Today, The Alt-Country Show premieres the music video for "Chicken Flew the Coop" from Ben Stalets. The track is on his forthcoming album, Everybody’s Laughing. The new album drops on August 27th.
Ben filled us in a little on the song, the video and his upcoming album. Don't miss out on the video because there is a chicken man and you can't go wrong with a chicken man.
Watch the video below and you'll hear a track from Ben Stalets kicking off the mix as well.
[youtubelg]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm9kLm7VfQI[/youtubelg]
On the Song:
“I thought we had fleshed this song one out on the road. Pretty simple in theory. When we got in the studio, we recorded the base tracks and It sounded good, but my producer, Bunky Hunt, knew it was missing some guitar and pedal steel parts. It ended up sounding a lot more full that way. I’m grateful I trusted him.”
On the Video:
“Marco North came up with the idea for the video. He hit me up with, “love the song, would like to do something with a chicken man” and I totally agreed. It turned out great and I love it.”
On the Album:
“This album was a turning point for me in every sense of the phrase. It was a turning point for me as an artist. I could write how I felt without losing myself in the words. It also felt like the band really came together on this album. There are some songs that don’t have the full band, but for the majority of it, it’s us. We started figuring out our sound finally. This record is like Ben Stalets becoming Ben Stalets. It feels like my first album even though I’ve had others.”

"Today, The Alt-Country Show premieres the scenic, DIY music video for "Parkway Bound." The song can be found on North Carolina artist, Shay Martin Lovette's sophomore release, Scatter & Gather. The album dropped on May 14th and is produced by Joseph Terrell of Mipso. Beautiful arrangements showcase Lovette's crisp vocals and punctuate his songwriting.
[youtubelg]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UILkszuP0p4[/youtubelg]
Lovette tells us a little bit about the making of the video, recording "Parkway Bound" for the album, and Scatter & Gather as a whole.
On the idea behind the video:
"I’m super excited to share this video, especially because it was a 100% DIY affair and the footage was captured on iPhones. My partner, Julianna Liegel captured most of the footage and Joseph Terrell, Gabe Anderson, and I filmed the rest. Gabe Anderson also edited the video. The idea for this video was pretty straight forward. “Parkway Bound” was written around the concept of someone leaving their troubles behind and escaping to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I am lucky enough to live less than a mile from the parkway, and have spent countless hours enjoying the mountains, trails, and creeks that can be found in the region so it felt natural to give the video a sort of “day in the life” type vibe. My good friend, Joseph Terrell (Mipso) who produced Scatter & Gather, drove his Jeep Comanche to Boone, North Carolina (where I’m based) and we hit the Blue Ridge Parkway for a full day of cruising to different scenic overlooks, rambling down trails, eating biscuits, and rock hopping to various waterfalls in the area. By the end of the day we were exhausted but as we watched the sun disappear behind the Blue Ridge Mountains we were thankful for the journey."
On the making of the song with Joseph:
"'Parkway Bound' was recorded live at the Rubber Room Studio in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with my dream string band accompanying me and taking this tune to a beautifully folky place. Joseph Terrell (Mipso) sang harmony vocals, Aaron Ballance played Dobro, Libby Rodenbough (Mipso) played Fiddle, Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse) played mandolin, and Wood Robinson (Mipso) played upright bass. We only played the song twice and the second take was the keeper!"
On the album:
"Scatter & Gather is a collection of songs that I wrote on acoustic guitar at home in Boone, North Carolina and then fleshed out in the studio with members of Mipso, my band, and some very talented special guests like Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse). I had so much fun in the studio kicking ideas around with Joseph Terrell until each song got to a place that we both could be excited about. Joseph and I both have backgrounds in roots music but embrace the idea of experimenting with those roots so it was our goal to let both aspects shine through on this album."

"Best of the best of the best on BTR's Alt-Country Show this year! I'm spinning all of my favorite tunes from 2020 today.
For one reason or another, these are the ones that stood out. These artists were my friends through quarantine. They helped me escape from feeling trapped in my house and they made 2020 bearable.
I personally supported every artist on this list by buying their music, merch or both in 2020. I hope that if you are able, you will find at least one artist in this mix (or more) and show your support as well. It’s been a tough year for artists, especially those that rely on income from touring.
NOTE: On this episode I talk about how I'm not an obsessive Bob Dylan fan. I was speaking off-the-cuff and trying to be funny. I want to clarify that I am very much a fan of Bob Dylan. I've spent most of my young-adult and adult life obsessing over new music (due to this job). I haven't taken the time to obsess over Dylan... yet. But, believe me, it's on the list. That said, I'm still very aware of his impact, talents and legacy.

"Starting the show with new music from John Calvin Abney and his album Familiar Ground, which drops next week on Black Mesa Records. Also in the first set, the third single from Pearl Charles and her forthcoming release, Magic Mirror. It's such a good one!
Malin Pettersen makes her Alt-Country Show debut and starts off the second set of tunes with her track "Hometown" from her album Wildhorse, which is out now. Also in the set, I continue my obsession with Australicana tunes and feature a track from Magpie Diaries out of Australia!
The good tunes continue with music from Jeremy Ivey's new album, Waiting Out The Storm which is available now from ANTI- Records. I've got a double-dose of Jeremy Ivey tunes and I'll tell you about his recent show in Nashville with Country Westerns.
Later in the show, a new tune from Strays Don't Sleep and their first release in 15 years! The EP is called 'A Short Film for a Long Story' and you'll definitely want to add it to your collection!
There's so much more in the mix as well. Please, find an album you love and support the artists by buying their albums or some merch. It's so important to buy music and support the artists you love, especially at this time!

