Dave Wischnowsky grew up in Bourbannais, IL where he played high school sports and developed a passion for writing. After earning his degree in journalism from the University of Illinois, Dave started his career as a sportwriter in Ottawa, IL. Later he made a jump to the Chicago Tribune which was one of the largest newspapers in the United States. Dave now works in marketing full time. Neil Bresnahan committed to play basketball at the University of Illinois in 1976. Neil played high school basketball at Oak Park Fenwick High School. He was a part of Lou Henson's first recruiting class. Neil was a 6-6 Forward with skills that resemble today's European style players. Levi Cobb was born and raised on the southside of Chicago. He won a Illinois high school state basketball championship in 1976 as the star at Morgan Park High School. After high school, Levi committed to the University of Illinois and to play for Coach Lou Henson. Levi helped carve the path for many Chicago Public League kids to follow his lead and play at the University of Illinois.
Dave (Coach) Kreps coached basketball at the college and high school level for over 30 years. He also was one of the founders and operators of the American Youth Basketball Tour for 20 years. Matt Thomann was a college basketball player at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. Nadalie Walsh just completed her 6th season as the women's gymnastics coach at the University of Illinois. Prior to coming to Illinois, Coach Walsh was the head coach at UW-OshKosh, Ball State, and Utah St. Coach Walsh published a book in the summer of 2022 called Enough: A Coaches Guide to Creating the Culture Every Athlete Deserves. Pat Ryan grew up in Metamora, IL. He is in his third season as the Director of Illinois High School Relations for the Unversity of Illinois Football Program. Coach Ryan is one of the most decorated coaches in Illinois high school history. Ryan led Metamora to seven state championship games, winning two. Coach Ryan and his wife Nancy have four children, Morgan, Sam, Audrey and Erin.
Today's guest has been a long time high school basketball coach in the State of Illinois. He started his career as an assistant coach at St. Joseph-Ogden High School. From there he became the head boys coach at Villa Grove High School. Currently, he is at Bloomington Central Catholic where he just completed year 16. His 2014 team won the 2A State Championship. His 2018 team finished 3rd in State. This past season his 2023 team finished 2nd in State. A great podcast - listen to what Coach Welch says about "did we win or did we learn!"
Cully Welter was born in Urbana and raised in Mahomet, IL. Cully went to the Unversity of Illinois where he became an All American NCAA Track Athlete. He has won 4 IHSA State Football Championships and 2 other teams that were State runner-ups. He lives in Monticello with his wife Angie who also is a teacher. Robin Christian grew up in St. Louis before attending and graduating from Urbana High School in Urbana, IL. Robin now lives in Monticello, IL with his wife Cathy. He has 3 grown children. For the last 20 years, Robin has been a writer/director/producer of movies with Hollywood type talent. He owns Dreamscape Cinema. He has completed a dozen films and is currently working on two more. Robin also owns the rights to the untold story of the Beatles. This will also soon be a motion picture.
Mike Wallner is a graduate of Champaign Centennial High School. He has been the Director of Golf at the University of Illinois Golf Course for nearly 30 years. During his career Mike has seen the ups and downs in the golf business. He has been a tremendous promoter of public golf. Also, Mike supports the high school golf scene as a willing host of many high school tournaments each Fall. I hope you enjoy his story!
Kevin Roy grew up near Effingham Illinois. He attended and graduated from Neoga High School where he was a 2 year varsity basketball starter. Kevin went on to play college basketball for 2 years at Lakeland College. Kevin teaches at Monticello High School and has been the head varsity boys basketball coach for 17 years. During those years Kevin has had great success including 2 Final Four state appearances. I hope you enjoy Kevin's story about his path.
Andy Dixon graduated from Champaign Central High School where he was an All-State Running Back. Andy accepted a scholarship from the University of Wyoming where he played 4 years of varsity football including being named team captain. Andy returned to Champaign and took a job as the University of Illinois Football Equipment Manager for 29 1/2 years. His story is fantastic! Enjoy!
Lon Tay has been in tv and radio broadcasting for over 30 years. He and I sat down for over 2 hours on "Tea or Coffee". Lon's sports radio show on WSJK is now in its 13 year. Currently it is called "The Drive with Tay and Piper and airs from 4-6pm daily. If you enjoy hearing some great stories, both about personal events and sports, you will love listening to this podcast.
Today I got the opportunity to chat with Kevin Feeney. Kevin has a great story to tell..........After graduating from Monticello H.S. in 2007. Kevin went on to Xavier University in Cincinnatti, OH. Kevin majored in business and also was on the Xavier University Basketball Team. Kevin now owns Burgess and Cline Insurance. Kevin and his family live in Monticello, IL
Dan takes us down his path. After graduating from Monticello High School in 2002, Dan went on to earn a doctorate in pharmacy at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 2008. Dan has been the Head Boys Soccer Coach at Monticello High School in Monticello, IL since 2013. He is also a pharmacist at Kirby Hospital in Monticello, IL. Dan is married and has 3 children ages 11 to 5.
Jeremy Clodfelder knew from a young age that he wanted to be a coach! He currently is the Head Football Coach at Paris High School. His path has included being a part of Ron Zook's staff at the University of Illinois. He has also had the opportunity to work with some of the best high school coaches in the state. Coach Clodfelder continues to coach and also enjoys speaking on positive leadership. I hope you enjoy Coach Clodfelder's story!
