Fellow TCK, Carmen, gives us an update on her transition to Colombia from earlier this year. She shares some of the things she has gotten used to and some of the new challenges she is facing in this transition. Born in Germany, grew up and educated in Beijing and the UK, Carmen was exposed to a variety of cultures as a result of her multicultural upbringing to a German father and a Cantonese mother. At just 15 months old, Carmen and her family relocated to Beijing due to her father’s work assignment, a move that was initially intended to last two years. The biggest plot twist led them to stay in Beijing for 18 years instead where she attended and graduated from an international high school.Carmen returned back to Germany for work with the intent to reconnect with her roots. However, what she hadn't anticipated was the reverse culture shock and the challenge of "fitting in" to a culture she thought she knew.Through her own experiences, Carmen seeks to share her insights on the value of relationships and the meaning of identity. She hopes to educate others about the rewarding as well as the challenging aspects of living as a multicultural third culture kid. It gave her the opportunity to develop resilience and open-mindedness while also acknowledging the struggles of identity, home, unstable environment and dealing with endless goodbyes. She lived there until she was 11 when her family was evicted from the country. After a year in the U.S., her family was reassigned to Trinidad. And she went to a boarding school on the western side of Venezuela. She and her family returned to the Chicago area of the U.S. before her junior year of high school. She stayed in the U.S. from her junior year until after college. Since then, she has lived in four other countries - Mexico, Guatemala, the Philippines, and Canada. TCKs use different methods to express their up bringing in various ways. Josué, a fellow TCK & an award-winning installation and sculpture artist, shares his story and how his upbringing deeply influences his art. Based in the New York Metropolitan area, Josué Morales Urbina is an award-winning installation and sculpture artist, whose work primarily explores transcultural displacement and dépaysement. Among frequent themes that arise in his art are a pervading sense of foreignness and the impermanence of memory, which he examines via contemplative abstract installations. These works are composed of a broad range of materials, including ordinary household objects such as, drinking straws, coffee beans, toasted white bread, rubber bands, and edible materials.The questions of foreignness in Morales Urbina’s work are rooted in his being born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and having lived across the United States as a “third culture kid” (an individual raised in a culture other than their parents'). Yet, as much as he creates to engage audiences in such explorations, Urbina’s artmaking has also afforded him the self-discovery that he, ultimately, creates art “to build a home for myself; my art practice is my home.”Morales Urbina’s career is marked by numerous accomplishments, including solo and group exhibitions in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Oregon, and Texas. An alum of the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, he has completed residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, La Napoule Art Foundation’s Résidence d'Artiste Internationale, Centrum in Washington state, GoggleWorks, Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, and a current Textile Arts Center’s TAC AIR 16. In 2023, he was recognized as a Sculpture Finalist by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and was awarded the 2024 Jersey City Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship. Morales Urbina has also served as a panelist for various residencies and grants.
