You'll have to forgive us if we're partial to Kashmir among India's trekking destinations, where trekking as an activity is on a whole other level of beauty. Kashmir is home to the legendary Tarsar Marsar trek, as well as a plethora of other breathtaking hiking trails. Tarsar, Marsar, and Sundarsar are three of the most spectacular alpine lakes on the route. The path winds its way through Kashmir's classic meadows, breathtaking high-altitude pastures, and woods and pastures. The campsites on this trek are right next to the surreal beauty of these lakes, and you'll be watched over by a vast sky studded with a million stars. You might even catch a glimpse of an arm of the Milky Way in all its stellar glory if you're lucky. Aside from the stunning landscapes, Kashmir's breathtaking mountain valleys and rustic villages can leave you speechless.Day 1 : Srinagar to Aru:You might even catch a glimpse of an arm of the Milky Way in all its stellar glory if you're lucky. Aside from the stunning landscapes, Kashmir's breathtaking mountain valleys and rustic villages can leave you speechless.Day 2 : Aru to Lidderwat:The trek starts with a short but steep climb from Aru to Lidderwat, about 10 kilometres away. The trail parallels the Ladder River, which is cool and refreshing. You can see the beautiful Aru area behind you after just a few minutes on the trail. The path soon reaches lovely fir woods and opens up to the Dalla clearing. The trail now becomes more gentle and even. The path bends through thick fir forests and the breathtaking Lidderwat meadows about 2–3 hours later. Lidderwat is a dreamy campsite where you can spend the night.Day 3 : Lidderwat to Shekwas:A day that is easy to moderate. The trail runs alongside the Lidder River and descends into the majestic pine forests. When you walk through the clump of trees, you'll be treated to stunning views. Lidderwat's vast grasslands blend in with the snow-capped mountains and misty valleys. The trail soon reaches a tapering valley with a snaking blue river and leads to the lovely Shekwas campsite.Day 4 : Shekwas to Tarsar Lake:After leaving Shekwas, continue on the path that leads up to Tarsar through a ridge with a stream. The valley can be seen from the small ridges that rise above it. After about two hours, the trail gives a brief glimpse of the beautiful Tarsar lake. After crossing a stream and passing through rugged terrain and boulders, you arrive in Tarsar's grasslands. You can either camp here or spend the night.Day 5 : Tarsar to Sundarsar:The Tarsar Pass offers many breathtaking views, and the valley stretches out in front of you. Trekking through the pass allows you to save a few hours, which is impressive. The trail that descends from the pass to the valley's bottom leads to a lush valley. After another stretch of meadows, grasslands, lakes, and boulders, you'll arrive at Sundarsar Lake's magical campsite, where you'll spend the night.Day 6 : Marsar Lake and Trek to Homwas:Sundarsar's trail extended all the way across the lake to Marsar. The one that goes over the boulders is a shorter but more challenging trail. You'll be happy you brought a trekking pole or an ice axe with you. The route soon opens up to grassy patches and passes by a few lovely brooks. The ascent soon leads to breathtaking views of Marsar, which are surrounded by cloudy haloes. The lake, which resembles Tarsar Lake in nature, is bordered on one side by beautiful mountains. You return to Sundesar Campsite from Marsar.Day 7 : Homwas to Aru; Drive to Srinagar:After a hearty breakfast, we return to Liddervat via the same path we took at the start of the trek. It's a long descent, and our route takes us past several gurgling streams and a few shepherd huts and settlements. Homwas to Liddervat takes about 2 hours, and Liddervat to Aru is a 10-kilometer walk. You then travel to Srinagar, which is about an hour away.
