Whenever you declutter, you are internally weighing up the balance between comfort and inconvenience. Every item has both comfort and inconvenience to consider when you think about whether to keep or go. If you keep it, you have the comfort of having it available in the future, but the inconvenience of having to store, maintain and have the item take up the space. There are so many things to think about that this has become a 2 part series!Living a life free from clutter brings a level of comfort because the positive impacts are you have a more welcoming home, you save money and you save time too. But it does come at the cost of inconvenience of not having instant gratification of having something the minute you desire it. At every step, you have a choice to make, and you need to consider the cost and responsibility of each decision. You may also like to listen to these episodes:Item or Space?Bigger Living, Smaller SpaceReplace vs AccumulateJoin our communityBecome a Patron – your monthly donation makes a huge difference to me being able to produce this podcast. If you get stuck on the idea of if something sparks joy or not... here is a new test you can use to decide if you want to declutter something or keep it. It's the poop test. Ask this question when trying to decide if something should be decluttered or kept... "if it was covered in poop, would you clean it off or throw the item away?"If you picked up your running shoes and they were covered in poop, would you clean them, scrape off the poo, take the laces out, soak the shoes and then wash and dry them. Would you do that? Or would you just throw them in the rubbish? The fundamental idea is that if you create a framework for decision making, it will make it easier for you to make decisions. And the framework needs to fit your values. If you're someone who wants to be surrounded by items that bring you incredible joy, use the spark joy frameworkIf you're more of a practical person, use the need it, use it, love it frameworkIf you're someone who needs to visualise poo on an item to decide if it's worth cleaning to keep... them use that framework!!I'd love to ask you to leave a 5 star Google review today - it takes less than 2 minutes and it will make a huge impact on others confidence to listen/ engage/ join with our community and services around the world.
