That Emotional Crap

Countless people have a hard time with their emotions. On average, we can only identify three emotions while in their grips; happy, sad, and angry. This is detrimental to our relationships, ourselves, and even our mental wellbeing.

In this podcast, our goal is to shrink the gap between what we experience and how we talk about emotions. Together we will build a new understanding of our deep emotional world. Learn to recognize, use, understand, and ultimately grow our emotional repertoire. To go from being able to recognize three emotions to so many more!

Join Matthew and together learn the value and benefits of getting to know That Emotional Crap.

Emotional Bandwidth

Are you familiar with your emotional bandwidth? If not there is no better time than now to get familiar. I have found this to be a great value as I have learned when I need to step away. We became comfortable with knowing our limits and how to better enforce boundaries.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/that-emotional-crap/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Metal Meditation: Calming the Mind

In our first in what is going to be a continuous series of heavy metal-inspired meditations is a short breathing exercise. The goal is to help try to quiet the mind. We spend ten minutes together focused on our breath and the music. In this episode Chad Rohrbaugh, our music producer, has what he calls Viking metal for us. I found it very calming when I first sat with it. What you will hear during this is what I was telling myself to do during this time.I hope you enjoy our first attempt at Metal Meditation. There are more to come. Next one is scheduled for 9/26/22. Until then let us know what you think in the comments here or on the website.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/that-emotional-crap/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Motivation and Self Discipline

Getting familiar with what motivates us is extremely important. We see it all the time in countless self-help memes. They all mean well but I have always felt they missed the mark a bit. After all, do we know what "motivation" is? And if we do, how do we take that motivation and apply it so we can use it? What about self-discipline, is that important, or do we just need motivation? For such a seemingly simple idea, "just find your motivation and you can succeed," it is filled with so many questions. It is my hope in today's episode we start to understand the power and strength we gain in understanding these ideas. That they are not just some self-help guru crap that has no value, like snake oil from the past. But real, valuable skills we can use! We can take motivation and self-discipline with us to grow even farther than we thought possible. At least that's my hope! Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/that-emotional-crap/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Distinguishing Between Emotions

Before we get into this deep and exciting world of emotions we need a solid base. A common ground to start from so we are, at least some what, on the same page. To be able to at least be able to know four emotions by the time we are done.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/that-emotional-crap/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Anger and Bipolar Disorder

Talking to my new psychologist she said something that blew me away. I never knew that bipolar disorder can present with rage in the manic phase! Right! Maybe you knew that but that is news to me. I had to look over my past and find some articles on this idea. Have you experienced this? Do you have people in your life you can reach out to with trust and vulnerability? If not I am willing to be your safe place to share and talk without judgment. Please stop telling people that it is just as simple as “all you have to do is choose to be happy!” This is dangerous and damaging to people. Apology Paralysis

Make an apology that is meaningful. If in your words you still blame “others” it is not going to be heard. Find a way to take ownership of your part without negating the experience of others. There is a great deal of power in a simple “I'm sorry.” Don't get hung up on being right, or showy. Once you realize your mistake take ownership, say sorry, and move on. Music is original and produced by Chad Rohrbaugh at Rohr Sound Studios.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/that-emotional-crap/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

To Be Human

Chrissy and Matthew sit down to catch up on the last year and a half or more. They have both seen major changes. The biggest one is in how Matthew was able to bring the walls down. Open up emotionally and share his vulnerability with her. Now we join him and Chrissy, sometimes, as he dives deeper into his emotional self. They Are All Human

In today's bonus episode, I talk about how we have to train ourselves to see everyone as another person. I know it seems odd but how often do you road rage on the "car" in front of you. Give that driver back their humanity and watch the road rage melt away. Well kinda, it helps to build empathy for all those around us. The Value of Vulnerability

As men, we are taught that to be venerable is to be weak. It is not manly to cry or share your emotional life. When we allow ourselves to open up we can finally be open to living in freedom.Never mind, I had a plan for this episode and it just didn't work. So instead you're getting me, vulnerable and open. What better way to have an episode on vulnerability than to just be. I share some stories that occurred this week that knocked me back a few steps.Music is original and produced by Chad Rohrbaugh at Rohr Sound Studios.Huge thanks to Podcorn for sponsoring this episode. Great distinction between cause and stimulus. One is the start point and the other is fuel being added in an already burning furnace. If it's already burning, it's already a problem. We often get the two mixed up as a way of escaping our responsibility in how we release our emotions on an often unsuspecting world. I'm responsible for how my emotions are released. Nobody else.

That's fine but what are better ways to let go rather than counting to 10 and breathing as you said, doesn't work. What will work?

Well constructed episode and a VERY different perspective on expressions of anger.

I can relate to a lot of things in this podcast as I too struggled in the past with setting unrealistic expectations upon certain people in my life. It caused some fractures that still haven't gone away to this day. But they have been necessary to teach me how no one person or situation is ever going to be capable of meeting needs I have.
