Rhonda Valentine Dixon

Rhonda Valentine Dixon

2021-07-1249:02

Rhonda completed a Diploma of Family History through the University of Tasmania in 2018. Researching family history has become a passion, and she delights in helping others uncover the stories of their ancestors. Rhonda achieved a BA (Hons) from Griffith University in 2009. Her thesis, The Transformative Effects of the Steam Locomotive in English Literature, combines her passions, literature and steam engines. Documenting life in New Zealand’s railway settlements frequently features in her short story writing. The Gold Coast Writers’ Association launched a compilation book in October 2020 in which one of these tales appears. She has co-written two books, one advising parents how to help their autistic children and the second to assist children with Autism Spectrum Disorders to communicate more effectively. Her co-writer on ASD and Rhonda has almost completed a third book. This will assist teens with ASD. Great-Grandma Elské’s Bamboo Cane was published by Ocean Reeve Publishing in 2017. This is a children’s picture book which documents an incident that occurred when a local lady lost her Tai Chi cane. While embracing principles in Australia’s Early Years Learning Framework and New Zealand’s Te Whariki, Early Childhood Education Curriculum the book demonstrates the value in an elderly person while highlighting the joyous traditions that occur within caring families. It was a joy to write. In 2018 Rhonda participated in an author expo which culminated in the writing of the compilation book Get Known Be Seen – How to Write Your Book and Leverage It. Each author’s story appears as a chapter. This lead to writing reviews for The Disruptive Author, the magazine produced by the publisher of the compilation book.  In 2019 Rhonda wrote articles for two local publications, Sandgate Guide and Redcliffe Guide. In addition to the book for autistic teens, current projects include a second children’s picture book and a biography documenting the childhood of two Australian women; sisters, now in the seventies. Rhonda is currently writing articles on NDIS and ASD for the Plan Management arm of aVers Cloud Solutions --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/support

Sally Eberhardt

2021-06-2144:49

Sally is a big believer in the power of networking and building strong relationships. Oh … and she also love wild places, animals, photography, family, street art, travel, reading, writing and dining out. Her aim is to enlighten, educate and entertain – and not always in that order. As a copy writer, she can craft words that convey just THE RIGHT MESSAGE whether that be on your website, blog, LinkedIn bio, Speaker or Author Kit … anywhere. As a speaker, her focus is on giving GREAT VALUE to the audience.  As a mentor, she loves helping writers overcome their blocks, structure their book, and GET IT WRITTEN. As an author, she wrote a book … On meeting me, many people assume that I’m an extravert as I appear so at ease in groups of people. I am however, proudly and happily an introvert and acknowledge that it is some of my introvert traits that are my most valuable assets in making real and meaningful connections with people. And while people now comment on how confident I seem in meeting new people and initiating conversations – I assure you – it hasn’t always been this way! My first networking experiences were nerve-racking to say the least. I remember the fears I had – Worries about whether anyone would talk to me (and the humiliation I would feel if that happened) Concern that I wouldn’t fit in (and the last thing I wanted to do was feel left out) Lack of confidence So I worked out strategies – easy things I could do to reduce and eventually REMOVE all the PAIN of networking and MAXIMISE the REWARDS. I want to share them with you so you don’t have to go through the same struggles that I did. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/support

Tom Stodulka

Tom Stodulka

2021-05-3150:50

Tom was born in Bathurst, NSW in 1951, in one of Australia’s post WW11 refugee camps, a huge improvement on the UN Displaced Person’s Camp in Naples where his brother Andrea was born. After some intense cross border encounters in Germany, Switzerland and Holland, his parents Zdeny and Philomena had fled Czechoslovakia in 1947 and were ordered to travel by train to Naples, where life was no picnic to say the least. Tom Stodulka | Author | Poet | Australia (tomstodulkaauthor.com) Tom’s early formative years were spent in Parramatta and after being educated at the King’s School and North Sydney Boys’ High he studied law at Sydney University, where he won an Australia-Britain Society scholarship, which took him on an overseas study tour. In 1976 he joined the Royal Australian Navy as a naval legal officer and served in most Australian States and in the United States during the 1990-91 Gulf War, after a short stint in Pakistan and the Khyber Pass. After 20 years in the Australian Military he established a full-time career as a mediator and facilitator, practising throughout Australia, including the Northern Territory, where he was the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, before settling in Brisbane in 2002. An early pioneer of mediation and alternative dispute resolution and mentored by the late Sir Laurence Street, he has promoted its benefits both here in Australia and overseas. Tom is accredited internationally in India, PNG, Hong Kong and NZ and has promoted mediation across Vietnam in recent years. In 2019 he was honored to receive the Australasian Mediator of the Year award. Tom Stodulka | Author | Poet | Australia (tomstodulkaauthor.com) Tom has been fortunate to have enormous support from his parents and his loving wife Janet and three children. This along with the great support from many friends and colleagues across the country has played a major role in shaping him every step of the way. Growing up in a refugee household, where English was a second language to German, had its challenges and benefits. Assimilation was the order of the day and resilience and unimaginable strength and sacrifice shown by his parents and his grandmother created a unique background and environment. At prep school he struggled with his English essays and often his mother stepped in to help, despite her own challenges learning a new language. Being a contemporary of the author John Marsden helped to inspire Tom years later, to try his hand at writing. Tom Stodulka | Author | Poet | Australia (tomstodulkaauthor.com) Tom was always a happy child, able to keep up a positive disposition, despite the many home pressures and stresses of day to day life. His father was a successful Sydney artist and Tom played a major role in the management and promotion of the cottage industry which contributed to helping pay the prohibitive school fees. The early exposure to the arts and artistic endeavour provided a strong and enduring legacy. Finally, in 1976 whilst at sea in the Pacific Ocean with the Navy he wrote his first poem and found a way to express his own artistic creativity. Life is a Dance is his second book of poems and incorporates his first book Storm Clouds and Silver Linings-My Journey which was launched in 2018 and had its third re-print, due to its success. Kelly Maree

