Me and my brother Mike have always been interested in space, and while on vacation in Arizona we found time to sit down and watch for some stars! We did some research on stars (maybe the wrong stars) and had a good time seeing the whole universe above our heads.
Pop music is a difficult topic to approach if you're a music snob like I am. Every time I listen to a new pop album I have to convince myself that it's worth my time and that I'm not doing something awful. Taylor Swift broke down that wall faster than any pop star I've ever tried to listen to and I'm so happy that she did. 1989, her latest album, is a perfect pop album that not only distances herself from her previous country persona but also gets the form of the "POP ALBUM" absolutely right on every level. Your assignment this week was to listen to this perfect album, and me and Arne Parott sit down to discuss it. Next week, your assignment is to go somewhere that you can see constellations and find a summer constellation. I know that I'm going to be looking for Pegasus. That is due in a week!
Welcome back! It's been a month, and week 34 brings us Zach and Nils chatting about our sketchbooks and drawings we did on our lunches
We all have our favorite albums, but there are some that stick with you forever, and some that change how you view and interact with the world. This week on The Assignment Notebook, three guests discuss the album that changed their lives.
I have a list of podcast ideas. This list is about 70 items long and consists of things that I would like to try out and, for the most part, haven't and probably don't have the guts to do. This episode is exemplary of the content of this list. I was terrified about writing a rap but I wanted to do it, and I did it with a little help from my guest, Jordan Moore, who's debut EP LIFESEED just came out on soundcloud.
I've been running for a while, so I know how much I like it, and I know I'm pretty good at it. I also know that a lot of people won't start running because it sort of sucks to start from nothing. This week, we discuss accomplishing our goals, the motivation to get out and run, and the satisfaction that we gain from it. I hope that everyone tried to get to a mile this week, and if not, I hope you made your goal
Mad Max, released on May 15, 2015, was a movie years and years in the making. The movie brings us back to the post-apocalyptic world we left in 1985 with Beyond Thunderdome, bringing back the original writer/director, and using a huge amount of practical stunts and effects. Blaire from TVbinges.com twitter.com/blairelovestv and zach discuss the story, the themes, and most importantly, the feminist angle.
Gregory Burosh and Zach sat down in October of 2014 to discuss Yelle's latest album. Zach didn't even know if he wanted to do a podcast at this point! Listen to him awkwardly introduce the show and feel the format out
One of my first episodes was this tetris game, but I wanted to get an expert opinion on it. I found that in Alex Kerr from The Tetris Concept forums. We talk why TGM is the best tetris game of all time and what is next for the series. Follow him at twitter.com/tetrisconcept or twitter.com/kitaruTC. Follow the show on twitter.com/dueinaweek and facebook.com/dueinaweek, and don't forget to subscribe and leave a review on itunes!
It's getting to be that time of the year where Chicagoans don their blackhawks garb in order to show their support for their one really good sports team. I've never watched hockey, so this week Carl Landra from The 4th Line Podcast (twitter.com/the4thlinepod) joins me to help me understand exactly what I'm looking at!
Andres told me a story before we even first me. He told me that when he was a kid, he was in a bowling league where he never felt like he was as good as he could be. Cut to twenty years later, and andres is learning the techniques he never knew when he was a kid to increase his bowling score!
This week, your assignment was to participate in a board game night! Zach's board game night was at Chicagoland Game's Dice Dojo in the Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago. This episode is a departure in format for The Assignment Notebook, but I hope you had fun playing board games with humans. Follow The Dice Dojo on facebook and twitter, twitter.com/dicedojo. Subscribe on iTunes so that every week, you'll get a new episode automatically!
My brother Mike Weiss is on the podcast again! This time, we're talking about close listening, the practice of listening to specific parts of our favorite songs, in order to get a better understanding of why we like them as much as we do! The idea comes down to the question, "how well do you actually know your favorite songs?" In this episode we discuss paying attention to only the bass drum or the vocals in order to figure out new things that we never noticed about our favorite songs. Follow the show on Twitter at twitter.com/dueinaweek, at facebook.com/dueinaweek, and instagram, @dueinaweek! Follow Mike Weiss at twitter.com/mweissmusic! Next week, your assignment is to participate in a board game night! I attended Chicago's Dice Dojo Wednsday open board game night at 5550 n. Broadway in Chicago and you can find them on twitter.com/dicedojo
The final draft of our essays were due today! We talk about what we find acceptable for publishing. Check out Jacks essay here http://themegaphoneblog.com/2015/04/03/trevor-noah-lena-dunham-and-the-rebirth-of-casual-antisemitism/ . Don't forget to subscribe to the show on itunes so that you can get the assignment every week when it's released!
The plan was set to have a two part episode this week, when we had a guest bail on us! Everything turned out okay, though, when Clay Pilkenton stepped in to talk about essays that he's done and to give Zach a little feedback
Both Zach and his guest Erico Ramirez are Starbucks employees in their real lives and on the show we prepare a french press and a pour over coffee, using Guatemala Antigua coffee. We discuss flavor profiles and the benefits of each brewing method! The podcast for next week it a little bit up in the air at the moment, but it should be sorted out by next week, so keep following our twitter and facebook pages, twitter.com/dueinaweek and facebook.com/dueinaweek for updates!
After tossing around a few ideas for this episode, Zach's friend from college, Peaches, aka Andrew Begue, drops by the podcast to learn how to cook! This week we took to Google or Epicurious in order to find a recipe that we've never cooked before, which in Peaches case was almost any recipe! We talk about the difficulty of following recipes and ingredients lists, and about the subscription service, Blue Apron, although this podcast is not sponsored by Blue Apron at all. Next week your assignment is to prepare coffee using the french press and pour over methods! Don't forget to follow us on twitter.com/dueinaweek, facebook.com/dueinaweek, and Instagram, @dueinaweek! Subscribe on iTunes and get every episode delivered to you every week!
Zach sits down with second time guest, Jewell Lay, to talk about two favorite episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation. The episodes are The Inner Light, which widely regarded as the best episode of TNG. The second episode is Starship Mine, which is literally Die Hard in outer space. Next week, your assignment is to learn to cook! Pick a recipe, and prepare it, and that is due in a week!
I've had this idea for an assignment for a while, but a random conversation with Greg is what made me want to do this episode, after hearing his Jewel story. We have a good time talking about songs we either used to like, and just the weirdness of 90's pop
I want to get the word out about professional wrestling. It's a genre of entertainment that I've been into since about 2009, and I'm glad that I got into it when I did. CM Punk helped me take it seriously as a genre, so I'm glad to share this match with you, and with my guest Gannon Reedy, of the Runaways Lab Theater (http://runawayslab.org/) who is doing a production of Faust in random Chicago apartments! Check it out on their website or on their facebook (facebook.com/runawayslab). Next week your assignment is to revisit songs or bands that, upon reflection, were actually really bad and you're embarassed to have liked, and that is due in a week!
