As the number of students designated as Multilingual Learners (MLs) continues to grow, educators must think critically about how best to support them. This hands-on guide introduces critical advocacy and explores how its effectiveness is tied to educators’ critical awareness of themselves, their broader political contexts, and their daily school-based work with MLs.
The authors use a tree metaphor to represent the importance of roots (identities, beliefs, and ideologies); the trunk (core critical advocacy beliefs); branches (areas of critical advocacy action); and off-shoots and leaves (local critical advocacy action). Throughout, there are features such as Voices From the Field and Digging In, which invite readers to consider concepts from the text in their own lives, contexts, and practices. At the end of the book, the authors provide a Critical Advocacy Action Planning Tool to help readers plan for critical advocacy in their own context.
Whether you already see yourself as an advocate or are new to this work, this book will help you develop a critical advocacy stance and cultivate the practices and dispositions needed to engage in meaningful, sustainable, and effective advocacy with and for MLs in your school, classroom, and community.

Overcoming Tragedy: The core of the book is woven together by the memory of a student named Nancy, whose tragic passing inspired Bitner to write down these stories.
Bilingual Format: The book features the full text in both English and Spanish within the exact same volume.
Core Message: It teaches readers that knowing a second language is a valuable superpower and asset, not a weakness. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Strategic by Design: The Blueprint for ML Programs by Dr. Marie Heath (published via Seidlitz Education) provides a comprehensive framework for building, evaluating, and sustaining effective educational programming for multilingual learners (MLs). Rather than treating language acquisition as an isolated classroom responsibility, Dr. Heath argues that student progress is driven by intentional, systemic design. The book highlights how common system stress points limit student growth and offers a practical blueprint built around six interconnected pillars: Compliance & Data: Aligning program tracking and legal mandates with meaningful data analysis to accurately measure student progress and program efficacy. Curriculum & Instruction: Creating accessible, language-infused, and academically rigorous learning pathways tailored to diverse linguistic needs. Staffing: Strategically placing and supporting qualified educators, specialists, and co-teaching teams to maximize student support. Professional Learning: Building continuous, targeted training for all educators—not just language specialists—to foster a school-wide culture of academic literacy. Family & Community Engagement: Creating authentic bridges between home and school cultures, valuing families as key partners in the educational ecosystem. Pathways to Graduation: Designing clear, actionable structures that ensure long-term academic success, graduation equity, and viable post-secondary opportunities for multilingual students.
