Nai Palm is the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist of Hiatus Kaiyote, the progressive neo-soul group from Melbourne, Australia who make music that is, in their own words, “multidimensional, polyrhythmic gangster shit.” As the first Australian band nominated for a Grammy Award in an R&B category, this self-termed “future soul band” gradually won support from a wide array of taste-making DJs and industry peers and the list of artists who have sampled their music will make you weep. On this episode Nai chats about her hard, formative childhood, the emotional rollercoaster of getting validation from iconic artists, and getting back into the studio to write that long-awaited third album.  OUTRO TRACK: Chivalry is Not Dead  Apple Music Spotify  Set List:  Mobius Streak - Apple Music Spotify  The World it Softly Lulls - Apple Music Spotify  Homebody - Apple Music Spotify  Fingerprints - Apple Music Spotify  Borderline with my Atoms -  Apple Music Spotify  Malika - Apple Music Spotify Get Sun - Apple Music Spotify The Lung - Apple Music Spotify  Red Room- Apple Music Spotify  Massive shout out to Hiatus Kaiyote for the time to chat and the generous use of their music in bringing this pod to life. Jacques Moolman is arguably South Africa’s best rock vocalist, high praise - maybe - but once you’ve heard this man’s unmistakable voice, it’s rather difficult to forget it.  Recently embarking on a solo career and releasing his debut album The Great Valley Redemption that’s a blend of old school blues rock and, we would be very surprised if he doesn’t walk away with a SAMA for Best Rock Album in 2022. From his growing up between South Africa and The Ilse of Wight, to his formative musical years as the lead singer of Shadowclub, Jacques has always sought to find the extraordinary in the mundane, while, like any creative genius, ensures that he makes sure even the most beautiful output is fraught with self sabotage. Muzi is one of the most talked about South African musicians on the scene currently, with co-signs from Chris Martin, Damon Albarn and Stormzy, he has worked tirelessly to become one of the first names that comes to mind when thinking about modern African music. With his heritage and family at the root of every creative move that he makes, he expertly blends together cutting edge urban and electronic music with local genres like Maskandi, Kwaito, and Bumblegum Pop of the 80s and 90s, to craft a sound that is entirely his own. If you pay extra careful attention: we have a little treat for you next episode! Without further ado: Nasty C is a multi award-winning rapper who, despite growing up in Durban, the home of kwaito, house and gqom, carved a different path for himself in hip hop.  This path ultimately saw him become the youngest ever recipient of an award at the SA Hip Hop Awards in 2015, release a triple-platinum selling album in 2018, and ultimately go on to sign to a historic deal with Def Jam Records in early 2020.  Having toured 32 new markets last year alone, this trailblazer has a knack for filling up arenas and dominating the stage, and at only 23-year-old he is undisputedly the voice of a new generation with a third hit album (A Zulu Man With Some Power), mini-documentary (Origins) and a Netflix special (Zulu Man in Japan) under his belt in 2020 so far. Portugal. The Man is a Grammy-winning band that fuses elements of psychedelia and classic rock, with a dash of modern pop and a willingness to experiment, and founding member and bassist, Zachary Carothers, isn’t shy to admit it was all a bit of a fluke at first.   Not ones to shy away from speaking their mind, both on and off their records, their last album was responsible for a song that became omnipresent the world over (“Feel It Still”) and became such an earworm, you never got tired of hearing it. From growing up in Alaska, to the effect of moving to Portland on the band’s trajectory, to falling in love with South Africa after their 2015 tour opened their eyes to the beauty of the country, Zach speaks candidly about all the places he’s been and the places he’s planning on going as he’s getting older.
