Almost every person involved in the Christmas story had been in some point of pressure. For Zachariah, it was his job as a priest. For Mary, it was her betrothal. For Joseph, it was cultural expectations. For the wisemen, it was obedience to a king. But we need to look at what they each decided to do when the Lord gave them a word to guide them and give them direction. Was it to continue in confusion? Was it to let their feelings dictate their actions? Or was it to lay those feelings aside and trust and love God enough to take Him at His word? Find yourself in the Christmas story, if you are facing pressure from your job, your marriage, your finances, your health, or something else that is applying pressure. This Christmas season, don’t glaze over the nativity story. When the angel visited the shepherds to tell them of the coming of the Savior, it was a sure-fire word that they could act upon immediately. They lived a mundane, day-to-day cycle of faithfully tending to their sheep, when God’s meticulously planned moment intended for them to experience was sprung upon them all of a sudden. Like a light switch, everything for them changed. Believer, God still speaks. He has a word for you, and it WILL come to pass. If you are struggling in some sort of crisis, KNOW that God has placed unlikely vessels of deliverance often in the very place of your struggle. In a health crisis, God has an ally fighting for your healing. In financial ruin, God has a friend rallying for your relief. In an unlikely situation, God placed Jael behind enemy lines to defeat the commander of the Canaanite army oppressing Israel, ultimately leading to the victory of the nation of Israel. Description: Intimidation is the enemy’s most effective tool.  He knows he doesn't have authority over you, so he tries to manipulate you with fear and intimidation. Oftentimes, it works. Finances are not something almost anyone wants to talk about, but this is a NEEDED conversation for believers. God invites you to TEST HIM with your finances. He wants to bless you, He wants to bless His people! But He cannot blow your mind with His “God-math” if you do not test Him. It is not supposed to make sense how He does it. Spiraling, negative thoughts take up residence in our minds more than they should. King David himself struggled with anxiety and depression, as evident in the Psalms. However, in the Psalms, David does something that we should also be doing: he puts his thoughts against the character and Word of God. What would happen if WE did that? Do you think we could live a less anxious life? Has God ever told you something that you thought, “Maybe I need to seek someone else’s opinion about this?” Maybe he’s told you to get up and move next week, or to give your car away, or don’t take that job promotion, or something else that just sounds crazy to human ears. When you KNOW that God has told you something, DON’T seek another’s opinion! Godly counsel is a good thing, but we cannot put it ABOVE God’s opinion, God’s word to us. Imagine what might have happened if Abraham had asked Sarah’s opinion of taking Isaac to sacrifice him on an altar, because God told him to. Or any of the servants he brought with them. Abraham held to God’s character even when what God told him sounded crazy. We, as believers, in the western church, have forgotten a VITALLY IMPORTANT aspect of our faith. It’s the axle to our bicycle wheel of faith, from which everything holds together. We have forgotten to put God above and before EVERYTHING else. In our decisions, in our feelings, in our children, in our marriages, in our careers, in our ministry, God should be FIRST. You’ve heard the saying, “but first, coffee,” or “but first,” fill in the blank. We need to put God BACK at the top of everything in our lives, even the smallest things. Has God ever given you something that is so hard to wrap your mind around? You’re looking at something God has told you, and you’re saying, “I have no idea how to make sense of this! It’s weird, it feels icky, and I don’t understand it.” You have no idea what to do with it. Jesus told his disciples one of the weirdest things to understand in John 6, which led them to have to decide if they stay with Jesus or withdraw from him. Jesus had already showed them his miracles before he told them something that shocked them. Sometimes deliverance looks like a parting of a Red Sea and you simply walk through. But what about those times when it’s a process? Peter, imprisoned and in need of a supernatural act of God to achieve freedom, was not given an instantaneous deliverance. The angel of the Lord walked him out in small, bite-sized, easy steps. He told Peter to put on his shoes, to gird himself, to put on his cloak, and take one step at a time to the outside. Maybe the deliverance you’re praying for isn’t going to show up in one big miracle, but God will take you through a step-by-step process that leads to your freedom. Jacob, terrified, acted upon what he heard from his messengers instead of what God’s word to him was. When we receive news of situations that we will have to face, it LACKS context. Esau was never meeting with Jacob to kill him, but Jacob could not shake it. God told Jacob that He was protecting him and has already gone before him. When God tells you to face your fears, He has a blessing for you that follows. Jacob received the blessing of his father and his father before him, but not without his brother threatening to kill him in revenge for Jacob’s deceit. God knew that before Jacob could become who he was blessed to be, he had to face his brother. The fear kept him from experiencing all the blessings that he was to have. Sometimes, we as believers can find ourselves cherry-picking verses from the Bible to live by and believe. But what about the verses about anxiety and fear? Be anxious for nothing, don’t worry about tomorrow, do not fear for He will be with you. We know these, but do we live by them as much as we live as saved, sanctified, and set apart? We must face the fear. It’s not a fun challenge, but we must overcome it. Jesus didn’t just send His disciples into a storm, He MADE them get into the boat, TWICE. But what’s even more interesting about Jesus forcing His disciples to face a storm is what Jesus completely blocked His disciples from being threatened by.  God does the same thing with us. Whatever storm we are facing today, whatever scary situation has our in a chokehold, it bears no weight against the authority of the Almighty who has already blocked things from being a threat to you and you don’t even know it. The disciples had no idea that the people wanted to make Jesus king after He fed the five thousand, but Jesus knew it was a threat to His disciples and to His ministry. God used the storm He MADE the disciples face to show them a greater understanding of Who He is. We should not fear whatever “storm” God has led us to, because He has something He wants to show us.    Monologue: Autumn celebrates her older son’s 16th birthday and shares a new special tradition she started for sending off her oldest to college.  Message: Autumn brings a new perspective to the times the disciples were caught in the middle of a storm on the sea. What does the world fear? We might think of divorce, bankruptcy, illness, and other things, and we would find that these are things that we, a believing remnant, might also fear. But what does GOD say? What are His facts? He commands us to “fear not,” but how do we do that when we face traumatic, horrible, hard things? We need to look to God’s Word to reassure ourselves that God is the solution to every problem we could ever face in this world. The world tells us to fear. But we, believers, have the stability of hope that the world does not, because God is right beside us and is the solution.    Monologue: Autumn gives an update on how the back-to-school preparations are going in the Miles household.  Message: Autumn starts a new series inspiring believers to trade the lies of fear for God's truth that can be found in His Word.
