Political solutions feel increasingly out of reach in the United States. Congress cannot pass a budget and has offloaded most of its legislative duties to lobbyists and the permanent bureaucracy. The judiciary spends more time blocking lawful presidential action than interpreting law. Executive agencies drag their feet under activist judges and rebellious career staff. Inflation continues to punish households, the health care system teeters, and American workers watch themselves being replaced by imported labor. In moments like these, people look for someone who can simply make the system function again. That is how you get a Caesar. In a recent interview, President Trump defended his earlier claim that bringing 600,000 Chinese college students into the United States would be good for the country. When the interviewer questioned how that aligned with an America First agenda, Trump replied that without those students, “Half the colleges in America would go out of business.” To most Trump supporters, that sounds like a win-win — fewer foreign students and fewer left-wing universities to subsidize. But Trump seemed to view the issue as a business transaction: Closing locations is bad, losing revenue is bad, and the substance of those “economic units” doesn’t really matter. His comments revealed a deeper confusion about what America First really means. Democrats won several important elections yesterday, including Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City and Jay Jones as attorney general of Virginia. The win by Jones is especially disturbing given his propensity for wishing death on his political opponents and their children. The horrific assassination of Charlie Kirk should have brought the people of the United States together; instead it tore them apart. Conservatives quickly realized that far too many of their countrymen on the Left were enthusiastically celebrating the murder, and even those who managed a weak denunciation of the act heavily implied that Kirk ultimately got what he deserved. For a moment, the realization that the average leftist was OK with the murder of Republicans galvanized the right wing as conservatives unified to praise Kirk and call for justice. Unfortunately, that unity quickly dissipated as it became clear that a battle for the Turning Point USA founder’s legacy was under way. This is the worst possible outcome, not just because it turns Kirk’s death into a political football, but because it is destroying the movement he worked so tirelessly to build. On MSNBC this week, host Joe Scarborough gave a familiar speech about the dangers of Donald Trump wielding government power against his political opponents. With figures like Letitia James, James Comey, and John Bolton finally facing charges, the Left has quickly rediscovered its love for judicial restraint. Scarborough delivered his tirade with nods of approval from other journalists, and he warned that Trump and his administration officials would face a similar set of politically motivated prosecutions once they are out of power — the obvious problem being that the Democrats already brought those charges against Trump and his staff.
