a merger proposal. Nick and Mark both rate the move, which has been a long time coming, and decide on the fly to arrange a bonus pod with the respective club captains. Mark gets straight on the phone at the turn and fires off texts everywhere to arrange it....which results in SMS replies coming in throughout the second half of the pod! We didn't think that one through.Massive weekend in Spain, the Euros win over England in the soccer (football!), Wimbledon with Alcaraz, and LIV. Good week to be a Spaniard. Olé!!!We play a voicemail from Tim in Sorrento, Western Australia, who has a question for Nick and Mark about cleaning your equipment - and he reckons No Laying Up might have been listening to Talk Birdie To Me. Why wouldn't they.A fun Top 5 today, Nick counts down his Top 5 'duels' at the Open Championship, Mark comes up with an idea to do a Top 5 'plaquable bogeys'. You read that correctly. We're hoping he forgets. He's asked us to remind him, but we won't.Lots of feedback on the bonus pod last week with James Sutherland last week, too much to read out, so we read about 5 or 6. Mixed feedback on Marks joke last week. Some of you liked it. Poor form. Plenty of other feedback as well, keep it coming.A massive PING global results this week, Nick takes us through it - but we get interrupted mid PING global when pod listener Tim from Canberra calls the hotline to ask a question about Aaron Baddeley...Nick hooks back into the results without missing a bit after Tim calls. And a ripper masterclass thanks to the gang at the watchMynumbers app, on putting on slower greens.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners, who we hope will forgive Marks joke:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. After yesterday's big bonus pod with Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland, today is the normal pod - 24 hours later than usual, but hopefully you enjoyed the chat with James. If you haven't heard it, have a listen.Plenty on today's show. Nick has just come back from playing Long Island in zero degree temperatures, thankfully he has a shiny new clothing sponsor to keep him warm. Cutter and Buck if you must know. Mark raises golf course renovations, specifically why they do them so slowly (ie: 9 holes at a time). We've got a poll up on twitter here, love your thoughts.Mark also names the worst golf coach he ever had. And then, without any sense of irony, goes on to outline a fantastic tip that this coach gave him. And Nick admits to something that he did on a golf course that he has never told anyone.Nick and Mark discuss yesterday's bonus pod with James Sutherland and how much they enjoyed it, they are particularly pleased that James seems to be aiming high and thinking big.....two words resonated with them: 'Rolex Series'. We can dream.Marks turn for the Top 5 this week and what initially felt like a filler Top 5 that he'd given zero thought to actually turned out to be pretty good.Nick has a great fun fact on the legendary Bernhard Langer, and runs through some great results in the PING global results - not the least of which was a fantastic #2 finish from David Micheluzzi on the DP World Tour. Some fantastic feedback including more comments on our bonus pod a couple of weeks ago with Jonathan Yarwood - and a mate of Nicks took up the invite to get some advice from Jonathan via Skillest with brilliant results. And a great masterclass from Nick, requested by Talk Birdie listener Peter Riley on hitting out of the long rough. And finally an apology. Into the turn today Mark, for reasons best known to himself, decided to tell a joke. It was awful. We're embarrassed. We considered not airing it, but he insisted. And that means you need to hear it, for which we cannot apologise enough. The only thing that will prevent a reoccurrence is a reality check via feedback, so let us know on socials, leave a voicemail, whatever you prefer.....but our heartfelt apologies for this misstep.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners, who we hope will forgive Marks joke:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear.
