We present to you a special International Woman’s Day Edition of Texx Talks! This special episode we are talking to an Afro-soul singer and songwriter who has a voice that commands the attention of any room that she is in.  Born and raised in the Eastern Cape, this hard-working musical force blends soul with modern pop and traditional folk elements to create songs that have made her a household name and, that have consistently landed her on the most streamed South African artist lists across streaming services. Preferring to keep her own company, Ami Faku dives deep into dealing with loss, how one day she found out she had died and how all of this is only just the beginning. Outro Song:  Lala Ngoxolo feat. Portugal. The Man is a Grammy-winning band that fuses elements of psychedelia and classic rock, with a dash of modern pop and a willingness to experiment, and founding member and bassist, Zachary Carothers, isn’t shy to admit it was all a bit of a fluke at first.   Not ones to shy away from speaking their mind, both on and off their records, their last album was responsible for a song that became omnipresent the world over (“Feel It Still”) and became such an earworm, you never got tired of hearing it. From growing up in Alaska, to the effect of moving to Portland on the band’s trajectory, to falling in love with South Africa after their 2015 tour opened their eyes to the beauty of the country, Zach speaks candidly about all the places he’s been and the places he’s planning on going as he’s getting older. Sun-El Musician is a producer and DJ who, over the course of the last half-a-decade, has given us some of South Africa’s most beloved dance anthems, and has introduced us to a whole host of vocalists on his rich compositions, that have gone on to become national earworms.  With his latest, mammoth, 31-track album that fuses traditional and futuristic elements into complete electronic sounds, it serves as a continuation of his debut album and focuses on telling a story of healing, and hope, through dance music. From his early roots in rural Natal to discovering his love of dance music while at University, the mythos of Sun-El Musician has grown, going above and beyond. Shane Durrant is the frontman of Desmond and the Tutus, the Pretorian DIY indie-rock band that spearheaded an entire scene in South Africa. Known for their unique style of indie-rock and outlandish onstage antics, just as well as they are for their left-field name, the Tutus burst onto a scene that was more concerned with mainstream rock, ultimately finding a home on MK89 and an audience amongst a growing underground twenty-something community. Rooted in strong kwela melodies and a DIY indie-punk attitude, they spearheaded an entire new wave of underground bands - from Oppikoppi to Osaka, Japan - and Shane explains their unconventional path to owning the moniker of “three time award-losing” band.    Outro Song: Hard Work Apple Music Spotify YouTube Featured Tracks: Teenager - Desmond and the Tutus Apple Music Spotify  Lazy Bones - Desmond and the Tutus Apple Music Spotify YouTube Peter - Desmond and the Tutus Apple Music Spotify YouTube What Am I Gonna Do With You - Desmond and the Tutus Apple Music Spotify YouTube   MASSIVE shout out to Desmond and the Tutus for the generous use of their music and support in bringing this podcast to life.
