Many thanks to Yoshihiro Katsuura, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in San Francisco. Yoshi is also the author and illustrator of the new patient education book, "The Spine Encyclopedia: Everything You've Wanted to Know about Back and Neck Pain But Were Afraid to Ask."  Yoshi describes himself as a "reluctant surgeon." Before recommending a surgical procedure, Dr. Katsuura closely examines each patient's story, exam findings, and imaging to determine whether or not they will benefit from surgery. To help educate his patients, Yoshi wrote a series of pamphlets about specific spine problems. Eventually, these turned into "The Spine Encyclopedia." A hefty tome, it's not meant to be read cover to cover but rather as a reference for patients who may suffer from neck or back pain and are considering a surgical solution. During our 30-minute discussion, Yoshi also offered some invaluable advice on work/life balance and how to avoid burnout. To arrange a consultation with Dr. Katsuura, visit his website: https://www.katsuuramd.com/ You can find Yoshi's book on Amazon.  Thanks for listening!  https://www.patreon.com/andrewwilner If you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues. He's worked as a coach for more than 40 years and loves it. Joe's 80 years young and still going strong. He works out 2 hours/day just about every day of the week and is in the middle of writing another exercise training book. During our 30-minute discussion, we talked about exercise. Many thanks to Jennifer Lycette, MD, a rural oncologist in the Pacific Northwest and author of two nonfiction feminist medical thrillers, “The Algorithm Will See You Now” and “The Committee Will Kill You Now.” I’ve just finished reading “The Algorithm Will See You Now.” Written with a physician’s expertise and through a women’s eye, it’s definitely a page turner. I can’t wait to read “The Committee Will Kill You Now,” which is actually a prequel.During our 30-minute discussion, Dr. Lycette shared how a severe episode of burnout pre-pandemic led her to temporarily leave medicine. Many thanks to Christina Gomez, MD, a gastrointestinal oncologist at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Phoenix, AZ, and author of the new book "Stopped in My Tracks."  Dr. Gomez attended medical school, residency, and fellowship at the University of Miami. During her fellowship year, she found herself scribbling pertinent and poignant quotes from her discussions with cancer patients in the exam room. She continued this habit for 15 years and recently published this unique collection in a book, "Stopped in My Tracks." Dr. Gomez and I had a deep conversation about the intimate nature of the patient-physician relationship, advances in cancer treatment, the art of listening carefully to patients, and helping people live with cancer if a cure is not forthcoming.  Dr. Gomez's passion for patient care illuminates this 30-minute interview. She was a joy to speak with, and I'm sure you will enjoy her book, "Stopped in My Tracks." You can contact Dr. Gomez here: https://christinagomezmd.com   If you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues. Thanks for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner." My special guest today is Bill Martin, CFA, Chief Wealth Officer at Earned Wealth. During this 30-minute program, we discuss the unique and sometimes challenging financial situation of physicians. For example, although doctors may be relatively high earners, because of lengthy postgraduate training programs that can last up to 7 years after medical school, doctors may not start earning high salaries until much later than their nonphysician peers. In addition, they are often saddled with enormous college and medical school debt.  Bill explains his approach to helping physicians optimize their investments and savings to ultimately achieve “financial wellness.” He contrasts wealth managers who operate as “fiduciaries” versus “brokers.” He also defines the designations “CFP” and “CFA.” Bill is the author of “The Smart Financial Advisor,” which offers tips to his colleagues about employing financial technology and goals-based investing. Bill explained that Earned Wealth offers several tiers of service. The first one is a free financial planning app, available at your app store. On Apple, it’s easy to find with a large green “E” at “Earned.” The next tier is an in-depth financial overview available for a one-time fee. If applicable, Earned Wealth offers a number of ongoing financial services for physicians who choose to become regular clients. I think you’ll enjoy listening to Bill explain a little bit about financial services and how they may apply to your situation. You can contact Bill through Earned Wealth:http://www.earnedwealth.comFor our listeners, Earned Wealth is offering $500 towards your Wealth Diagnostic with code ArtOfMed. The Wealth Diagnostic is a deep check-up on your finances, billed on a flat fee. Many thanks to Bradley B. Block, MD, for speaking with me today on “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.” Dr. Block is an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist in Garden City, New York.  Recently, Brad was kind enough to interview me on his podcast, “Physician’s Guide to Doctoring.” We talked about one of my favorite topics, locum tenens and my book, “The Locum Life: A Physician’s Guide to Locum Tenens.” Today, Dr. Block shares his tips for avoiding burnout in private practice.  For example, Dr. Block greets patients and the people they bring with them, looking long and hard enough “to notice their eye color.” I was impressed to learn that his medical group has a “patient experience” committee, which demonstrates their commitment to improving the patient/doctor experience. Further, his group is owned and run by physicians who easily understand and prioritize their colleagues’ values. Please tune in to our 30-minute discussion to learn more ways to run a compassionate and efficient private practice. As a bonus, we also chat about my ENT experience and the cool reassuring diagnosis I got of “presbylarnyx”-oh no! You can learn more about Dr. Block here: https://www.entandallergy.com/doctor/bradley-block-md Here’s a link to his podcast: Physician’s Guide to DoctoringThanks for joining us!If you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues.  