This time of year your email inbox gets filled with invoices, receipts, and shipping notifications more than any other time. Because of that, you are much more likely to receive SPAM and other bogus emails that are 'phishing' you to click on links and provide information to inappropriate actors."Phishing is the activity of defrauding an online account holder of financial information by posing as a legitimate company." You should always be paying attention to links and attachments in any email you click on but especially around this time of year. Since you are expecting many packages and spending much more money, it is probable you will be much more likely to fall victim to malicious links or attachments in holiday season phishing attempts. In this quick episode, we discuss a few quick tips on avoiding falling for the scams that will get you sharing too much information to the wrong people. Here is a link to the Inc.com article I reference in this episode: 6 Holiday Season Email ScamsWe also mention some great Snapchat feature enhancements you can learn about here and take advantage of this holiday season.A quick note, we are done with full episodes for 2016. We will see you in the New Year starting January 5th.Happy Holidays!====================================================For show notes and videos about this weeks episode or to request future topics please visit https://technicallylivingpodcast.comReceive episode notes, links to resources mentioned and exclusive information not mentioned in episodes by joining The Technically Living Newsletter or the Technically Living Facebook Page.To connect with Ross Wickman visit any of these links:Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | SnapchatYou can listen and subscribe to Technically Living here:iTunes | Overcast | Stitcher | Google Play | ACast | RSSMusic: bensound.com
Last week we had the amazing opportunity to travel to Las Vegas for the Amazon Web Services (AWS) re:Invent Conference where across 3 casinos there was training, workshops, certifications and so much more. All the sessions and training were specific to one of the many offerings Amazon has in their AWS package. It was hard to really get the most out of the conference cause there was so much information to learn and sessions to attend. In this week's episode, we just skim the surface of a few services that you in your personal/family life or small business could take advantage of. There are so many to pick from so we talk about Cloud computing and Storage. In future episodes we will take some time to dig into the many other offerings and what you could do with them as well as what we here at the podcast and Comrade Technology for what we can offer you.If you have any questions about AWS offerings, what we talk about in this weeks episode, or any other cloud platform, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss how you can take advantage of the cloud. If you are already working in the cloud, AWS, or are interested post in the comments and share your stories and questions. We look forward to hearing from you and helping any way we can. Travel can be stressful. There are hundreds of apps you could use to manage agendas, trip itineraries, and sight-seeing plans. I just spent the week in Las Vegas at AWS re:Invent (more on that later) and I used 5 apps to keep my trip organized and know where I needed to go and what I should be doing for nightlife. The 5 apps I briefly discuss are:Google Maps (Directions)Google Trips (Ticketing, Reservations, and Planning)Credntia (Identification, Rewards, Credit Cards)TickTick (Checklist, Organization)Social Location Apps (Activities, Dining, Attractions)FoursquareSwarmYelpTrip AdvisorGoogle LocalThere are many more tools for keeping all of your travel plans organized but I find these 5 to be the best 5 by far. What apps do you use for travel planning and enjoyment? Comment in the notes to share your travel tips and apps.====================================================For show notes and videos about this weeks episode or to request future topics please visit https://technicallylivingpodcast.comReceive episode notes, links to resources mentioned and exclusive information not mentioned in episodes by joining The Technically Living Newsletter or the Technically Living Facebook Page.To connect with Ross Wickman visit any of these links:Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | SnapchatYou can listen and subscribe to Technically Living here:iTunes | Overcast | Stitcher | Google Play | ACast | RSSMusic: bensound.com
Video is getting it's second wind. 'Is getting' is already a little past-tense but Snapchat (or Snap Inc.) is taking it to a new level and they are doing what Google failed to do. And that is make wearable technology cool and fashionable.I don't even have my hands on them yet and I am ridiculously impresses with the feedback and press Snapchat's Spectacles are getting. I cannot wait to get a pair of my own. It is hard to tell what I would actually use them for but I think that is the point. Getting short 10 second clips of some of the most candid moments quickly and easily opens the door for many opportunities.   Please keep posted as we find a way to get a pair quickly and affordably. In the meantime, I take some time this episode to challenge you to find what it is you want to do in 2017 to get yourself to a better place. Maybe you don't have something you are interesting in building right now but you might know someone who is and has some questions or needs a little push. Please lead them to us. We want to do everything we can to help them get started using technology in their lives to build their business, share their thoughts, or more on their big idea. For more info on Spectacles check out: https://www.spectacles.com/Looking to get your hands on a pair? Imagine for a moment your computer never getting a virus or bogus software installed. Imagine buying a brand new computer on Black Friday or Cyber Monday and 5 years from now it running almost as good as the day you bought it.Sounds lofty right? Well, it is possible. It is possible to run your computer, keep it secure, and never get a virus without ever needing to buy Anti-Virus software. I still recommend running some form of protection but you should never have to pay for it on your home computer. The free stuff works just fine with this solution in place. In this week's episode, I talk about THE ONE THING you can do this weekend to make your computer more secure for your entire family. No one thing will keep you 100% safe but this is hands-down the biggest step you can take for being safe and secure on your computer(s).Comrade Technology PostThe Statistics on Removing Admin RightsHome of Future Technically Living Online Training Courses====================================================For show notes and videos about this weeks episode or to request future topics please visit https://technicallylivingpodcast.comReceive episode notes, links to resources mentioned and exclusive information not mentioned in episodes by joining The Technically Living Newsletter or the Technically Living Facebook Page.To connect with Ross Wickman visit any of these links:Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | SnapchatYou can listen and subscribe to Technically Living here:iTunes | Overcast | Stitcher | Google Play | ACast | RSSMusic: bensound.com

