it's interesting that this episode makes the same quick conclusion about selling one's eggs that the movie does, namely, it's a horrible thing that this working class girl is forced to do. Whereas I would see it as a nice way to make some money while helping a family, particularly if you don't plan on having kids. yeah, capitalism overall sucks, but I think we should probably re-examine our assumptions on why we assume a woman utilizing her body in this way is automatically horrible and tragic
Honestly kind of disappointed with this episode. I thought there could have been more of a discussion about class in the film and how it's affected by the insurance industry. The Hispanic truck driver in the film was played by a Spanish actor. They could have looked that up pretty easily, just assuming it was an actor in brown-face seemed very lazy.
I am a huge fan, and as a Mexican immigrant, I'm very happy to see you guys stand with us. As a human being married to a Jewish man, I am deeply heartbroken to hear you guys spread antisemitic libel about jewish people and Israel. 95% of the Jewish people in the world are zionists. From one feminist to another I beg you to do more research on the issue and listen to Jewish voices (not just the 5% that is anti Israel)
They keep saying it's weird how Roxanne never reappears after this movie even though she's so remembered I wish someone told them about House of Mouse the Disney cartoon where she reappears with Max on occasion.
This was a great interview!
Honestly, I was pretty disappointed in this episode. Considering Broey Deschanel is one of Jamie's favorite video essayists, I'm surprised Jamie didn't reflect on Broey's essay about this film and the rich film history of camp and genre fluidity that is intertwined with the film. It seemed like a huge wasted opportunity that was replaced with tedious, sanctimonious pearl clutching about the subject matter.
wth is this movie. I'm glad I listened to this and didn't watch the movie
Amanda Montell in The Bechdel Cast is the greatest crossover.
for the first few minutes, I was mixing up The Apartment with The Room, and was deeply confused
1 hour 37 minutes : Khadija would like "Camp Damascus " by Chuck Tingle
In the early 90s or late 80s, there was an animated series for children called "Cities of Gold." My sister and I watched it religiously. We've never found another living being who remembers it existed. I imagine it probably aged very poorly. If anyone else remembers this show, I'd appreciate confirmation that we didn't just hallucinate it.
on the name Crystal, it is currently treated as a very feminine name but has waxed and waned over time as a name for boys, too. (I'm non binary and I love names that do that). It also has increased recently as a name given to baby boys, which I credit more awareness of binary gender being an illusion
I so loved this ep because I’ve had no one to talk to about this movie, put I particularly love how Cate says ‘het’rosexual’, as it explicitly reminds me of being in a situation where I’m on my best straight behavior because I don’t know how the room feels about queers.
don't do my boy like this. Edward G Robinson never named names to huac. he was brought before the committee and said he wasn't a communist, but he never named names
I don't know if the Maltins were quite the right people to talk to about this one
wow. tough listen. why even do an episode if you don't want to engage with the text?
Prop was the right guest for this episode. I loved it.
My movie I love, but can’t bare to watch again is Melancholia. The overwhelming, increasing dread is so real.
Have you talked about Seperation by Asghar Farhadi? Or The Salesman?
...Alan Cumming