"The Alt-Country Show is completely dedicated to Aussie artists today! That's because the scene there is insane! You'll be blown away at the talent on this show. Today's episode isn't even a complete picture as there are many artists I wasn't able to get permission from in time for the episode to go live. But, I hope to feature them in the very near future! Learn a little about some of the artists in today's mix below. As always, click those links and show your support by purchasing their music and merch. It's more important than ever to support your favorite musicians!
Caitlin Harnett & the Pony Boys - This group out of Sydney was one of my recent finds and part of the reason I fell down a rabbit hole of Australian tunes. I fell in love with Caitlin Harnett and co. the first time I heard them. Based on the two singles they've released this year, I cannot wait for their album which is due out in November. Caitlin was kind enough to give me some suggestions on artists for this mix as well!
Alex the Astronaut - You may have heard Alex the Astronaut on The BTR Top 10 recently! The BTR staff has been spinning her album 'The Theory of Absolutely Nothing' quite a bit! And, now she's an ARIA nominee! Alex is nominated for Breakthrough Artist of 2020. Past winners include Silverchair, Jet, Wolfmother, Ladyhawke, Tones and I, and more.
James Thomson - Newcastle based artist, James Thomson really drew me in with the lyrics on his album 'Golden Exile' which dropped in March of this year. I got some Jeff Tweedy vibes and I could totally envision myself at one of his shows having a singalong with the rest of his fans.
Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes - The Melbourne based group released an awesome 7in single in May and their fifth studio album is due out later this year. We'll definitely keep up with this group and bring you some of that new music here on the show!
Ruben Neeson - Ruben Neeson has dropped a couple of singles in 2020 and we are loving both of them! Pick them up on his Bandcamp page and we'll keep an eye out for more new tunes as well.
All Our Exes Live in Texas - OG BTR Alt-Country! So, We had to include them. All Our Exes did a special live set with BTR back in 2017. I've been spinning KIT (Katie Wighton) from All Our Exes on Ladies Skate Only and have loved all of the singles she's dropped this year.
Madeline Leman & The Desert Swells - This group out of Melbourne got me hooked with their 2018 album 'Diva With The Fever of Change.' And, I've gotten lost in their latest release ‘Nobody’s Fool’ multiple times since coming across it on Bandcamp recently.
Gerogia State Line - Fronted by Georgia Delves, this group had plans to release their debut album this year but... covid. Luckily we have the dreamy single that's on today's mix. And, we'll keep you in the loop when the album drops.
Dave Favours & the Roadside Ashes - The group's album ‘Not Your Average Country Band’ dropped in April of this year. Dave Favours not only makes incredible tunes with The Roadside Ashes but he helped supply quite a few artists in today's mix as well, through his label Stanley Records! He also released the "Take Me To Town" compilation that I reference in the show and where you can find Katie Brianna's tack "Sticks & Stones."
Katie Brianna - Her voice is strong but soothing and I fell in love on the first note. Our eyes and ears are open and ready for anything she releases.
Ben Leece - Is a Newcastle based, Americana singer-songwriter and he's got us hooked. He just released a new single called "Magpie" which you'll have to check out and you'll hear another recent single of his "Paper Thin" in today's mix.
JB Patterson - His new album 'Young Man For A While' dropped earlier this year. He's an Americana singer songwriter that works out of a solar studio!?! Which we want to hear more about for sure. Catch more music from JB on the Brisbane edition of Spotlight On The City.
Jordan Merrick - Jordan is also featured on the Brisbane episode of Spotlight On The City and will probably find a home here on the Alt-Country Show as well. We are loving his sound and will be scouting for any new material.
Julia Jacklin - Last year's most played artist of the year at BTR! You can pre-order a special, limited edition vinyl from her album 'Crushing' on the Polyvinyl site right now!

"Beyond excited to feature tracks from Dougie Poole, Pearl Charles, Josiah Johnson (formerly of The Head and the Heart) and more incredible new tunes on the show today.
The mix starts (and ends) with Dougie Poole and music from his album, Freelancer's Blues which was released in June on Wharf Cat Records.
Head over to Dougie's bandcamp and grab this album up because it's definitely in my top five for the year. The track "Los Angeles" which starts off the show is damn near perfect and the video that accompanies (created by Allison Grosso) is quite possibly the highlight of 2020.
Next up on the show, the first single from Pearl Charles' forthcoming album, Magic Mirror. The album drops on Kanine Records on January 21, 2021. It's nice to see that there is an end to 2020 and we'll be off to a seemingly wonderful start with the release of this record.
OTHER EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:
Josiah Johnson (The Head and The Heart) has dropped his debut solo effort, Every Feeling On A Loop. It's out now on ANTI- and you'll hear the track "Nobody Knows."
Great Peacock are in the mix with a track from their album Forever Worse Better which drops in just a couple weeks on October 9th. Get your pre-order in now!
Alison Langerak & Wyatt Tuzo are also in the mix with their track "Crossing Nebraska" which is part of 'The Subtle Incline: A Collaborative Songwriting Experiment' organized by Stereoactive Media. Each artist in the collab was given the same set of lyrics and then created a song around it. The album is available on the Stereoactive Media bandcamp and "100% of proceeds from this release will support The Beat Shop, a music production program at Workshop Houston, which serves youths in and around Houston’s Third Ward neighborhood."

"You may know her as Brandi Carlile's cellist but it's time to know her as Sam Rae. Today we premiere her new single "Colors of the Highway" from her forthcoming solo album, Ten Thousand Years.