If you don't take the steps now, once it happens the only option you have is to pay or say goodbye to everything stored on your computer. But I have a backup...Sorry. If you're not moving forward, you're moving backward; and my friends, I am happy to announce in this episode that we are moving forward. If you are listening or reading right now, the podcast has a new home at https://technicallylivingpodcast.comThis is a big part of the reason I do not have a full episode for you this week. The other part is we are working with some partnerships and sponsorships to keep the podcast moving forward. In order to really keep moving, I need you to share with more people. You've done great so far but I could use a little push. From this episode release to Thanksgiving, I am running a contest to see which listener can get the most people to subscribe to the Technically Living Newsletter. What's in it for you?I will give $25 dollars Amazon Cash to the person who has the most newsletter referrals. Then the first 15 of those referrals will all get $5 Amazon Cash as well. All you need to do is forward this post to them, have them go here: http://rwick.it/tlpnewsletter and put your email in the Referral Block.Once they are subscribed to the newsletter, they can be in the contest as well. This podcast is for you and growing because of you. On October 23rd, 2016 "Half the Internet" went offline. The Cause?- Insecure Internet-connected devices designed to make your life more connected and convenient. This connected mesh of little miscellaneous devices is also known as the "Internet of Things" or (IoT) for short.How?- Malware that searches the internet for these devices was configured to send endless traffic to DNS Service Provider Dyn. The traffic disrupted the lookup information for many popular website on the web. This week's episode breaks down how, why, and what we can do (if anything) to prevent this from happening again in the future.SPOILER ALERT!- NOT A DAMN THING CAN BE DONE TO PREVENT THE FROM HAPPENING.These attacks are only going to get worse, more frequent, and completely disrupt our critical infrastructure in the near future. More about the attack:'The Pearl Harbor of the Internet'List of major sites affectedWhere did this come fromWhy is this so scary?==================================================== For show notes and videos about this weeks episode or to request future topics please visit https://technicallylivingpodcast.comReceive episode notes, links to resources mentioned and exclusive information not mentioned in episodes by joining The Technically Living Newsletter. To connect with Ross Wickman visit any of these links:Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | SnapchatYou can listen and subscribe to Technically Living here:iTunes | Overcast | Stitcher | Google Play | RSSMusic: bensound.com
'IT' happened again. Not because of this week's episode (at least I don't think so) but a big piece of the internet went unresponsive today because of systems with bad or default password configurations. Way more information than I can share in one episode but that is why we are here.We are here to break down all the pieces that can cause such a mass orchestrated attack and help protect you from them as much as possible. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do about what happened yesterday but you can prevent your home devices from taking part in the attacks. ==================================================== For show notes and videos about this weeks episode or to request future topics please visit https://technicallylivingpodcast.comReceive episode notes, links to resources mentioned and exclusive information not mentioned in episodes by joining The Technically Living Newsletter. To connect with Ross Wickman visit any of these links:Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | SnapchatYou can listen and subscribe to Technically Living here:iTunes | Overcast | Stitcher | Google Play | RSSMusic: bensound.com
As an individual you might wonder “Why would someone want my information?” or “What could a hacker get out of having access to my account?” The truth is, it’s nothing personal 99% of the time. Nefarious people (hackers) might find your information as a result of a recent breach of a major service provider or they may be targeting an organization through a Phishing Campaign, Social Engineering or a vulnerable website. The damage that can be done with a single set of usernames and passwords is paramount. In this week's episode, I run down a few reasons why it's more than just access to an account you have and share some tips and tools to help you generate better passwords.Password metershttps://password.kaspersky.com/https://howsecureismypassword.net/Hacked/Affected account lookuphttps://password.kaspersky.com/https://haveibeenpwned.com/https://breachalarm.com/Used to show how easy it would be to hack other accounts if you use the same password everywherehttps://namechk.com/https://namecheck.com/Password Keepers & Creation Toolshttps://lastpass.com/https://www.dashlane.com/https://1password.com/ Historical Password Postsveryone needs a change sometimes - Comrade Technology April 2014 It's Time to Go Green - Comrade Technology July 2015==================================================== For show notes and videos about this weeks episode or to request future topics please visit https://technicallylivingpodcast.comReceive episode notes, links to resources mentioned and exclusive information not mentioned in episodes by joining The Technically Living Newsletter. To connect with Ross Wickman visit any of these links:Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | SnapchatYou can listen and subscribe to Technically Living here:iTunes | Overcast | Stitcher | Google Play | RSSMusic: bensound.com
