This week, I’m joined by outdoor writer and long-time mountain adventurer Meg Atteberry for a raw, behind-the-scenes look at what really happens when you have to hit the SOS button in the backcountry. On day six of a seven-day high route in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, Meg and her friend found themselves in a true emergency — an injury miles from any trail, shifting weather, complex alpine terrain, and a 20-hour Search and Rescue operation that forced them to rely on every ounce of their experience, preparation, and mental steadiness. This conversation is honest, gripping, and packed with trail-tested insight. If you’ve ever wondered “How would I actually handle something like this?” — or you want to feel more prepared and self-reliant on your own trips — this episode is a must-listen.In This Episode, You’ll Learn:The exact moment Meg realized they needed Search & RescueHow she made the call early and why that decision matteredWhat the terrain, weather, and rescue logistics were really likeHow they chose a safe camp to overnight during the emergencyThe mental rollercoaster of staying calm when adrenaline crashesWhy preparation beats “toughing it out” every timeThe gear, systems, and decisions that made a real differenceWhat most people don’t understand about wilderness rescuesMeg’s biggest takeaways now that she’s had time to reflectHow to Connect with Meg:Connect with Meg Atteberry on Instagram and TikTok @megintheforestResources Mentioned:YouTube Video: I hit the Garmin InReach SOS Button and here's what I learnedYouTube Video: How I Was Rescued by Helicopter on the Wind River High Route (4k)YouTube Video: I hit the Garmin InReach SOS Button and here's what I learnedYouTube Video: What Happens When You Push the SOS Button on Your Garmin InReach MiniWhere to learn more about Allison:She Dreams of Alpine BlogInstagram @shedreamsofalpine🎁 FREE GIFT: Grab the Outdoor Backpacker Starter Kit for FREE here to get started on your journey with backpacking.🥾 BACKPACKING COURSE WAITLIST: This is our signature program where we teach you how to become a safe, confident, and self-sufficient backpacker. Today’s episode is a special one because we’re celebrating what’s possible in your very first year of backpacking. I’m joined by one of our Backpacking Badass students, Victoria, who joined the program during last year’s Black Friday enrollment… and since then, has completely transformed her outdoor life. Before the program, Victoria had only gone on one beginner overnight with her husband. One year later, she’s planned and led her own 3-day trip in the Eastern Sierra, gone on multiple solo backpacking adventures in Yosemite, the Eastern Sierra, and Zion, and built a brand-new identity around bravery, self-trust, and capability. In this episode, we talk about:What it was like to begin backpacking at 48The moment she realized she could camp and backpack aloneHow she navigated pre-trip anxiety, fear, and “what ifs”What surprised her most on her first big tripThe mindset tools that helped her keep going when things got toughHow her confidence has grown through both summit moments and turnaround momentsHer plans for future adventures (including the JMT!)Victoria’s story shows how much is possible when you stop waiting for the perfect circumstances and start building the skills, confidence, and self-trust to create your own adventures.Backpacking Badass Black Friday Enrollment is NOW OPEN! If you’re ready to become a confident, self-sufficient backpacker in 2026—this is the moment. The moody weather made the Scottish highlands feel extra dramatic, but the miles flew by—until a final soaking just before check-in.Then it was time to lean into hotel luxury: a hot meal, a robe, a surprise gin and tonic setup, and yes, the awkward joy of eating dinner solo in a fancy restaurant. In this episode:Easy trail miles and good conversationMisty mountain views and a final mile downpourChecking into a posh hotel with hiker funkReflections on solo dinners, wet clothes & cultural quirks🎧 Hit play for a soft landing after a fast solo hiking day on the West Highland Way.Where to learn more about Allison:She Dreams of Alpine BlogInstagram @shedreamsofalpine🎁 FREE GIFT: Grab the Outdoor Backpacker Starter Kit for FREE here to get started on your journey with backpacking.🥾 BACKPACKING COURSE WAITLIST: This is our signature program where we teach you how to become a safe, confident, and self-sufficient backpacker.
