Rev. Wendy and Megan Smith talk about breast health. bOObs: The War on Women’s Breasts investigates the controversy swirling around the breast cancer screening test mammography. Over a 30-year period, mammogram’s use led to over-diagnosing 1.3 million U.S. women, resulting in needless treatments for breast cancers that otherwise may not have spread. Medical experts scientifically debunk the mammography myths of “early detection” and “low radiation,” which are amplified by cancer associations, women’s health groups, and governmental agencies worldwide. Requiring more mammographic scans, large- and dense-breasted women are left uninformed about the increased risk for radiation-induced cancers. MEGAN S. SMITH, M.S. DIRECTOR, PRODUCER, WRITER Megan S. Smith holds an M.S. in biology with a thesis in molecular genetics, and currently works as a documentary filmmaker and freelance investigative journalist in the areas of science and health. In 2016, Smith founded WayMark Productions, LLC, a company dedicated to bettering the lives of those with health afflictions. Prior to that, she worked consecutive decades as a screenwriter, a Capitol Hill lobbyist for renewable energy, and a stage performer/recording artist. Smith was the first to report on the inaccuracy of Lyme disease testing for The Washington Post, and the government’s gross underreporting of this epidemic for her local paper.  Smith wrote, produced, and directed her first short documentary, “bOObs: The War on Women’s Breasts,” which garnered numerous film festival awards. Starting October 2020, Smith’s feature film by the same name will be distributed internationally by Los Angeles-based Cinema Libre Studio.  “bOObs” look into the controversial breast cancer screening test of mammography, but also considers a future protocol option for women: thermography in conjunction with ultrasound.  Her second film, “A New Standard of Care,” will investigate the highly contentious area of non-conventional cancer therapies and will be dedicated to her late husband, Proctor.
