According to Julia Sherman, cooking is a lot like painting: “ It’s a composition, it’s layering of materials… it works best when there’s contrasting flavors and textures and colors.” The author and chef is bringing this philosophy to her latest venture as executive chef of the new restaurant at New York’s New Museum, opening this fall. On this episode of The Artsy Podcast, Sherman joins Artsy’s managing editor Olivia Horn for a conversation about how artists eat, why art institutions ...

This spring, a wave of AI-generated imagery in the style of Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli flooded social media. The trend renewed debate about how AI affects the way we make and experience art. In 1971, Linda Nochlin’s groundbreaking essay “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” posed a provocative question about the role of gender in art history. Today, we know that there have been great women artists across time and cultures—but, too often, their greatness isn’t recognized by the art market. Art historian Katy Hessel visits The Artsy Podcast for a special Women’s History Month episode to discuss the importance of talking about women’s representation in the art world, the pro...
On this episode, we take stock of the state of the art market. May was a frenzied month for the industry, with the Rockefeller and New York auctions providing key litmus tests about the health of the market. There were some objectively massive sales, including works by Picasso and Modigliani. But with big ticket works selling, why didn’t the action on the salesroom floor feel exciting? And what does that tell us about the role that expectations play when it comes to the art market? We also ge...

Finally! A good podcast about art. I've been searching one like this for a while now, one that talks about the more recent happenings. Most art podcasts just talk about nonsense. And the ones that do put out good storys require your full attention, forgetting that a podcast is often enjoyed while on-the-go. The artsy podcast is light yet professional, with relevant content and presented by young individuals who can talk in an engaging manner.
