In the wake of the strike that ended the 1994 season, MLB needed something to bring fans back to the ballpark...and that's just what they got in 1998 when Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Ken Griffey Jr chased Roger Maris' single-season home run record. McGwire came out on top, but fans were the real winners during the summer that saved baseball.
The 1994 MLB season was shaping up to be a great one. But then it all came to a screeching halt when the players went on strike. The league cancelled the rest of the season...including the World Series. And even though the strike was resolved in time for the 1995 season...the damage was already done.
When the Boston Red Sox fell behind 0-3 to the rival Yankees in the 2004 ALCS, all seemed lost for them and their fans. Instead, the Red Sox pulled off arguably the greatest comeback in sports history by winning the next 4 games and becoming the first team in baseball history to win a best-of-7 series after trailing 0-3. Spurred by their victory, the Red Sox went on to win their first World Series Championship in 86 years.