Kelly Maree

2021-05-1747:17

Kelly Maree settled back in Brisbane, Australia with her husband after 10 years travelling around the world, working as a diving instructor and photographer. Life was turned upside down when the couple’s twin ‘surprises’ were born prematurely at 24 weeks on Christmas eve of 2015. Unfortunately little Oli passed on New Year’s Day 2016. All the books are dedicated to the loving memory of Oli and all the little angels that didn’t make it, and a percentage of the books sales donated to the RBWH and Precious Wings Foundations to help support bereaved families and premature babies, making this project extremely personal for Kelly. Kelly threw herself into her removals business and settled on being a mother and business owner, pushing her writing and photography career into the background. With her ever growing love for her little boy, Kelly decided to create a legacy for Oskar and Oli, and Oskar’s Adventures was born. Her passion for writing and creating poetic adventures for children to enjoy is apparent from the first few pages of any of her three books. She would love to see her books in every child’s collection in Australia and the adventure series to reach every corner of the globe. The first three books of Oskar’s Adventures are Oskar and the Bear, Oskar and the Moon Rocks and Oskar and the Storm. Kelly Maree is working on the next books in the series, aiming for around 20 books to complete the set. Sloane Kelly certainly would. Then again, she’s been left with no other choice. A month ago, Sloane had a perfect life; promotion to Boston’s Chief Medical Examiner and a fiancé on the fast-track to the White House. Until she was unjustly connected to a murder in her family’s past and it tore her world apart. But … she has a solution––use her friend’s scientific prototype time machine to travel back to 1887, inhabit the body of her ancestor, and prevent the murder from occurring. Such a simple plan, what could go wrong? For a start, the machine malfunctions, and once again she stands accused of murder. Now, Sloane must survive in 1887 and use her modern-day forensic skills to take CSI back to basics and unmask the real murderer. Teaming up with Luther McLaren, an ostracized and enigmatic detective with secrets of his own, Sloane must sift through the haze of clues to discover the truth. Karyn Webber

Karyn Webber

2021-03-1501:01:09

TRIGGER WARNING! Some content of this podcast could trigger the listener if they have been sexually abused. Karyn Webber is an Ipswich-based author and hairdresser. Ignited by the energy of others, Karyn loves engaging with those around her and empathising with their lives and stories. When she feels someone second-guessing themselves and getting lost among the many, Karyn’s the one to hold their hand and help them show themselves—their true selves. It’s this empathy that drives Karyn as an author, a guide, an advocate, and a ‘big sister’. Karyn has always aspired to take the role of ‘big sister’ to help and guide people, inspired by her own siblings. Through knowing herself, Karyn can see the full picture of the good, the bad, and the ugly in life. She can accept people as their whole selves, believing that to be one of the most empowering part of any relationship—to have total acceptance. In return, Karyn feels the most exciting thing is what her ‘little sisters’ can teach her. Through their fresh eyes, they give Karyn a new perspective and way of thinking that keeps her fresh, feeling younger, and challenging her to keep growing. Equally, her ‘big sisters’ teach her to open her eyes, be grounded. They give her inspiration, direction, and taught Karyn how to be a good ‘big sister’ too. It’s the lessons that go both ways to improve the lives of all that make life good. Her book, Dangerous Animals in the Home, is the true story of a woman who, on the surface, has it all: a successful business, popularity, loving family and friends. But beneath the surface, there is much, much, more. Delivering a raw, real, and insightful portrayal of abuse in the family, Karyn outlines how the actions of one paedophile can affect every aspect of the victim’s life, and the lives of those closest. Laying her heart on her sleeve, Karyn shares the details of failed relationships, self-destructive behaviours, and, despite the underlying trauma, some funny times along the way, which is a testament to resilience and the power of positive relationships! This story—ground-breaking in its honesty—aims to dissolve the taboo surrounding the subject of paedophilia, and allow other victims to start a conversation. The antics will have you laughing and crying, but most of all they will make you stop and rethink the subject of abuse in the home. Strong messages throughout will speak to those who have been wronged by any abuse and provide valuable insight into how to recognise the signs of a dangerous animal in your home. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/support

