After the PICU: Understanding Post ICU Trauma in Kids

When a child faces a life threatening illness or injury, we often assume that they have "recovered" when they leave the ICU, the hospital or graduate from follow up. For many kids and families, however, the traumatic stress of an ICU stay or a life threatening illness or injury lingers, with families often searching for help and answers in how to best support their child. Joining us on this episode is Jen Aspengren, founder and CEO of Alongside Network, an organization that works directly with families to validate, connect and support them as they adjust to life after the hospital.View the transcript here:https://www.childrensmn.org/for-health-professionals/talking-pediatrics-podcast/talking-pediatrics-after-the-picu-understanding-post-icu-trauma-in-kids-8-22-25/

A Question of Ethics: Talking About Disability: Suffering, Quality of Life and Value Distinctions

Talking about disability in clinical encounters with parents, families, and patients can be very challenging. Decision-making around benefits and burdens of interventions and how they impact what future life for a child might be like inherently includes discussions of disability. However, it is easy for these conversations to view disability as something wholly negative, making it feel, or even it becoming, subject to many types of value distinctions. This can be a difficult space to navigate, especially for pediatric clinicians supporting families in informed decision making. We talk with bioethicist Jaime Konerman-Sease about the nuances of talking about disability, quality of life, and suffering, and how we can talk about disability with our patients and families.View the transcript here:https://www.childrensmn.org/for-health-professionals/talking-pediatrics-podcast/talking-pediatrics-a-question-of-ethics-talking-about-disability-8-8-25/

Crack The Case: Periorbital Edema and Abdominal Distention in a Previously Healthy Toddler

Evaluation of a child with edema can be stress-inducing given the differential diagnoses invoked including nephrotic syndrome, liver disease, and heart failure. Determining the cause involves dusting off some principles of physics. Protein, namely albumin, hangs onto water to maintain intravascular osmotic pressure. Not having enough protein causes leakage into surrounding tissues to create characteristic puffiness, begging the question: are we losing protein or not making enough? If protein and osmosis are not the primary drivers, we must also consider capillary hydrostatic pressure as we see with the engorged vessels of heart disease or the retention of fluids with chronic kidney disease. This case investigates a toddler with an initial complaint of periorbital edema and abdominal distention to frame an approach to edema in pediatrics.

Crack the Case: Fever in a Returning Traveler

We are blessed to have a very international patient population at our clinic in Minneapolis, helped by the Twin Cities reputation as a safe and supportive place for immigrants, refugees and asylees. With roots abroad, many of our families frequently travel home, where infectious disease exposures carry a unique profile compared to that of the U.S. It is therefore not surprising that having a returning traveler with fever, especially when ill appearing, can be a stressful trip down infectious disease memory lane. Today’s episode will explore fever in a returning traveler and tools to narrow your differential during these encounters.View the transcript here:https://www.childrensmn.org/for-health-professionals/talking-pediatrics-podcast/talking-pediatrics-crack-the-case-fever-in-a-returning-traveler-2-7-25/