We spend a lot of time on this podcast discussing the business of medicine, which is terribly important. In the most recent episode (#98), for example, I discussed NALTO, the National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations with Tanika Williams and Olivia D'Angelo. However, just as important is the art of medicine. That's why I'm delighted that Dr. Richard Berlin has joined the show today. Dr. Berlin is a published poet who just retired from clinical medicine. Dr. Berlin has been passionate about poetry since childhood and is still in touch with his 10th-grade teacher who taught poetry. Several singer-songwriters of the '60s, like Bob Dylan, were also inspirations. But it wasn't until mid-life that he became a serious writer. Although there was never enough time to write when he worked full-time, he tried to "read a lot and write a lot." Dr. Berlin sees many parallels between writing poetry and the practice of medicine. During our 35-minute interview, we discussed an author we both admire, Richard Selzer, MD. Dr. Selzer was one of the first contemporary physician-authors in the US. As a successful physician/writer, he became a role model for me and Dr. Berlin. Dr. Berlin started our program by reading a poem he wrote while staying in a cabin on Monhegan Island in Maine. To learn how a lobsterman's trained eye resembles a physician's, please listen to our program! "How JFK Killed My Father" is Dr. Berlin's first book of poetry, available on Amazon:https://amzn.to/3R2vOpe. He has several other books and more books on the way. Dr. Berlin has also published poetry at Psychiatric Times for the last 25 years:https://www.psychiatrictimes.com/view/25-years-of-poetry-of-the-timesDr. Berlin can be reached at his website: HTTP://www.richardmberlin.comIf you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues.  Many thanks to Tanika Williams and Olivia D’Angelo for speaking with me today on “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.” Both Tanika and Olivia work for Jackson and Coker, a major staffing agency for physicians and advanced care providers who work locum tenens. As many of you know, I’ve been doing locums off and on since 1982. I even wrote a book about it, “The Locum Life: A Physician’s Guide to Locum Tenens.”Tanika and Olivia volunteer at NALTO, the National Association of Locums Tenens Organizations. Tanika works on the NALTO legislative and conference committee. She just returned from lobbying in Washington, D.C. where she educated lawmakers about locum tenens and advocated for the Healthcare Provider Shortage Minimization Act. She’ll tell us all about that in this episode! Welcome to The Art of Medicine, the program that explores the arts, business, and clinical aspects of the practice of medicine. I’m your host, Dr. Andrew Wilner.  Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Jon Appino, Principal and Founder of Contract Diagnostics. Jon’s been running Contract Diagnostics for more than 10 years, helping physicians analyze and negotiate their contracts with respect to salary, benefits, and covenants.  Jon grew up in a medical family. In college, he was a biology and biochemistry major and pre-med. Ultimately, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to pursue medically-related business opportunities rather than attending medical school.  In this episode, we discuss Jon’s motivation and approach to helping physicians achieve the most favorable business contracts. He has had experience with literally thousands of physician contracts. During our discussion, Jon addresses critical features of both locum tenens and permanent contracts. It’s been my experience that when push comes to shove at the workplace, it’s what written in the contract that really matters.  Please watch our 40-minute discussion to hear how John can help determine whether your contract is fair or could be improved. Jon insists that every physician has a “story,” and each contract must be individualized. Jon is a big fan of “The Art of Medicine,” which I really appreciate! You can learn more about Jon Appino here: https://contractdiagnostics.comOr Call: 888.574.5526 Thanks for watching! If you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues. It's a pleasure to welcome Gail Gazelle, MD, to The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner. Dr. Gazelle is the author of the new book, “Mindful MD: 6 ways mindfulness restores your autonomy and cures healthcare burnout.” We discussed the incredibly prevalent problem of physician burnout, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. Dr. Gazelle observed that physicians are a set-up for burnout. During training, “comparisons, ratings, and rankings” focus on our shortcomings, not our strengths. Dr. Gazelle experienced her own burnout and eventually developed effective strategies to combat it. One solution was to change the way she interacted with her life circumstances. She discovered that mindfulness,” the ability to train our minds to focus,” can be enormously helpful to overcome the “negativity basis” of the human brain. Over the last 12 years, she has coached over 500 physicians and physician leaders to help them improve their lives. Please watch our 30-minute discussion. You can find her book on Amazon and in my library. You can learn more about Gail Gazelle, MD here: https://gailgazelle.com Thanks for watching! If you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues. It's a pleasure to welcome Rachel Zemach to The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.Rachel is the author of the new book, “The Butterfly Cage, joy, heartache, and corruption: Teaching while Deaf in a California public school.” Rachel was born hearing impaired in one ear but learned to speak. However, at age 10 she had an accident that suddenly rendered her deaf. She wore a hearing aid, learned sign language, and has become an advocate for the Deaf community.  Rachel has come to know the Deaf community and is a strong advocate for American Sign Language. She has reservations about the value of cochlear implants for children. In her experience, American Sign Language is a more powerful communication method than spoken words for a deaf child. I was able to interview Rachel via Zoom as she was able to follow the closed captions of my questions! We also discuss whether there is still a stigma to being deaf. Please watch our 30-minute discussion. For those who can’t hear, closed captions are available. You can find "The Butterfly Cage" on Amazon and in my library. You can learn more about Rachel Zemach here: https://www.rachelzemach.com/ Thanks for listening!  If you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues.