Joileen Mischel

Joileen Mischel

2021-01-3141:55

Joileen Mischel was born in Murwillumbah in New South Wales, Australia and had a life full of diverse experiences. After an inauspicious and abusive early life, she managed to forge a 30-year hairdressing career, married and had three children, and is now the proud grandmother of six delightful grandchildren. Joileen’s attributes her resilience and strong desire to fulfil her long held aspirations, as fundamental in enabling her to endure and overcome her early life of abuse and shattered dreams. Her father was an unskilled labourer hence he moved his family from place to place in search for work. Her early years were spent living a nomadic lifestyle and as a consequence, developed no attachments or friendships during her formative years. After attending twenty odd schools, she was forced to leave school at age 12 years to begin her working life. Joileen credits her love of books and stories with helping her through the many days of quiet desperation she was forced to endure over the first 19 years of her life. Joileen fashioned dreams in her mind and formed ambitions for the future which she carried like jewels throughout her life. She often felt an alien in her abusive environment, with a deep sense of not measuring up because of her lack of education. Her belief that she did not belong was ever present. Feeling unloved, and without a voice for much of her early life Joileen kept the mental images of becoming somebody worthwhile alive in her long-held dreams. Published by Ocean Reeve Publishing, Broken Past Heals Dreams is an inspirational story of how she was able to transcend feelings of abandonment and betrayal over so many years to eventually become the person she believes she was meant to be. Joileen writes with unbridled honestly about the flawed individual she believed herself to be – revealing her struggle with self-doubt and low self-esteem. She describes how she transitioned from a life of abuse and despair to a place of self-acceptance and self-realisation. We witness how early self-preservation strategies such as reading helped her through the hardest times.  Then how later she sought, unsuccessfully, the answers through religion. Joileen eventually developing a spiritual mindset which enabled her to finally understand her place in the scheme of life and to realise the fulfillment of those long held dreams. Joileen says, “After a period of ill health where I had time to reflect on many of my life experiences I decided to write about them; to demonstrate how it is possible to overcome the struggles and challenges many of us face.” Her story is in some ways a story of self-creation, of finding a way out of self-doubt to arrive at a place where she feels she no longer has a need to prove her worth. She knows her life journey, with its many twists and turns, has led her to where she is meant to be. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/support

Stacy Nottle grew up on a station in western Queensland where, from an early age, she began paying attention to her arid landscape where the changing seasons mean so much more than a change of clothing. At age six, she went away to boarding school ‘in town’, and later ‘in the city’, where she discovered the world of people—complex, confusing, intriguing, surprising people—and she began paying attention to what they did and how they interacted. She studied science at university and has worked as a shearers’ cook, waitress, scientific research assistant, high school mathematics and science teacher; and careers counsellor in an all-boys’ boarding school. For thirty years, Stacy has also participated in the sport of orienteering, as a competitor and a coach. She is a member of the Queensland Writers Centre and is active in the Queensland writing community attending workshops, writers’ groups and festivals which have connected her with mentors and allies that have helped her along the way. A cancer diagnosis in late 2015 gave her the impetus to start doing something with her writing. Her debut novel, After the Flood, was published in 2019 by Black Phoenix Publishing Collective. She is launching her memoir, Breastless, with Ocean Reeve Publishing in February 2021. Stacy is married to Richard, has three grown children—Bridget, Glennie and Jack—plus Snorkel, Envy, Redbird (the horses), Theo (the dog) and Orla (the cat). --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/support
Jason (aka The Flash) is the Publishing Manager at Ocean Reeve Publishing and Managing Director at Clark and Mackay Printers. He works directly with each author managing them through the book publishing process and leads the publishing team Ocean Reeve Publishing. This includes everything from title registration through to book printing. His focus and efficiency often means he has over 60 authors in process at one time, multiple print jobs in the system both here in Australia and overseas – many of which he will personally deliver to the authors so that customer experience remains close throughout the whole process.  Jason also manages the print team at Clark and Mackay Printers and ensures that all print work is flowing seamlessly from client submission, through the production warehouse and into the clients hands.   Another role The Flash has is as a meticulous writer. Due to this, he often takes authors through the Writing Fiction mentoring program. Along with this role as operations manager, he is also the Business Development Manager for the both businesses, where using his millennial mindset, he devises and implements innovative and fresh directions for the company going forward. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/an-author-angle/support
