Joe: Origins #19 from IDW Publishing, released September 2010. Synopsis: "Larry Hama returns along with super-star Joe Benitez and it's a silent issue with Snake-Eyes! Not to steal from Stan but, "'Nuff said." Why are we reviewing GI Joe origins 19, a 15 year old comic, randomly the 19th issue of a book from the IDW continuity? Because G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #321 Will Be an All-New Silent Issue released October 2025 and will be a sequel to this issue! “This (ARAH 321) is another all-silent issue featuring the return of the sound-weaponizing characters introduced in GI JOE ORIGINS #19,” said Larry Hama. “They have developed an air-portable version of their sonic weapon and have mounted it in a stealth dirigible to attack the GI Joe installation under Camp Greer in the Utah desert. Snake-Eyes and Dawn Moreno having been at the sound-proof range in the lowest level of the Pit, are the only Joes unaffected, and must attack the airship by themselves.” Creative team Writer: Larry Hama Pencils: Joe Benitez Inks: Victor Llamas Colors: J. Brown Assistant Editor: Carlos Guzman Editor: Andy Schmidt Uncredited layouts: Larry Hama "I took a stab at another silent Snake-Eyes story, but with more complex visual storytelling and self-imposed parameters like keeping track of ammo and ordnance expenditures. "Wrote" it and did layouts. The amazing Joe Benitez did the finished art. It should be on the stands in September" - Larry Hama Facebook post Cover Credits Cover A: Artist: Joe Benitiez and Victor Llamas, Colors by J. Tom DeFalco Interview (Marvel Edior of GI Joe 1-6 & EIC) Edited audio version of interview, also available as video talking heads https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMwIScYZr-s Mark and Tim talk with Tom DeFalco (G.I. Joe editor for Marvel issues 1-6 & Editor In Chief 1987-1994). We talk about the process of working with the Marvel & Hasbro getting G.I.Joe off the ground in 1981, editing the first few issues, G.I. Joe's eventual cancellation - plus Marvel and the wider comics market in this era. Tom DeFalco (born June 26, 1950) is an American comic book writer and editor well known for his association with Marvel Comics, with long runs on Amazing Spider-Man including on the Clone Saga, Thor, Fantastic Four, and in the creation of Spider-Girl and Spider Ham, DeFalco became Marvel's tenth editor-in-chief in April 1987. And serving 7 years in the role, to 1994, making him one of the longest serving individuals to hold that post. DeFalco worked closely with toy manufacturer Hasbro in the early 1980s, part of the Marvel creative team that produced the backstory and dossiers that served as the basis for the relaunch of the phenomenally successful G.I. Joe toy and creating the Marvel comic G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero in June 1982. DeFalco personally edited the first six issues (handing over to Denny O'Neil in January 1983). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_DeFalco https://leagueofcomicgeeks.com/people/980/tom-defalco/comics
New episode: Remembering Alan Hassenfeld + audio of 2017 Hascon G.I. Joe legends dinner. This episode includes a short introduction from Tim, and then audio of Alan Hassenfeld rom the 2017 Hascon G.I. Joe legends dinner. The audio is not great but we thought it was worth sharing. Alan Hassenfeld passed away in London on July 8, 2025, at the age of 76. He was CEO of Hasbro in 1989 after the death of his brother Stephen, and remained in the position until 2003. Tim wrote a blog about Hassenfeld here: https://arealamericanbook.com/2025/07/10/remembering-alan-hassenfeld/#more-8857 The blog included a transcript of Alan Hassenfeld's remarks from the 2017 Hascon G.I. Joe legends dinner. I suggested to Tim that while the quality of audio is not great (recorded from where Tim was sitting in the audience) it would be worth sharing for posterity. You can read more about Hascon 2017 here: https://arealamericanbook.com/2018/06/21/hascon-2017-the-real-american-book-convention-report/
